Book The Changing Social Structure of England and Wales

Download or read book The Changing Social Structure of England and Wales written by David Marsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume I of twenty-one in the Class, Race and Social Structure Series. Originally published in 1958, this is the second edition of a study that now focuses on the changing social structure of England and Wales between 1871 and 1961. The main object of this book, therefore, as it was in the first edition, is to introduce the student and the general reader to the maze of social statistics, which have become available, concerning the social structure of England and Wales. The emphasis throughout is on applied or descriptive statistics and a knowledge of statistical techniques therefore those (and they seem to be many) who have an instinctive dislike of mathematics need not be deterred from following the attempt which has been made to analyse the changing social structure with the aid of social statistics.

Book Population Since the Industrial Revolution

Download or read book Population Since the Industrial Revolution written by Neil Tranter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1973, this book is an introduction to the study of population history since the Industrial Revolution and focuses on the experience of England and Wales. It provides both a comprehensive survey of the vast array of specialist literature and a thorough explanation of the sources and methodology of historical demographic analysis. Throughout special emphasis is given to the need to recognise that the historical pattern of population growth in England and Wales has been broadly similar to that observed elsewhere in Western Europe. The sources and techniques of historical demography are discussed and the general outline of population growth between 1688 and 1939 examined. The factors responsible for the dramatic increase in population growth during the late 18th and 19th Centuries are analysed as are the causes of the abrupt down-turn in rate of population following World War 1. The part played by population change in the development of the British economy and the impact of population change on society are also covered. By integrating the social and economic impact of population change with sources and methods, this text fills a gap and will be of essential reading to students in economics, sociology and social history.

Book An Economic History of England 1870 1939

Download or read book An Economic History of England 1870 1939 written by William Ashworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive account of a decisive epoch in England's economic development by a leading economic historian. 'Works of economic history often get bogged dwon in figures - so many machines, so much unemployment, often, too, they are histories of technology, not of economic organization. Professor Ashworth goes to the opposite extreme in a most praiseworthy way: his book is actually good to read. Though there are tables of statistics (eleven of them), the book is an essay in interpretation, not an encyclopedia; it enriches our understanding rather than adding to our knowledge.' A.J.P. Taylor. This classic book was first published in 1960.

Book Birth Control and the Population Question in England 1877 1930

Book excerpt: Soloway examines the origins of the modern birth control movement in England in the wider context of the dramatic decline in fertility that first became apparent in the 1880s.
