Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of fourteen original essays and one poem in honor of the prominent medievalist Gerard J. Brault, upon the occasion of his retirement from teaching at the Pennsylvania State University. World-renowned for his contributions to the French medieval epic (in particular "La Chanson de Roland") and French-Canadian cultural studies, Professor Brault is affectionately remembered as "Mr. Song of Roland" by his colleagues for his unique interpretation of Roland as a triumphant christian hero, rather than a tragic feudal warrior. Among the friend, former students, colleagues, and admirers who contributed to this festschrift are; William Calin (preface), Jeanette Beer, Keight Busby, Kimberlee Campbell, Robert Francis Cook, Bernard Guidot, Edward Heinemann, Catherine Jones, Hans-Erich Keller, Donald Maddox, Andre de Mandach, Emanuel Mickel, Rupert Pickens, Jean Subrenat, Joan Williamson, Jacques Ribard, and the editors, David and Mary Jane Schenck. All essays center on aspects of "La Chanson de Roland" and the French medieval epic in general.

Book The Millst tter Exodus

Download or read book The Millst tter Exodus written by D. H. Green and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1966 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millstatter Exodus, a German epic of the twelfth century, is a poetic version of the opening chapters of the book of Exodus, treating the events of the early life of Moses and culminating in the crossing of the Red Sea and the destruction of the Hebrews' pagan enemies. In form it represents the second attempt at a biblical epic on the large scale after the revival of German vernacular literature in the late eleventh century. Professor Green analyses the Millstatter Exodus in form and in context. He compares it with its predecessor, the Wiener Genesis, and with its biblical source, throwing light on the early development of the German epic in the twelfth century and on the poetic intentions of the author of the Exodus. Professor Green believes that the Millstatter Exodus can best be understood allegorically against the background of the crusading movement, and he shows that it is one of the first literary attempts in Germany to come to terms with the crusades and the problem of Christian warfare.

Book The GERMAN HERO POLITICS PRAGMATISM

Download or read book The GERMAN HERO POLITICS PRAGMATISM written by Brian Murdoch and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Germanic Hero Brian Murdoch looks at the role the warrior-hero plays within a set of predetermined political and social constraints. the hero is not a sword-wielding barbarian, bent only upon establishing his own fame; such fame-seekers (including some famous medieval literary figures) might even fall outside the definition of the Germanic hero, the real value of whose deeds are given meaning only within the political construct. Individual prowess is not enough. The hero must conquer the blows of fate because he is committed to the conquest of chaos, and over all to the need for social stability. Brian Murdoch discusses works in Old English, Old and Middle High German, Old Norse, Latin and Old French, deliberately going beyond what is normally thought of as 'heroic poetry' to include the German so-called 'minstrel epic', and a work by a writer who is normally classified as a late medieval chivalric poet, Konrad von Wurzburg, the comparison of which with Beowulf allows us to span half a millennium.

Book Moult a sans et vallour

Download or read book Moult a sans et vallour written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William W. Kibler is one of the most productive and versatile medievalists of his generation. Some scholars and students think of him primarily as a specialist in the medieval epic, whereas others consider him to be an Arthurian scholar. He is of course both, but he is also much more: a consummate philologist and editor of texts and also a prolific and accomplished translator. Above all, those who know him best know him as an extraordinarily generous and modest man. The present volume represents an effort by thirty medievalists, specialists in fields as diverse as William Kibler’s interests, to indicate our respect for him, aptly described in the foreword as “scholar, teacher, friend.”

Download or read book An Empire of Memory written by Matthew Gabriele and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-03-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning shortly after Charlemagne's death in 814, the inhabitants of his historical empire looked back upon his reign and saw in it an exemplar of Christian universality - Christendom. They mapped contemporary Christendom onto the past and so, during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries, the borders of his empire grew with each retelling, almost always including the Christian East. Although the pull of Jerusalem on the West seems to have been strong during the eleventh century, it had a more limited effect on the Charlemagne legend. Instead, the legend grew during this period because of a peculiar fusion of ideas, carried forward from the ninth century but filtered through the social, cultural, and intellectual developments of the intervening years. Paradoxically, Charlemagne became less important to the Charlemagne legend. The legend became a story about the Frankish people, who believed they had held God's favour under Charlemagne and held out hope that they could one day reclaim their special place in sacred history. Indeed, popular versions of the Last Emperor legend, which spoke of a great ruler who would reunite Christendom in preparation for the last battle between good and evil, promised just this to the Franks. Ideas of empire, identity, and Christian religious violence were potent reagents. The mixture of these ideas could remind men of their Frankishness and move them, for example, to take up arms, march to the East, and reclaim their place as defenders of the faith during the First Crusade. An Empire of Memory uses the legend of Charlemagne, an often-overlooked current in early medieval thought, to look at how the contours of the relationship between East and West moved across centuries, particularly in the period leading up to the First Crusade.
