Book The Catholic Mind Vol 24

Download or read book The Catholic Mind Vol 24 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Mind, Vol. 24: June 22, 1926 Therefore, I take pride to stand here in the name of Christ as a priest of the Catholic Church ordained and sent to preach His message to the men and women who are patiently doing the hard work of this everyday world. I think with the Popes and Bishops of the last half cen tury that social charity and social justice are the greatest need of the world to-day, and woe to us if we do not teach and preach them, and woe to the industrial and social order of the world if it despise the Christian moral message of the Church and her divine founder, for there is no other power under heaven whereby it shall be saved. There have been in this world in historic times only two civilizations, a pagan and a Christian. They have met and joined in mortal combat, now one is triumphing and now the other. The dominant outstanding note in a pagan civilization is this, that it tries to crowd down and enslave Labor, while a Christian civilization tries to emancipate and elevate the workingman. 'in historic times the Roman Catholic Church has always been the greatest friend of Labor. Capitalism of the soulless, Godless kind has existed in Pagan times as well as in Christian, and the Catholic Church again and again has joined in deadly battle with this capitalism in its attempts to crowd down and enslave Labor. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete exploration is the first systematic analysis ever comparing the central religious doctrinal aspects of Christianity with those in Confucianism. Huang's work carefully covers the whole history of the Confucian-Christian tradition, and ends up with genuinely new insights. He elaborates on the idea of transcendence in the Confucian tradition in a manner which enables an interpretation of the Christian means of salvation. His explanation of transcendence, and its connection with the means of salvation, is new and unique, offering a clue to the special understanding of salvation germane to the specifically Chinese intellecual history. Huang's book is a must for anyone interested in the Sino-Western cultural encounter.

Book Introduction to the Spiritual Life

Download or read book Introduction to the Spiritual Life written by Brant Pitre and published by Image. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling exploration of the biblical foundations, contemplative practices, and spiritual path of Jesus himself—from the bestselling author of The Case for Jesus “What happens when a biblical theologian explores classic spirituality? This book. Pitre’s students have asked, Why have we never heard this before? The reader wonders the same.”—Dr. David Fagerberg, author of Liturgical Mysticism The path of following Jesus is an ancient and storied spiritual tradition. Yet many believers are not familiar with the three major forms of prayer and the three stages of spiritual growth that exist to bring them closer to God. In his most personal book yet, Brant Pitre, PhD, draws on the riches of the Bible, the words of Jesus, and the writings of mystics across the centuries to shed light on the mystery—and wonder—of the spiritual life. Starting with the age-old belief that the path of prayer is not only informative but transformative, Dr. Pitre explores • the scriptural roots of the major forms of prayer: vocal prayer, meditation, and contemplation • the purgative, illuminative, and unitive stages of spiritual growth • the spiritual exercises of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving • the Jewish roots of the Lord’s Prayer • Lectio Divina: how to pray with the Bible • seven vices and their seven opposing virtues • the battle of prayer: how to deal with difficulty and distractions • the “dark night of the soul” in the Scriptures Full of sacred truths, contemplative insights, and practical steps, Introduction to the Spiritual Life is a biblical road map of the spiritual landscape that enables us to follow Jesus as our primary guide.

Book The Catholic Reformation

Download or read book The Catholic Reformation written by Michael Mullett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Reformation provides a comprehensive history of the 'Counter Reformation in early modern Europe. Starting from the middle ages, Michael Mullett clearly traces the continuous transformation of the Catholic religion in its structures, bodies and doctrine. He discusses the gain in momentum of Catholic renewal from the time of the Council of Trent, and considers the profound effect of the Protestant Reformation in accelerating its renovation. This book explores how and why the Catholic Reformation occurred, stressing that moves towards restoration were underway well before the Protestant Reformation. Michael Mullett also shows the huge impact it had not only on the papacy, Church leaders and religious ritual and practice, but also on the lives of ordinary people - their culture, arts, attitudes and relationships. Ranging across the continent, The Catholic Reformation is an indispensable new survey which provides a wide-ranging overview of the religious, political and cultural history of the time.
