This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge of the Present Crisis I did not intend to write an essay on the War, and I am glad to see that I have avoided doing so. Many informing treatises are throwing light on every as pect of the great struggle, and it is not likely that there will be lack of more. But when all the special treatises have had their say, an inner problem still re mains unsolved. In what mood shall a Christian, or for that matter an idealist of any kind, face the catastrophe? With what considerations and insights can he support his faith and hope? And how can he harmonize his ideals with his ne cessities of action in a time of war? The morale of our people critically depends upon their answer to such questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Present Crisis and a Way Out Classic Reprint written by Homer Coolidge Chapin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present Crisis and a Way Out Hence, to repeat, popular rebellions are always justly and naturally waged over some question afiecting the pri vate pocket-book. Today, the workers feel that they are not receiving a just share of the fruits of their toil. They are convinced, too, that they have not a reasonably potent voice in the management of industry which their labor has so materially aided to develop. Into these two chief causes all the present unrest resolves itself. It needs but a superficial survey of the industrial situation to see that the cause of the workers is sound, and that justice demands that our present system be overhauled. It must be obvious to all, except those creatures of privi lege who, like the Bourbons, never learn anything, that things cannot continue much longer as they are. Like every other na tion, it is very full of sinners, and many of the sinners are in high places, where they can blow loud blasts and pull strong ropes and often exercise the determining influence; but noth ing shall shake us from the conviction that the great majority of men in this republic desire to know the truth and to do the right, and that if they do not do the right thing it is because they do not know the truth or see clearly what is the most important question. Book The Present Crisis

Download or read book The Present Crisis written by Charles A. Sumner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present Crisis: Oration by Charles a Sumner, of San Francisco, California, Delivered at Great Barrington, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1861 It is an observation which invariably attaches itself to a review of all great movements destined to secure permanent and blessed results, that their inception and their growth into systematic lines, is very gradual; that their originators and conductors approach their decisive actions, not only with un hurried steps, but with much of reluctance and unconscious ness. That which can be expressed in the description of mere impulse is far from revealing the might and majesty of their motives and deeds. A single though grievous insult may not provoke a wise man to wrath and strife. A series of injuries were long and patiently endured, and then humbly com plained of, by our ancestors, before the idea of concerted rebellion and separation was entertained and developed. Their representations of grievances made to the authorities and the inhabitants of the mother country, were submitted for years in language of unmistakable subordination and affection; nay, with positive and oft-repeated declarations of a profound loyalty, which lent a more stinging sorrow to their burden of regret and supplication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter on the Present Crisis Under these circumstances the inquiries - How this state of things has been brought about, and What is to be the remedy, are questions which deeply agitate the public mind. It is quite clear that there has been no deliberate, preconceived design, on the part of the North to originate any system of measures to destroy the Union - nothing intended to effect such a resuBut, admitting there was no such design, it is contended by the South that measures have been taken of such oppressive character, and so destructive of the equal rights of their section, as to compel a separation. Adequate Remedies Within The Constitution For All Complaints Made. It is a sufficient answer to such allegations, that, if any wrongs have been committed, the Constitution itself furnishes a remedy. There are at least two sufficient means of redress of such grievances, before it can be necessary to resort to the measure of an overthrow of the government. We can appeal to the calm, deliberate decision of our National Judiciary, whose duty it is to construe the Constitution according to the original intent and design of its framers. Book Considerations on the Present Dangerous Crisis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Considerations on the Present Dangerous Crisis Classic Reprint written by Owen Ruffhead and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Considerations on the Present Dangerous Crisis With whatever specious pretences the art of party may veil its ambitious designs, experience abundantly evinces, that interest and resentment are the ruling motives which actuate the competitors. However they pretend to differ in principle, yet, when in power, they agree in pursuing the same corrupt and ruinous measures. We may learn from the recent example of two learned bodies, that they can even change their style with their fortunes; and that the one can, with wonderful facility, adopt the language of the other. As parties therefore, they would not be worth a moment's attention, did they not obstruct and injure public welfare, by their mutual struggles to mount the airy pinnacle of promotion. Nevertheless, when we reflect how much the nation suffers, how much the crown is distressed, by their fatal altercations, then we can no longer remain unconcerned spectators; nor neglect that duty, to which our amiable Sovereign has condescended to invite every honest man. At the close of a glorious and successful war, who did not hope that the government would be studious to cultivate the blessings of peace? That they would endeavour to alleviate the heavy burthens which oppress the public; to improve the police of the Kingdom; and promote the prosperity of the people? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crisis & Renewalpresents a radical view of how all successful organizations evolve and renew themselves and of what managers must do to lead the revival. Contrary to traditional organizational theory, which emphasizes rationality and control in the management of change, this book argues that there are times when managers must deliberately create crises by committing acts of "ethical anarchy" in order to break the constraints of success and renew their organizations.Hurst develops a model of change -- the organizational ecocycle -- to explain how even successful organizations become systematically vulnerable to catastrophe. He brings the model to life with stories of crisis and renewal from both his own management and consulting experiences and a cross-section of enterprises -- from the hunter-gatherers of the Kalahari and the Quakers of the Industrial Revolution to contemporary organizations such as 3M and Nike.Born when people come together to capitalize on an opportunity, young organizations are usually dedicated to innovation and learning. As they grow and age, they become preoccupied with performance. Sooner or later they become constrained by their own success. For, in the pursuit of performance, what were once self-selected roles become designated tasks, flexible teams become rigid structures, open networks give way to closed systems, and control supplants commitment as people change. The risk, says Hurst, is that this single-minded, performance orientation may render organizations dangerously insensitive to subtle changes in the environment, seriously damaging their ability to learn.Renewal-changing a performance organization back into a learning organization-demands the restoration of the excitement, emotional commitment, and values often missing from large enterprises. It involves returning to the founding principles of the firm to reconnect the past with the present. In the aftermath of crisis, only shared values can hold a renewing organization together.Crisis & Renewalgives managers the theoretical grounding and the practical tools for leading their organizations to new life.
