Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francisco Gómez de Sandoval, Duke of Lerma (1553-1625) is the last major unknown statesman in modern European history. Patrick Williams brings him dramatically to life and challenges the assumptions that historians have made about him and about Spanish history at a time of profound crisis, inviting a re-evaluation of the phenomenon of government by favourites in this seminal period of European history.Lerma served Philip III as his favourite and first minister between 1598 and 1618. His power dazzled contemporaries; one petitioner telling Philip that he had come to see him 'because I could not get an appointment with the Duke of Lerma'. Within a decade of assuming office Lerma had raised his family from humiliating poverty to great riches and was the greatest patron of the arts in Europe. His use of power provoked intense debate about the nature of corruption in government. Yet Lerma remained deeply ambivalent about his position. Determined to follow family tradition and retire into religious life to secure the salvation of his soul, he secured a cardinalate in 1617, ending his life as a prince of the Church.

Book Failed Imagination

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to explain how (mainly) American, but also British and other Western, policy makers have planned and largely managed to create an international order in their own image, the so-called ‘New World Order’. It shows how this seismic shift in international relations has developed through the major global wars of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It uses a wide variety of historical archival material to give the background to the current and historical American obsession with creating the world order, one that both reflects the American national interest but also can be said to have established the major security, economic, organisational and normative pillars of our epoch. In addition it provides excellent background reading for the current debate about American foreign policy and the origins of ‘neo-conservatism’ in international relations. This edition updates a very successful first edition of the title, with additional material to take into account changes in the global order since 2001 and the beginning of the ‘War on Terror’.

They look at the foundation of International Relations as an academic discipline and the competing theories that emerged within it. In an entirely new part to this volume, they also consider contemporary developments within the theories and methodologies of International Relations, including feminism and postcolonialism. Book Interim Measures of Protection in International Controversies

Download or read book Interim Measures of Protection in International Controversies written by E. Dumbauld and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author hopes that the present work may be of value to his colleagues in the legal profession who in one way or another are called upon to take part in the administration of international justice according to law. By a happy coincidence it was concluded on the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Permanent Court of International Justice. The author is conscious of divers shortcomings. In particular he wishes that the survey of national law in Chapter II were more comprehensive and complete, and regrets that he was not per mitted to examine the original documents in the case of Count ess Szechenyi before the Czechoslovak-Hungarian Mixed Arbi tral Tribunal. Investigation of the briefs and records of cases be fore the United States Supreme Court might bring to light infor mation not found in the reports. The author desires to thank his family and the authorities of Harvard University for enabling him to continue his legal studies until this book was written, and to thank for their stimulating suggestions the multitude of friends in many lands with whom he has had the benefit of valuable discussions in rem, not to speak of purely personal courtesies and indirect help. If there exists such a thing as international intellectual co-operation, this study may be regarded as one of its fruits.

Book Classics of International Relations

Download or read book Classics of International Relations written by Henrik Bliddal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classics of International Relations introduces, contextualises and assesses 24 of the most important works on international relations of the last 100 years. Providing an indispensable guide for all students of IR theory, from advanced undergraduates to academic specialists, it asks why are these works considered classics? Is their status deserved? Will it endure? It takes as its starting point Norman Angell’s best-selling The Great Illusion (1909) and concludes with Daniel Deudney’s award winning Bounding Power (2006). The volume does not ignore established classics such as Morgenthau’s Politics Among Nations and Waltz’s Theory of International Politics, but seeks to expand the ‘IR canon’ beyond its core realist and liberal texts. It thus considers emerging classics such as Linklater’s critical sociology of moral boundaries, Men and Citizens in the Theory of International Relations, and Enloe’s pioneering gender analysis, Bananas, Beaches and Bases. It also innovatively considers certain ‘alternative format’ classics such as Kubrick’s satire on the nuclear arms race, Dr Strangelove, and Errol Morris’s powerful documentary on war and US foreign policy, The Fog of War. With an international cast of contributors, many of them leading authorities on their subject, Classics of International Relations will become a standard reference for all those wishing to make sense of a rapidly developing and diversifying field. Classics of International Relations is designed to become a standard reference text for advanced undergraduates, post-graduates and lecturers in the field of IR.
