Download or read book The Centennial Record of Freewill Baptists written by Fwb Press and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has seemed fitting to gather into this permanent form some of the memorials of the Freewill Baptist Centenary. The principal portion of the volume is composed of papers that were especially prepared to be read at the Centennial Conference in 1880, but with the probability that they would be preserved in their present shape. These include the Conference sermon, the exercises at the meeting of aged ministers, and the historical sketches of the missionary, educational, anti-slavery, temperance and Sunday school work of the denomination. The others, excepting the poems but including the tables at the close of the volume, were primarily prepared for the book where they now first appear. The papers have been written by different individuals, and although they treat of branches of work that were closely related, yet it is believed that repetition has been in the main avoided, while unity has been preserved.

Download or read book Baptists in America written by Thomas S. Kidd and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puritans hounded the Baptists out of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Four hundred years later, Baptists are the second-largest religious group in America, and their influence matches their numbers. Yet the historical legacy, and the inherently fractured nature of their faith, makes Baptists ever wary of threats from within as well as without. Kidd and Hankins, both practicing Baptists, weave the threads of Baptist history alongside those of American history to show how one religious denomination was transformed from persecuted minority into a leading actor on the national stage, with profound implications for American society and culture.

Download or read book Strangers and Pilgrims written by Catherine A. Brekus and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Meuse Clay, who barely escaped a public whipping in the 1760s for preaching without a license; "Old Elizabeth," an ex-slave who courageously traveled to the South to preach against slavery in the early nineteenth century; Harriet Livermore, who spoke in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844--these are just a few of the extraordinary women profiled in this, the first comprehensive history of female preaching in early America. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Brekus examines the lives of more than a hundred female preachers--both white and African American--who crisscrossed the country between 1740 and 1845. Outspoken, visionary, and sometimes contentious, these women stepped into the pulpit long before twentieth-century battles over female ordination began. They were charismatic, popular preachers, who spoke to hundreds and even thousands of people at camp and revival meetings, and yet with but a few notable exceptions--such as Sojourner Truth--these women have essentially vanished from our history. Recovering their stories, Brekus shows, forces us to rethink many of our common assumptions about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American culture.

Book Hidden Histories in the United Church of Christ 2

Download or read book Hidden Histories in the United Church of Christ 2 written by Barbara Brown Zikmund and published by The Pilgrim Press. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume, Dr. Zikmund continues the untold stories in the formation of the United Church of Christ (UCC). Volume 1 focused on those ethnic groups, or ecclesiastical movements, often overlooked by UCC historical orthodoxy. This second book of essays does two things: it provides additional information about groups not covered in the original collection, and it explores the sources of some principles and practices important to the UCC identity. Volume 2 invites readers to enhance their knowledge of history as an important source of spiritual strength for these times. It also examines more deeply what it means for the UCC to celebrate its "unity in diversity." It explores such areas as Lutheran and Reformed Cooperation; German Evangelical Protestants; Origins of the Christian Denomination in New England; Evangelical Pietism and Biblical Criticism; Women's Mission Structures and the American Board; Religious Journalism; Philip William Otterbein and the United Brethren; from German Reformed Roots to the Churches of God; The Congregational Training School for Women; and Chinese Congregationalism. Contributors include: J. Martin Bailey, Dorothy C. Bass, Curtis Beach, Thomas E. Dipko, Matthew Fong, J. Harvey Gossard, Rose Lee, Elizabeth C. Nordbeck, Horace S. Sills, Priscilla Stuckey-Kauffman, Dorothy Wong, Barbara Brown Zikmund, and Lowell H. Zuck.
