Book Music as a Chariot

Download or read book Music as a Chariot written by Richard K. Thomas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music as a Chariot offers a multidisciplinary perspective whose primary proposition is that theatre is a type of music. Understanding how music enables the theatre experience helps to shape our entire approach to the performing arts. Beginning with a discussion on the origin and nature of time, the author takes us on an evolutionary journey to discover how music, language and mimesis co-evolved, eventually coming together to produce the complex way we experience theatre. The book integrates the evolutionary neuroscience of the human brain into this journey, offering practical implications and applications for the auditory expression of this concept—namely the fundamental techniques artists use to create sound scores for theatre. With contributions from directors, playwrights, actors and designers, Music as a Chariot explores the use of music to carry ideas into the human soul—a concept that extends beyond the theatrical to include film, video gaming, dance, or anywhere art is manipulated in time.

Book Time Eternity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emily Dickinson
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2020-07-17
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Time Eternity written by Emily Dickinson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-07-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection shows one of the most constant themes throughout Emily Dickinson's poetry -her fascination with mortality. Her unique take on death is that it is universal, inevitable and not to be feared. She describes is so often in terms of joy and relief, using images often of clouds and dawn. In Dickinson's poems, it is a comfort in its inevita-bility. Although she does use religious terms when speaking of it, she doesn't have the typical religious feel around it: there isn't that feeling of escaping endless troubles on Earth to final exaltation in the worship of God. In her poems, it has more of a peaceful serenity to it, nothing grandiose. She doesn't go into disliking life at all, but more that Death is a comforting conclusion to life. Some of the poems were written in response to her losing a friend or family member to death and there is certainly more pain and sadness connected to the loss than any fear when she talks of her own death. As someone who was always quite scared of death as a child and teen, her poems brought me comfort. I was raised in a strict religious upbringing and the afterlife was painted in very specific details along with all the trials and tribulations of life on earth that would precede it. So in reading her poems, I was able to muse about this inevitability with a peace and detachment that I couldn't find anywhere else. In a letter to her cousin, Dickinson wrote: "I believe we shall in some manner be cherished by our Maker- that the One who gave us this remarkable earth has the power still farther to surprise that which He has caused. Beyond that all is silence...". It is that theme -the affection for Earth, the confidence of a peaceful afterlife despite our ignorance of it- that threads through these poems. Reading these poems allows us to feel the serenity of calm in the face of the inevitable, a sense of timelessness in our own limited amount of time. Emma Wallace, Singer-songwriter.

Book Sweet Chariot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ann Patton Malone
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2000-11-09
  • ISBN : 0807863157
  • Pages : 412 pages

Download or read book Sweet Chariot written by Ann Patton Malone and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet Chariot is a pathbreaking analysis of slave families and household composition in the nineteenth-century South. Ann Malone presents a carefully drawn picture of the ways in which slaves were constituted into families and households within a community and shows how and why that organization changed through the years. Her book, based on massive research, is both a statistical study over time of 155 slave communities in twenty-six Louisiana parishes and a descriptive study of three plantations: Oakland, Petite Anse, and Tiger Island. Malone first provides a regional analysis of family, household, and community organization. Then, drawing on qualitative sources, she discusses patterns in slave family household organization, identifying the most significant ones as well as those that consistantly acted as indicators of change. Malone shows that slave community organization strongly reflected where each community was in its own developmental cycle, which in turn was influenced by myriad factors, ranging from impersonal economic conditions to the arbitrary decisions of individual owners. She also projects a statistical model that can be used for comparisons with other populations. The two persistent themes that Malone uncovers are the mutability and yet the constancy of Louisiana slave household organization. She shows that the slave family and its extensions, the slave household and community, were far more diverse and adaptable than previously believed. The real strength of the slave comunity was its multiplicity of forms, its tolerance for a variety of domestic units and its adaptability. She finds, for example, that the preferred family form consisted of two parents and children but that all types of families and households were accepted as functioning and contributing members of the slave community. "Louisiana slaves had a well-defined and collective vision of the structure that would serve them best and an iron determination to attain it, " Malone observes. "But along with this constancy in vision and perseverance was flexibility. Slave domestic forms in Louisiana bent like willows in the wind to keep from shattering. The suppleness of their forms prevented domestic chaos and enabled most slave communities to recover from even serious crises."
