Judging from the long lives of some of the Buffalo players, I must admit that such is the case. Here is my old friend L. L. Hodges, with whom I played many a game forty years ago and since, and now at the age of eighty nine he plays a few hours nearly every afternoon. Mr. Hodges commenced playing at the age of ten years, and at fifteen was probably the best player in this country, and for many years was not excelled by any player in the United States, and I have no doubt he is now the strongest player of his age. When novices com plained of his ungenerous tactics, he would quietly reply that he was playing checkers and was not familiar with parlor amusements. His regular customers stuck to him persistently because he would not let them beat him if he could help it. Owing to the great amount and variety of his practice, he was an exceedingly strong end game player. He could see (or feel, for he quickly ran over the board with his hands after each play) a familiar ending coming up long before it took form to the ordi nary player. The average player will spend twenty years selecting certain lines, and meanwhile he has delved into so many variations which fill his mind to 'such an extent that he has no brain space left for strong lines of play. I believe the reader will agree with me when I state that there is a limit to the human brain. Otherwise a world's champion would never lose a game. It took the writer twenty-five years to collect these games, which have been selected from all sources and I have given credit as near as possible. If the reader will concentrate on these lines and not allow himself to be sidetracked on other lines, he will soon be able to hold his own with very good players. Do not try to solve problems, but commit them to memory, at least one end-game problem daily. The play is arranged so that the student will have a nucleus to build on when ready to branch into two-move style of play.
