Download or read book A New View of the Temperance Question Classic Reprint written by Edwin Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New View of the Temperance Question The remedy proposed in the following pages for the evils of intemperance may not appear, at first sight, to be specific enough as a basis for practical reform. Men of one idea, it is said, rule the world, though, like rays of the sun focused under a glass, they often end by setting the community into a blaze. We may lose in intensity what we gain in breadth. On the other hand, a good cause may be poised on so narrow a base as to become, to all intents and purposes, . A positive evil. Who could have anticipated that the greatest philanthropic enterprise of this age would con cern itself with what men drink and give no attention to the subject of food? Book What Is True Temperance The Temperance of Christ Or the Temperance of Mohammed

Download or read book What Is True Temperance The Temperance of Christ Or the Temperance of Mohammed written by Jean Paul Huter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is True Temperance? The Temperance of Christ or the Temperance of Mohammed?: God in the War AS Christ Is the Measure in All Things for all men and especially for Christians, we may now, after having examined his standpoint on the question of temperance, and more particularly with regard to drinking wine, make a direct and summarized comparison of his attitude with that of our prohibitionists. Christ invoked even his supernatural powers (habitually, says Lyman Abbott) to supply wine to the people, and he did not in a Single instance utter a word against the sale of wine. Our prohibitionists would make the selling, buying and giving away of wine and liquor, in any form and even in the smallest quantities, a crime, and they brand all those as sinners and criminals who supply liquor to the public, thus making according to their notions, christ him seif appear AS A deliberate sinner and themselves superior TO him and better than he. Christ himself indulged freely in wine, thus showing by his own example, which is always forcible and to the point, that this indulgence is as natural as harmless, and that it is good to drink in moderation to make the heart glad. Book The Temperance Bible Commentary

Download or read book The Temperance Bible Commentary written by Frederic Richard Lees and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance, Bible-Commentary: Giving at One View, Version, Criticism, and Exposition, in Regard to All Passages of Holy Writ Bearing on 'Wine' and 'Strong Drink, ' or Illustrating the Principles of the Temperance Reformation Christians everywhere unite in accepting the saying of St Paul that all God-inspired Scripture is "profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Tim. iii. 16, 17). But the profit derived from Divine Truth will necessarily vary according to die degree of teachableness and soundness of judgment brought to its perusal. The Bible is not accountable for the multifarious errors and abuses it has been employed to support; yet it is occasion for lamentation that on not a few great questions, both of Science and Morals, the Living Oracles have been strangely misapprehended and misapplied. Not the illiterate and vicious alone, but successive generations of scholars and divines, have enunciated mischievous fallacies professedly extracted from the Scriptures. In Physical Science, the fixity and recent creation of the earth; in Political Philosophy, the right of arbitrary government and Negro slavery; in Social Economy, the excellence of Polygamy; in Ecclesiastical ethics, the duty of persecuting heretics, and the obligation of unlimited submission to the clergy: these and other baneful dogmas have been zealously propounded, not as speculative theories, but as the practical teachings of the Divine Word. That such conclusions are now commonly discarded is not due to any change in the Record, but to a marked improvement in the manner of reading it; and to a perception that there can be no real contradiction between one portion of Holy Scripture and another, or between the Revelation of God in Nature and in His Written Will. Not less obviously true is it, that social customs and personal habits of diet and indulgence, continued from childhood upwards, may induce a state of mind inconsistent with the unbiased interpretation of Holy Writ For example, let a man be accustomed to regard intoxicating liquor as a necessity, or even a valuable auxiliary, of life, and as an innocent vehicle of enjoyment and social entertainment; let him remain ignorant of all that can be said and has been proved to the contrary; let him consider the intemperance arising from strong drink to be one of the inevitable forms of natural depravity, and therefore to be classed in its origin as well as its results with other sins of the flesh; let him persuade himself that the ordinary means of Christian evangelization are sufficient to eradicate this prolific vice with its dismal progeny of social curses: let all this be done, and it will no longer appear surprising that many of the allusions contained in both the Old and New Testaments are construed in favor of the use of such drink, and that other passages, clearly opposite in their tendency, should be ignored or explained away. This may be done in perfect good faith, and without any consciousness of the process by which the one-sided exegesis is wrought out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Temperance: A Sermon Preached in Christ Church, Albany Street Some of the Christians of St. Paul's time were troubled in their conscience about the matter of food. One believeth that he may eat all things another, who is weak, eateth herbs, so he says in the early part of this 14th chapter, which deals with this matter of eating meat. If you turn to the I. Corinthians, and look at the 8th and loth chapters, you will find that there too St. Paul considers the question of eating certain meat. The questions among the Romans and Corin thians were not exactly the same, but in considering both of them St. Paul appealed to the same great principles. If we look at what St. Paul says in both these cases we shall see that the same great reasons weigh with him, we shall find tod in him the same earnestness, and the same fullness of dealing with the question, the same wish and power to estimate fairly all the different points in a controversy, to deal rightly with both sides, the same zeal and the same moderation. By considering what he says in these two cases, somewhat alike yet in some ways dissimilar, we get to the great principles which underlie the right treatment of other cases somewhat like these, and yet differing in many points from them. First let us turn to the Epistle to the Romans. St. Paul is dealing there with this case. There were some Christians who had scruples about eating meat. They thought that the distinctions made by the law of Moses between clean and unclean meats were still binding on Christians, and some of them apparently were so afraid of eating unclean meat in ignorance that they would eat no meat at all. There were other Christians who had no such scruples and doubts, and who believed that they might eat all things. Book The Great Temperance Controversy

Download or read book The Great Temperance Controversy written by Robert Lowe Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Temperance Controversy: Comprising Pearl Series of Lectures The deepest problem of the age is the civil, just, and equitable adjustment of the liquor traffic, in a way that the mighty stream of human woe springing from this source shall be diminished, and the destruction of human life occasioned by this business shall be prevented. Without undue confidence in my ability to grapple with a subject of such endless complications and great magnitude, I have set my hand to the work of preparing a series of brief lectures, sending them forth as a plea for the drunkard, and as a feeble influence in the work of reclaiming fallen men through the appetite and passion of strong drink. I have in these lectures viewed the liquor enterprise of America as a carnival of blight and ruin, tending to the ultimate overthrow and destruction of Christian civilization. Its work of desolation moves on at a speed that distances every moral means or influence, by or through which an attempt has been made to cope with the evil. The authentic statistics relating to the rapid increase in magnitude of the manufacture and sale of liquor, as well as to the harrowing moral and physical effects and results of intemperance, tend to dissipate every ray of hope for the success and perpetuity of moral culture and religious teaching. However calm and dispassionate men may reason upon this subject, it is certainly true, in the light of statistics, that the liquor demon has subtilely coiled itself in the way, bidding defiance to the progress and advance movement of the Christian enlightenment and moral attainments of the people of our country. Viewed in the light of the startling increase of intemperance and the wide range of its field, it is not a fancy or ill-advised belief, that this means will eventually destroy the morality, social happiness, and domestic peace of every home in America. Solemnly impressed with the awful truth of these statements, I have, "first and last," advanced legal Prohibition as the only present and future hope for the rescue and reclamation of a race fallen through the captivating power and influence of alcoholic drink. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Temperance Are, then, the men, - and especially the ministers of religion, who try to maintain such a position as this, to be silent on the great question of the Temperance Reform, because forsooth they may be denounced by extremists, or misunderstood by the un thinking, or misrepresented by the unsern pulous? For one, I know of but one rule for my utterances, -to speak the truth which has first been earned by the sweat of the brain and the hard toil oi' the mind; to speak that truth in perfect love, but without a particle of fear. Even if by so doing, friends are alienated and enemies multi plied, I can choose no other course. To the truth alone, in its simple, naked unexag gerated beauty, I stand pledged. Let us then seek to raise the vexed question that is before us to the serene heights of a calm analysis, an unbiassed inquiry, and, if possi ble, a rational solution.
