Book The Causal Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment and Current Account

Download or read book The Causal Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investment and Current Account written by Danish Ahmed Siddiqui and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the relationship between FDI and current account (CA) in Pakistan using the Johansen-Juselius cointegration technique and the Granger causality test. The study results indicate that FDI and CA are cointegrated and thus exhibit a reliable long-run relationship. The Granger causality test findings indicate that the causality between FDI and CA is uni-directional. However, there is no short-run causality from FDI to CA and vice versa. Therefore, as a policy implication that FDI inflows may cause to the deterioration of the balance of payments, in the long run, it should be taken into account when policymakers decide to implement policies to attract foreign investors.

Book excerpt: Economic indicators such as GDP, current account deficit, foreign direct investment, and total credit, have played an important role in adjusting a country's economy. In order to obtain desirable results, policy makers should understand how much valuable these economic tools can be while they are making their decisions. This book intends to help create an understanding of how these indicators can be managed and made use of in adjusting a country's economy policies not only for policy makers but also for academics and those dealing with the market. With this respect, the relationship among economic indicators such as current account deficit, GDP, foreign direct investment, and total credits for G7 countries for the period between 1990-2011 was studied using panel co-integration tests and causality tests developed by leading academics all around the world.

Book excerpt: The more liberal a country's foreign exchange system, the more foreign direct investment is likely to be independent of current account and other capital flows.Fry, Claessens, Burridge, and Blanchet examine flows of foreign direct investment to 46 developing countriesto test whether such flows are autonomous or accommodating vis-a-vis the current account and other capital flows.Using Granger-causality tests, they find that:Requirements to surrender export proceeds to the monetary authorities and the existence of special exchange rates for some capital account transactions reduce the probability that foreign direct investment is independent. The more liberal a country`s foreign exchange system, the more foreign direct investment is likely to be independent or exogenous.Foreign direct investment is associated with a larger increase in capital formation when it is independent than when it is Granger-caused by other capital flows. This paper - a product of the Debt and International Finance Division, International Economics Department - is part of a larger effort in the department to study the determinants and impact of foreign direct investment. We employed Industrial Production Index (IPI) as a measure of Economic Growth. The stationarity of the data series are checked using Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) Test and tested for the existence of co-integration. Johansen Co-integration model found that the Brazil alone co-integrated among the selected countries at levels. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) employed to trace the existence of long run relationship. The results of VECM found that Growth leads FDI bi-directionally for Brazil, Russia and South Africa and FDI leads Growth uni-directionally for India and China respectively.

Book On the Causal Relationship Between Stock Markets Valuation and Foreign Direct Investment

Download or read book On the Causal Relationship Between Stock Markets Valuation and Foreign Direct Investment written by Dr S and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International business research has predominantly focused on how foreign direct investment relates to the asset-side of non-financial firm's balance sheet, the finance-specific factors have been ignored to a great extent while studying the foreign direct investment decision. But since these factors are not merely a by-product of a firm's competitive strength or weakness, they deserve attention when investment patterns are to be interpreted. Financial specific strategies are important to all firms but are particularly important to MNEs in emerging capital markets where the assumption that MNEs have no problems raising capital to engage in international investments doesn't hold true. The major objective of this paper is to provide a review of the literature regarding the financial aspects of foreign direct investment. This review allows us to distinguish between two streams of studies. The first stream deals with the stock markets valuation effect on firms' international investment decision while the other addresses the stock market reactions to foreign direct investment announcements. The latter is important to form a complete picture about the relationship between stock markets and foreign direct investment. Using a qualitative analytical method with an exploratory nature, and building on the case of India which has recently joined the top ten developing and transition economies as a source of foreign direct investment, this paper intends to suggest a conceptual framework where a causal relationship between stock market valuation and foreign direct investment announcements can be drawn.

Book excerpt: Foreign Direct Investment is globally considered as an inevitable vehicle for the prospective development of developing countries. Across countries it has proved significantly time and again that FDI enhances the development of the economy in many channels. This paper examines the existence of link between FDI and economic growth. Pair wise Granger Causality Analysis is used to study causality. Gross Domestic Product is proxied with Economic Growth. With two lags, our results suggest that there exists a bi directional relationship between lagged values of FDI and GDP.
