Download or read book Communism in the Bible written by Jose Porfirio Miranda and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-19 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miranda will not be pigeonholed by the academy. It is to be strongly hoped that he is taken seriously, for there is in his writing the kind of discernment which may reform and renew Scripture study. Walter Brueggemann, Professor of Old Testament, Eden Theological Seminary This book, like the liberation theologies generally (Latin American, Black, feminist), challenges traditional 'intentional misunderstandings' of the Scripture by established powers. It allows familiar biblical passages, such as the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, to speak out with their original force and clarity--and the message sounds astonishingly new! An excellent translation by Robert Barr. Madeleine Boucher, Associate Professor of New Testament, Fordham University Jose Miranda's book is an extremely valuable statement, which advances the discussion of biblical economics to a new stage. Miranda minces no words in exposing the exegetical sleight-of-hand attempted by 'conscience-tranquillizing theologians.' His passionate and informed defense of 'Christian communism' will have to be reckoned with by all who have professed a willingness to be obedient to the Gospel. Richard J. Mouw, Professor of Philosophy, Calvin College A scholarly study in biblical teaching--brief, direct, powerful--which puts the burden of proof on those who would deny that original and authentic Christianity is communistic (not, to say, Marxist). This is vintage Miranda--erudite, passionate, persuasive, and above all, disturbing. Robert T. Osborn, Chairman, Department of Religion, Duke University

Book The Gospel of the Working Class

Download or read book The Gospel of the Working Class written by Erik S. Gellman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exceptional dual biography and cultural history, Erik S. Gellman and Jarod Roll trace the influence of two southern activist preachers, one black and one white, who used their ministry to organize the working class in the 1930s and 1940s across lines of gender, race, and geography. Owen Whitfield and Claude Williams, along with their wives Zella Whitfield and Joyce Williams, drew on their bedrock religious beliefs to stir ordinary men and women to demand social and economic justice in the eras of the Great Depression, New Deal, and Second World War. Williams and Whitfield preached a working-class gospel rooted in the American creed that hard, productive work entitled people to a decent standard of living. Gellman and Roll detail how the two preachers galvanized thousands of farm and industrial workers for the Southern Tenant Farmers Union and the Congress of Industrial Organizations. They also link the activism of the 1930s and 1940s to that of the 1960s and emphasize the central role of the ministers' wives, with whom they established the People's Institute for Applied Religion. This detailed narrative illuminates a cast of characters who became the two couples' closest allies in coordinating a complex network of activists that transcended Jim Crow racial divisions, blurring conventional categories and boundaries to help black and white workers make better lives. In chronicling the shifting contexts of the actions of Whitfield and Williams, The Gospel of the Working Class situates Christian theology within the struggles of some of America's most downtrodden workers, transforming the dominant narratives of the era and offering a fresh view of the promise and instability of religion and civil rights unionism.

Book Christ s Alternative to Communism

Download or read book Christ s Alternative to Communism written by E. Stanley Jones and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book...I said that this generation or at the most the next will have to decide between materialistic, atheistic Communism and the Kingdom of God on earth. I thought it would take a generation for this issue to come to a head. In half a generation the issue has become acute....But this book was primarily written not to emphasize the weaknesses or the strengths of Communism, but to present the Christian alternative to Communism. In rereading what I wrote I find myself holding to the main thesis of the book. That remains intact. There is a Christian alternative, and our emphasis should be to apply that alternative so that a soil might be created in which Communism could not grow....Communism as a system is not the answer. It will break down ultimately through inherent weaknesses. We must be ready with a demonstration of the Christian answer. The Christian answer is the Kingdom of God on earth. This book attempts to expound that answer and points to its application. I am gratified to know that the main plea is still relevant, and to my mind more relevant now than ever. - E. STANLEY JONESJanuary 3, 1951

Book Dedication and Leadership

  • Author : Douglas Hyde
  • Publisher : University of Notre Dame Pess
  • Release : 2016-10-07
  • ISBN : 0268159661

Download or read book Dedication and Leadership written by Douglas Hyde and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 14, 1948, Douglas Hyde handed in his resignation as the news editor of the London Daily Worker and wrote “the end” to twenty years of his life as a member of the Communist Party. A week later, in a written statement, Hyde announced that he had renounced Communism and, with his wife and children, was joining the Catholic Church. The long pilgrimage from Communism to Christ carried Douglas Hyde from complete commitment to Marxism, to a questioning uneasiness about Soviet Russia’s glaring contradictions of ideology and action, to a final rejection of the Party. In Dedication and Leadership, Hyde advances the theory that although the goals and aims of Communism are antithetical to human dignity and the rights of the individual, there is much to be learned from communist methods, cadres and psychological motivation. Hyde describes the Communist mechanics of instilling dedication, the first prerequisite for leadership. Here is the complete rationale of party technique: how to stimulate the willingness to sacrifice; the advisability of making big demands to insure a big response; the inspirational indoctrination; and the subtle conversion methods. In this small book, so large with implications, Douglas Hyde comments on both Communist and Catholic potential and their lack of maximum effectiveness. He advocates positive Catholic action, not just a negative anti-Communism, and he points out that the guidelines are now down for a decisive choice between total Communism and a total Christianity. Here is a realistic approach to an acute problem uncolored by emotional propaganda, and here is a realistic answer on how to inspire dedication for leadership.

Book Health Wealth and Happiness

Download or read book Health Wealth and Happiness written by David W. Jones and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be faithful in your giving and God will reward you financially. It's not always stated that blatantly but the promises of the Prosperity Gospel--or the name-it-and-claim-it gospel, the health-and-wealth gospel, the word of faith movement, or positive confession theology--are false. Yet its message permeates the preaching of well-known Christian leaders: Joyce Meyer, T. D. Jakes, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, and many more. The appeal of this teaching crosses racial, gender, denominational, and international boundaries. Why are otherwise faithful Christians so easily led astray? Because the Prosperity Gospel contains a grain of biblical truth, greatly distorted. For anyone who knows that Prosperity Gospel theology is wrong but has trouble articulating and refuting the finer points, this concise edition contains all the robust arguments of the hard-hitting original edition in a shorter, more accessible form.
