It represents a selection rather than a collection of music, and its object is to provide in a compact and convenient form all that is of chief importance for the use Of congregations. In encouraging the people to take their due part in Church Worship, it is desirable that the field of music be not too large. It may well be questioned whether there is actual need of the vast variety of tunes generally found in our hymnals. From seventy to ninety tunes serve all the requirements of the Christian Year. When a restricted number are used, congregations become thoroughly familiar with them, and an inclination to sing is fostered. This theory applies with equal force to choral responses, chants, and all the musical portions of the Church Service belonging to the people. Nevertheless, when it is thought advisable to use hymns omitted from the regular hymnal, it will be found that this publication provides a sufficient number of tunes to cover such additional wants.
