Book Son of a Preacher Man

Download or read book Son of a Preacher Man written by Jay Bakker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2001-12-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Son of a Preacher Man Jay Bakker, son of famous televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, tells the compelling story of growing up in the glaring lights of a television studio. It's all here: the Bakker family's public disgrace, the fall of the PTL (Praise The Lord) media empire, and Bakker's subsequent plunge into a morass of anxiety and selfdestruction. But Son of a Preacher Man is more than a tell-all -- it is a story that dramatizes the human toll of this tragedy on the Bakker family, with insight into the seismic shifts that nearly destroyed his father and wrecked his parents' longtime marriage. It is the story of a prodigal son's return to the true meaning of God's love and acceptance. It is the story of a boy who was lost, but on the journey back from ruin finds a better way to understand and live life. It is the story of discovering God's grace and of becoming a man. Despite years of disillusionment, alcoholism, and heartbreak, Bakker managed to continue on his spiritual quest. First he worked to redeem his father...then his faith. Bakker began his service with Revolution, a ministry for skateboarders, punk rockers, and hippiesthe street kids he knew best. He shared the message that saved his life -- the message of Jesus that God's love is infinitely generous. Now Bakker has a large and growing ministry among the tattooed and pierced of downtown Atlanta who feel rejected by the traditional Church yet flock to hear his message of grace and love. Ultimately, Son of a Preacher Man is a story about resurrection -- of one lost young man, of his disgraced and imprisoned father, and of the hope that can't be destroyed by the machinations of power-hungry preachers, The long, lonely road that Bakker traveled taught him that you can't earn or make yourself worthy of the love of God, but if you are willing to let go and open up, that infinite love is waiting to welcome you home with open arms.

Book You Can Preach to the Kids Too

Download or read book You Can Preach to the Kids Too written by Carolyn C. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many preachers are aware of the presence of children in Sunday morning worship and wish to include them effectively in worship, but have a hard time figuring out how to do so. Preachers who are unhappy with children's sermons in general and all the books of printed children's sermons in particular are looking for a theologically and educationally sound approach to preaching to congregations that include children. This practical guide offers preachers a variety of ideas and helps for making any sermon one that is suitable for both children and adults. The author includes an introductory chapter on the importance of children's participation in worship during their elementary school years as part of their faith development. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how children "listen" to a sermon and the importance of planning for children in preparing sermons.

Book Daughter of a Preacher Man

Download or read book Daughter of a Preacher Man written by Anna Picard and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reflection, though brutally honest, provides insight to the conflicts that face the children of ministers, pastors, religious clergy, deacons, and church leaders. It challenges fellow Christians, to nurture the lives of these children without punishing judgments. This work provokes congregants and leaders to nurture preachers kids, and provide heartfelt guidance and vigilant prayer. It encourages prayer-warriors, to guard over the hearts of preachers kids. The book leads the reader toward self-examination and self-correction. The author makes a noteworthy disclaimer; I do not have a license in counseling, a degree in psychology or theology. I am not an elder or deacon in any church, nor do I hold office as a board member on any religious organization. I am not a minister, pastor or evangelist. I am neither an acclaimed author nor an authority of any kind. Forgive me if I have misquoted scripture or taken verses out of context. However I hope the Bible verses I have quoted throughout this book would not seem preachy; but then again, I am a preachers daughter. I trust that, these scriptures will grab at your hearts and soothe your soul-wounds. I hope they will provide a new perspective and they would be as you have never heard them or thought of them before. The author writes from a unique perspective, that of a preachers kid. I am the voice of a group that is easily misunderstood and even shunned. We are the group that, should know better. Just being born into the subculture of preachers kids we are automatically judged by all, (the righteous and the unrighteous alike). We are expected to... by default, be good, be upright, make no mistakes, be all things to all men all of the time. We are to be mature in all judgments from the moment of birth, and on and on it goes. Few can comprehend our journey toward our Father on a road less traveled. This journey will be enlightening and comforting to all who read it. It will bring hope to those who are confused and lost. The book although empathetic to all parties, makes all accountable for their behaviors toward others and to the Heavenly Father. It is with great love and sensitivity that the author leads the reader to finding relationship with Jesus. Just for a moment, the reader can walk in the shoes of preachers kids with understanding and empathy. It brings much-needed direction and guidance. The author attempts to bridge the gap between all of you and preachers kids. It also attempts to reconcile the disconnection between preachers kids and Jesus. This work is raw and honest. It is a reflection of a lost generation who need to know the true power of redemption and the priceless gift of grace and love.
