Book The Coloniality of Animal Monstrous Othering in Children s Books Films and Toys

Download or read book The Coloniality of Animal Monstrous Othering in Children s Books Films and Toys written by Donna Varga and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coloniality of Animal Monstrous Othering in Children’s Books, Films, and Toys examines how the portrayal of animals as physically distorted, behaviorally depraved, and intellectually defective serves to justify their debasement, violation, and destruction in materials directed toward young consumers. The author argues that this animal monstrous Othering arises from the Eurocentric belief in humans’ natural superiority over animals and the right to categorize animals in accordance with a scale of worthiness that parallels the subjugation of racialized persons. The chapters examine a variety of canonical figures like the dissolute wolf of Red Riding Hood stories and the disfigured titular character of the Wonky Donkey picture book alongside non-canonical animals including reprobate pigs, degenerate sharks, self-centered flamingos, and wicked piranhas. To counter this animal debasement, Varga juxtaposes these readings with an examination of materials that articulate harmonious animal-human interrelationships without dependence on styles of anthropomorphism that diminish animality.

  • Author : Erica Fudge
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2004-10-02
  • ISBN : 1861894430
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Animal written by Erica Fudge and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2004-10-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the pet that we live with and care for, to news items such as animal cloning, and the use of various creatures in film, television and advertising, animals are a constant presence in our lives. Animal is a timely overview of the many ways in which we live with animals, and assesses many of the paradoxes of our relationships with them: for example, why is the pet that sits by the dinner table never for eating? Examining novels such as Charlotte’s Web, films such as Old Yeller and Babe, science and advertising, fashion and philosophy, Animal also evaluates the ways in which we think about animals and challenges a number of the assumptions we hold. Why is it, for example, that animals are such a constant presence in children’s literature? And what does it mean to wear fake fur? Is fake fur an ethical avoidance of animal suffering, or merely a sanitized version of the unacceptable use of animals as clothing? Neither evangelical nor proselytizing, Animal invites the reader to think beyond the boundaries of a subject that has a direct effect on our day-to-day lives.

Book Talking Animals in British Children s Fiction 1786 1914

Download or read book Talking Animals in British Children s Fiction 1786 1914 written by Tess Cosslett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her reappraisal of canonical works such as Black Beauty, Beautiful Joe, Wind in the Willows, and Peter Rabbit, Tess Cosslett traces how nineteenth-century debates about the human and animal intersected with, or left their mark on, the venerable genre of the animal story written for children. Effortlessly applying a range of critical approaches, from Bakhtinian ideas of the carnivalesque to feminist, postcolonial, and ecocritical theory, she raises important questions about the construction of the child reader, the qualifications of the implied author, and the possibilities of children's literature compared with literature written for adults. Perhaps most crucially, Cosslett examines how the issues of animal speech and animal subjectivity were managed, at a time when the possession of language and consciousness had become a vital sign of the difference between humans and animals. Topics of great contemporary concern, such as the relation of the human and the natural, masculine and feminine, child and adult, are investigated within their nineteenth-century contexts, making this an important book for nineteenth-century scholars, children's literature specialists, and historians of science and childhood.

Chapter 2 Fascinating Cat Species Balinese: Chartreux: Egyptian Mau: Chapter 3 - A Cat’s History A Cat’s Life Fascinating Features Conclusion Author Bio Introduction The smallest feline is a masterpiece. Leonardo da Vinci Have you ever thought of a cat as masterpiece in motion? There is no doubt cats are fascinating creatures, from the tip of their ears all the way to their furry little toes! Cats have a rich history going back many years, long before you and I were even born. Many nations, but especially ancient Egypt, worshiped cats as gods and goddesses. Some Egyptians loved their cats like family, and gave them beautiful jewelry to wear around their necks. However, other nations feared this unique creature and tried to destroy them, only to realize much later how important cats truly are. Thankfully, cats survived, and today are one of the most popular pets in the United States. But they are not only pets. Did you know some cats even ran for office? In the small town of Talkeetna, Alaska a fun loving cat called Stubbs won the election! And it has been reported that he’s an excellent mayor. But that’s not all. He even has his own Facebook page affectionately called Mayor Stubbs. Cats and dogs also have quite an interesting history, even though most people claim the animals hate each other on sight! While that may be true in some cases, in others it is quite the opposite. The Journal for Applied Animal Behavior Science published an article in 2008, which explained the problem between cats and dogs. It’s something that affects us as people too! Have you guessed yet? Well, it’s quite simple. It’s called…“lack of communication.” Don’t be surprised at this fact. Just like us, if cats and dogs don’t “talk things out” they won’t get along. So the Journal noted the importance of introducing the feline and the canine (Cat and dog), early on in life. In other words, they should be introduced at less than 6 months old. If they are, then both cat and dog will understand each other and coexist together in peace! Kitten & Puppy playing together Perhaps this plan will not work for every single cat, but it’s worth a try. Of course cats have a very unique personality, and some may even be a bit moody. But on the whole, they are a beautiful expression of nature’s great diversity!
