It is found that the previous assignments of 1-methyl-4-nitrobenzotriazole and 1-methyl-7-nitrobenzotriazole are incorrect. The methylation of 4-nitrobenzotriazole has been re-studied and the structures of the two isomeric products are established. The methylation of 5-nitrobenzotriazole has also been repeated. Several new dinitro compounds resulted from the nitrations of 5-nitrobenzotriazole and 1-methyl-nitrobenzotriazoles have been isolated.
