Book Middle Class African Marriage

Download or read book Middle Class African Marriage written by Christine Oppong and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s among peoples of the third world migration, paid employment, and urban living had caused changes in domestic economies, in decision making in households, and in the sexual division of labour and power. This was particularly so in areas formerly subjected to colonial domination and therefore the influence of European mores and institutions. This book, previously published in 1974 as Marriage Among a Matrilineal Elite, this edition in 1981, provides one of the few detailed accounts of such changes, by a writer who has lived the kind of life she describes, that of the urban educated Akan of Southern Ghana – people who have migrated from farming and fishing villages to Accra the capital to find employment in government institutions after protracted higher education, often overseas. The study is particularly interesting because it focuses upon people from an ethnic area practicing matrilineal descent and inheritance, in which women and men have traditionally both worked in agriculture: in which husbands and wives have customarily resided in separate houses, affording both sexes considerable autonomy as spouses and in which women have held important political offices, as well as sharing responsibilities for maintenance of dependent children. Akan women provide an important model of responsible energetic females, who have in the past and to some extent in the present, avoided the domestic trap of wifely dependence. But, as we read, the trap is open to those who forsake traditional patterns of economic endeavour or whose resources vis á vis their men folk are reduced. The book was also a significant contribution to the comparative sociology of the family at the time, providing an exercise in methodology in which the aim has been to evolve ways of documenting and comparing two major aspects of change in conjugal family relationships. On one hand, the division of labour, resources and power between spouses – the ‘jointness or segregation’ of the conjugal role relationship – and on the other, the extent to which the conjugal family is a functionally discrete unit in a number of domestic activity areas: in popular and ambiguous terms whether the family is ‘extended’ or ‘nuclear’. The use of sociological concepts developed in other areas of the world gives this book a significant position in the development of a cross culturally valid sociology of the family. The subject matter and conceptual frameworks used here will thus be of interest to sociologists, economists and anthropologists in general and to specialists in African and Black studies, Women’s Studies and Sex Roles in particular, as well as to the male and female feminists around the world.

Book The Scattered Family

Download or read book The Scattered Family written by Cati Coe and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s unprecedented migration of people around the globe in search of work has had a widespread and troubling result: the separation of families. In The Scattered Family, Cati Coe offers a sophisticated examination of this phenomenon among Ghanaians living in Ghana and abroad. Challenging oversimplified concepts of globalization as a wholly unchecked force, she details the diverse and creative ways Ghanaian families have adapted long-standing familial practices to a contemporary, global setting. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research, Coe uncovers a rich and dynamic set of familial concepts, habits, relationships, and expectations—what she calls repertoires—that have developed over time, through previous encounters with global capitalism. Separated immigrant families, she demonstrates, use these repertoires to help themselves navigate immigration law, the lack of child care, and a host of other problems, as well as to help raise children and maintain relationships the best way they know how. Examining this complex interplay between the local and global, Coe ultimately argues for a rethinking of what family itself means.

Book African Successes Volume II

Download or read book African Successes Volume II written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-09-25 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of African economic development frequently focus on the daunting challenges the continent faces. From recurrent crises to ethnic conflicts and long-standing corruption, a raft of deep-rooted problems has led many to regard the continent as facing many hurdles to raise living standards. Yet Africa has made considerable progress in the past decade, with a GDP growth rate exceeding five percent in some regions. The African Successes series looks at recent improvements in living standards and other measures of development in many African countries with an eye toward identifying what shaped them and the extent to which lessons learned are transferable and can guide policy in other nations and at the international level. The second volume in the series, African Successes: Human Capital turns the focus toward Africa’s human capital deficit, measured in terms of health and schooling. It offers a close look at the continent’s biggest challenges, including tropical disease and the spread of HIV.

Book Children in Changing Worlds

Download or read book Children in Changing Worlds written by Ross D. Parke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children live in rapidly changing times that require them to constantly adapt to new economic, social, and cultural conditions. In this book, a distinguished, interdisciplinary group of scholars explores the issues faced by children in contemporary societies, such as discrimination in school and neighborhoods, the emergence of new family forms, the availability of new communication technologies, and economic hardship, as well as the stresses associated with immigration, war, and famine. The book applies a historical, cultural, and life-course developmental framework for understanding the factors that affect how children adjust to these challenges, and offers a new perspective on how changing historical circumstances alter children's developmental outcomes. It is ideal for researchers and graduate students in developmental and educational psychology or the sociology and anthropology of childhood.

Book A synopsis on The Nuclearization Of Ghanaian Families by Dr Albert Kpoor

Download or read book A synopsis on The Nuclearization Of Ghanaian Families by Dr Albert Kpoor written by Bangura Samuel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2023 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, University of Ghana, Legon (School of Social Sciences), course: Sociology, language: English, abstract: The nuclearization of the Ghanaian family represents a significant sociocultural shift with transformative implications for familial structures and dynamics. This study delves into the evolving nature of family units in Ghana, emphasizing the gradual transition from extended to nuclear family setups. Key areas of exploration include the influence of urbanization, socioeconomic factors, and changing cultural norms on the restructuring of family units. The study aims to unravel the dynamics of intergenerational relationships, gender roles, and the redefinition of familial responsibilities within the nuclearized context. Additionally, the impact of globalization and modernization on the Ghanaian family structure will be critically assessed. The implications of the nuclearization trend on social cohesion, support systems, and the well-being of family members will be scrutinized. Attention will be given to both positive outcomes, such as increased autonomy and flexibility, and potential challenges, including the strain on traditional support networks and caregiving responsibilities. The author argues that the decline of the extended family structure is underpinned by certain factors, resulting in some consequences on the family life in Ghana. There are several factors that have led to the family nuclearization in Ghana, or the diminishing structure of the Ghanaian extended family.
