Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chariot of the Flesh No deterioration in sense-power is known to have taken place without causing deterioration to the possessor unless at the same time accompanied by the development of a new perceptive faculty.' Man alone is credited with being an exception to this rule. He is inferior in keenness of sense to the animals below him, yet superior in power. It is also noticeable that the savage is in like manner superior to the civilized man. It is therefore prob able that man is really the possessor of a sixth sense as yet imperfectly developed and unequally distributed. So sacred to me is the memory of our friendship, that, even now, I shrink from the task of narrating his strange and curious history. A strong impulse, however, urges me to break silence. The village of Anstead, near which we both lived, is in Surrey, possibly the best county in England to find mixed society. Here the old-fashioned farmers, the labourers who have never travelled as far as London, and a few country squires are mingled with, and influenced by, retired London shopkeepers, merchant princes--with or without H's--and a sprinkling of literary and scientific dabblers; these last are regarded with suspicion by all, but especially by the retired Army and Navy magnates.

Book excerpt: One of the rarest Olympia titles, first published in 1955 as Vol. 12 of the Traveller's Companion Series, later reprinted in the impossibly rare "Ophir Books" set, and not seen since. Chariot of Flesh is the story of Baroness Carla, deceased at the introduction, with recollections of the woman's sensuality by her many paramours, told to a questing former lover. Alfred Chester (who who wrote this book as "Malcolm Nesbit") has largely vanished from the literary scene, but at one point in the late '50s achieved status for Jamie Is My Heart's Desire. He died in Israel in 1971 of a drug overdose, after having twice been ejected from the Beat paradise of Morocco.

Nobody seemed to know to which class Alan Sydney belonged, and strange to say he was admitted, chiefly, I fancy, because he was an eccentric bachelor, into all societies. As I am wealthy and have been a confirmed idler from my youth, the same privilege has been granted to me; a privilege of which, however, I am seldom inclined to take advantage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chariot of Fire: The Cars in Prophecy and History, With the Wonders of Rapid Traveling and Significance of the Modern Railway System The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm and the clouds are the dust of His feet (Nah. 1: 3.) He whose car the winds are and the clouds The dust that waits upon His sultry march, When sin hath moved Him and His wrath is hot, Shall visit earth in mercy, shall descend Propitious in His chariot. Cowper's Task. 1 It is obvious that the poet, in thus describing our Lord's return from heaven, not only drew on the sentiment quoted above from the inspired prophet, but, as can be seen, well nigh makes use of the prophet's words. Evidently the whole trend of this first chapter is adventual. Not alone temporal judgment is intended in the severe words, nor temporary deliverance meant in the glowing promises. On the contrary, verses 3 and 5 open up Advent, and bring the final conflagration. Very solemnly and firmly does Rev. Dr. Gill relate these to "The last day when the world and all the wicked inhabitants of it will be burnt up, as in 2 Pet. 3: 10." (Com.) Verses 7, 9, 12 are, as Jerome wrote, couched in terms of comfort for the church of Christ, and are too strong and far reaching to indicate only a temporal deliverance from Senacherib and Assyria, - for affliction did often rise up upon Israel in subsequent years. Book Yale Classics Vol 1

Download or read book Yale Classics Vol 1 written by Aristotle and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 3412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Greek literature has a profound impact on western literature at large. In particular, many ancient Roman authors drew inspiration from their Greek predecessors. Ever since the Renaissance, European authors in general, including Dante Alighieri, William Shakespeare, John Milton, and James Joyce, have all drawn heavily on classical themes and motifs. Even today authors are fascinated with Greek literature, and still great works of literature are based on ancient myths and plays. The readers can still relate to these works of art and learn from them, even though written two millennials ago. This collection is based on the required reading list of Yale Department of Classics. Originally designed for students, this anthology is meant for everyone wanting to know more about history and literature of this period, interested in poetry, philosophy and drama of Antient Greece.
