Book The Christology of Karl Barth and Matta al Miskin

Download or read book The Christology of Karl Barth and Matta al Miskin written by Hani Hanna and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Christology of Karl Barth and Matta al-Miskīn, Hani Hanna argues that two of the most renowned theologians of the twentieth century, Karl Barth and Matta al-Miskīn (Matthew the Poor), redefine the reality of God and humanity christologically in similar ways. Both theologians achieve this redefinition using historical rubrics that are closer to Scripture than the traditional metaphysical categories borrowed from Greek philosophy. Rooted in their respective Reformed and Coptic Orthodox traditions, their works can be placed in a dialogue that takes into account modern concerns about history, revelation, and human agency. By providing an in-depth analysis of both men’s christologies, Hanna also finds that Barth and Matta’s christological view of reality has implications for interfaith and intercultural dialogues today.

Book Karl Barth and the Incarnation

Download or read book Karl Barth and the Incarnation written by Darren O. Sumner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work demonstrates the significance of Karl Barth's Christology by examining it in the context of his orientation toward the classical tradition - an orientation that was both critical and sympathetic. To compare this Christology with the doctrine's history, Sumner suggests first that the Chalcedonian portrait of the incarnation is conceputally vulnerable at a number of points. By recasting the doctrine in actualist terms - the history of Jesus' lived existence as God's fulfillment of His covenant with creatures, rather than a metaphysical uniting of natures - Barth is able to move beyond problems inherent in the tradition. Despite a number of formal and material differences, however, Barth's position coheres with the intent of the ancient councils and ought to be judged as orthodox. Barth's great contribution to Christology is in the unapologetic affirmation of 'the humanity of God'.

Download or read book Church as Moral Community written by Michael D O'Neil and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the development and contours of Karl Barth's robust and lively vision of Christian and ecclesial life in the early years of his career. In this remarkable work Michael O'Neil investigates Karl Barth's theology in the turbulent and dynamic years of his nascent career, between 1915 and 1922. It focuses on the manner in which this great theologian construed Christian and ecclesial existence. The author argues that Karl Barth developed his theology with an explicit ecclesial and ethical motive in a deliberate attempt to shape the ethical life of the church in the troublesome context within which he lived and worked. O'Neil adopts a chronological and exegetical reading of Barth's work from the initial dispute with his liberal heritage (c.1915) until the publication of the second edition of his commentary on romans. Not only does this work contribute to a broader understanding of Barth's theology both in its early development, and with regard to his ecclesiology and ethics, it also provides a significant framework and material for contemporary ecclesial reflection on Christian identity and mission.

The Book is divided into four main sections. The first traces the course of Barth's life, outlines briefly his main writings, and sees how and why Barth has come to believe what he believes and think in the way he does. The second deals with the question of revelation, the third with his natural theology, the fourth with Barth's Christological approach to doctrine.

Book Theology of Karl Barth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hans Urs Von Balthasar
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2013-05-22
  • ISBN : 1681495856
  • Pages : 460 pages

Download or read book Theology of Karl Barth written by Hans Urs Von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1951 (with a second edition in 1961), this book takes its place within an impressive array of attempts to wrestle with Karl Barth's theology from a Catholic point of view. The book adopts the twofold strategy of presenting an exposition of "the whole of Barth's thought," while doing so for the purpose of a confessional dialogue among theologians. Not to be construed as an "Introduction to the Theology of Karl Barth," Balthasar's effort is to provide a Catholic response which, though not "official", nonetheless seeks to express a common direction and movement within Catholicism. The Theology of Karl Barth shows how a rethinking of basic issues in fundamental theology-concerning the relation of nature and grace, philosophy and theology, the "analogy of being" and the "analogy of faith"-might lead to a rapprochement between the two great rivers of Christianity, without compromising the center of gravity of either. In the process the book makes a major contribution to renewed understanding of Christianity in a secularized modern world. Co-published with Communio Books. "This reflection by one of the century's great Catholic theologians on the theology of one of the century's great Protestant theologians is an example of ecumenical dialogue at its best. One finds here a sympathetic and at the same time faithfully Catholic discussion of the major issues surrounding Barth's christocentricity. The appearance of an unabridged English translation of this book could hardly be more timely for the current religious situation in North America." - David L. Schindler, Gagnon Professor of Fundamental Theology, John Paul II Institute "No one should think he can quickly dispose of questions posed here offhandedly. It was precisely because writers were in the habit during the time of the Reformation of theologizing with a hammer that the split in the Church became irreparable. And to work at overcoming this split means much effort. Only the patient need apply." - Hans Urs von Balthasar
