This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal, 1873, Vol. 30: A Monthly Record of Medicine, Surgery and Collateral Sciences This, presents a striking illustration of the conversion of force, and of the truth of the proposition that force is never lost, only converted. Among the reflex effects of neuralgias are various affections of the skin and its appendages, developed in the manner just de scribed. Erysipelas is occasionally observed; changes in the color of the hair are frequent. It is rare to find a neuralgic sub ject whose hair has not become more or less gray, in the vicinity of the affected nerves. These decolorizing changes are some times produced with great rapidity, it being sometimes quite possible to observe a marked increase in the grayness of the hair after a severe attack of neuralgia; It is asserted by some authors, that these changes are sometimes temporary, that the color will return to the bleached hair, upon the cessation of the pain, to be again discharged upon its recurrence. I have not observed this personally, but it is quite plausible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Times, Vol. 37: A Monthly Journal of Medicine, Surgery and the Collateral Sciences; January-December, 1909 A diet overrich in fat, may also cause trouble by interfering with digestion in this way: The ordi nary fats, such as butter, melt freely at the temper ature of the body. As they melt they cause a coat ing about the other portions of the meal and prevent a proper attack by the gastric juice. This delays digestion and by keeping the food overlong in the stomach promotes fermentation. This in turn liber ates butyric acid, the substance that is present in rancid butter, which is an active irritant to the mu cous membrane of the stomach. Temperature and surroundings modify our power of utilizing fat, a matter of everyday observation, for we instinctively eat less greasy food in summer, while in cold weather pastry and such fat containing foods are more read ily tolerated. Indeed, if we turn to the dwellers in arctic climates, we find that fat is the staple of food. A box of tallow candles finds its way to the heart (and incidentally to the stomach) of the Esquimaux maiden much more readily than any other love token, and a cake of soap is rapturously received, though she never washes. It is significant that the milk of arctic animals is peculiarly rich in fat, that of the whale and' walrus. For instance, containing about 40 per cent., an evident provision for the protection or the young of these creatures against the extreme cold of their environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Record, Vol. 40: A Weekly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; July 4, 1891-December 26, 1891 The patient was a phy sician, aged twenty nine, for six years a resident of Panama, where he contracted a chronic dysentery. He came north in May, 1889, went to Germany, and in Vienna had a severe recurrence of his disease. He returned to Baltimore in December. Soon after, an irregular fever began, with occasional chilly sensations, sweats, loss of flesh, and sallow complex ion. Signs of abscess of the liver developing, the liver was aspirated, incised, and two large abscess cavities found in the right lobe. In the thick, creamy pus Dr. Osler found amoebae in large numbers. The organisms could be found in the pus removed at the dressings up to the time of the patient's death, two weeks later. In this case diarrhoea was a marked feature. Tenesmus was rarely present; the frequency of the stools from four to twelve in twenty-iour hours. Their character varied much. Sometimes there were large brownish evacuations with little or no mucus more frequently three to four ounces were passed at a time, and scattered through the brown ish liquid mucus blood and small whitish sloughs could be seen. Ou several occasions the stools seemed to be made up of a gelatinous mucus streaked with blood, and twice large grayish sloughs were found. The amoeba were rarely found in the brownish liquid stools. In the mucus they were more frequent, but they were met with in large numbers only in the small grayish fragments, por tions no doubt of sloughs which were found in variable numbers in almost every mucoid stool. D1. Osler goes on to describe the amoebae, from which it appears that they resembled those of others, though not reaching the maximum size, measuring in his case ten to twenty micro millimetres in diameter.
