Book The Catechism of Thomas Becon S T P Chaplain to Archbishop Cranmer Presbendary of Canterbury c

Download or read book The Catechism of Thomas Becon S T P Chaplain to Archbishop Cranmer Presbendary of Canterbury c written by Thomas Becon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-26 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parker Society was the London-based Anglican society which printed in fifty-four volumes the works of the leading English Reformers of the sixteenth century. It was formed in 1840 and disbanded in 1855 when its work was completed. Its name is that of Matthew Parker, the first Elizabethan Archbishop of Canterbury, who was known as a great collector of books. The stimulus for the foundation of the society was provided by the Tractarian movement, led by John Henry Newman and Edward B. Pusey. Some members of this movement spoke disparagingly of the English Reformation, and so some members of the Church of England felt the need to make available in an attractive form the works of the leaders of that Reformation.

Book Foundations of Political Economy

Download or read book Foundations of Political Economy written by Neal Wood and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom claims that the seventeenth century gave birth to the material and ideological forces that culminated in the Industrial Revolution and the rise of capitalism. Not true, according to Neal Wood, who argues that much earlier reformers—Dudley, Starkey, Brinklow, Latimer, Crowley, Becon, Lever, and Thomas Smith, as well as the better-known More and Fortescue—laid the groundwork by fashioning an economic conception of the state in response to social, economic and political conditions of England. Wood's innovative study of these early Tudor thinkers, who upheld the status quo yet condemned widespread poverty and suffering, will interest historians, political scientists, and social and political theorists.

Book Shakespeare s Religious Language

Download or read book Shakespeare s Religious Language written by R. Chris Hassel Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious issues and discourse are key to an understanding of Shakespeare's plays and poems. This dictionary discusses over 1000 words and names in Shakespeare's works that have a religious connotation. Its unique word-by-word approach allows equal consideration of the full nuance of each of these words, from 'abbess' to 'zeal'. It also gradually reveals the persistence, the variety, and the sophistication of Shakespeare's religious usage. Frequent attention is given to the prominence of Reformation controversy in these words, and to Shakespeare's often ingenious and playful metaphoric usage of them. Theological commonplaces assume a major place in the dictionary, as do overt references to biblical figures, biblical stories and biblical place-names; biblical allusions; church figures and saints.

Book Nurture and Neglect Childhood in Sixteenth Century Northern England

Download or read book Nurture and Neglect Childhood in Sixteenth Century Northern England written by Loretta A. Dolan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurture and Neglect: Childhood in Sixteenth-Century Northern England addresses a number of anomalies in the existing historiography surrounding the experience of children in urban and rural communities in sixteenth-century northern England. In contrast to much recent scholarship that has focused on affective parent-child relationships, this study directly engages with the question of what sixteenth-century society actually constituted as nurture and neglect. Whilst many modern historians consider affection and love essential for nurture, contemporary ideas of good nurture were consistently framed in terms designed to instil obedience and deference to authority in the child, with the best environment in which to do this being the authoritative, patriarchal household. Using ecclesiastical and secular legal records to form its basis, hitherto an untapped resource for children’s voices, this book tackles important omissions in the historiography, including the regional imbalance, which has largely ignored the north of England and generalised about the experiences of the whole of the country using only sources from the south, and the adult-centred nature of the debate in which historians have typically portrayed the child as having little or no say in their own care and upbringing. Nurture and Neglect will be of particular interest to scholars studying the history of childhood and the social history of England in the sixteenth-century.

Book Lived Religion and Gender in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Lived Religion and Gender in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by Sari Katajala-Peltomaa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an exploration of lived religion and gender across the Reformation, from the 14th–18th centuries. Combining conceptual development with empirical history, the authors explore these two topics via themes of power, agency, work, family, sainthood and witchcraft. By advancing the theoretical category of ‘experience’, Lived Religion and Gender reveals multiple femininities and masculinities in the intersectional context of lived religion. The authors analyse specific case studies from both medieval and early modern sources, such as secular court records, to tell the stories of both individuals and large social groups. By exploring lived religion and gender on a range of social levels including the domestic sphere, public devotion and spirituality, this study explains how late medieval and early modern people performed both religion and gender in ways that were vastly different from what ideologists have prescribed. Lived Religion and Gender covers a wide geographical area in western Europe including Italy, Scandinavia and Finland, making this study an invaluable resource for scholars and students concerned with the history of religion, the history of gender, the history of the family, as well as medieval and early modern European history.
