Book Secrets Sex and Spectacle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark D. West
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15
  • ISBN : 0226894118
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Secrets Sex and Spectacle written by Mark D. West and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leader of a global superpower is betrayed by his mistress, who makes public the sordid details of their secret affair. His wife stands by as he denies the charges. Debates over definitions of moral leadership ensue. Sound familiar? If you guessed Clinton and Lewinsky, try again. This incident involved former Japanese prime minister Sosuke Uno and a geisha. In Secrets, Sex, and Spectacle, Mark D. West organizes the seemingly random worlds of Japanese and American scandal—from corporate fraud to baseball cheaters, political corruption to celebrity sexcapades—to explore well-ingrained similarities and contrasts in law and society. In Japan and the United States, legal and organizational rules tell us what kind of behavior is considered scandalous. When Japanese and American scandal stories differ, those rules—rules that define what’s public and what’s private, rules that protect injuries to dignity and honor, and rules about sex, to name a few—often help explain the differences. In the cases of Clinton and Uno, the rules help explain why the media didn’t cover Uno’s affair, why Uno’s wife apologized on her husband’s behalf, and why Uno—and not Clinton—resigned. Secrets, Sex, and Spectacle offers a novel approach to viewing the phenomenon of scandal—one that will be applauded by anyone who has obsessed over (or ridiculed) these public episodes.

Advocate for cancer victims. Human being. Melissa Etheridge is all of these things, and all of these elements of who she is have played an instrumental role in her music from the beginning of her career to the present day. The Words and Music of Melissa Etheridge examines Melissa Etheridge's contributions to pop music in the tradition of other greats such as Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, and Rod Stewart. Written by a music scholar and Etheridge fan, this book investigates her work chronologically by time period, underscoring her growth as a songwriter and musician and demonstrating how her music reflected the events in her life, both positive and negative. Author James E. Perone spotlights how Etheridge's songs defy traditional gender roles and stereotypes and appeal to general audiences with their universal themes, yet serve those in the lesbian community because of the specific applicability of her words to the members of this minority group. The book supplies expert, critical, and easy-to-understand analysis of all of the songs of Melissa Etheridge's studio albums from the 1980s through to her autobiographical and reflective album, 4th Street Feeling, released in 2012.

Book excerpt: This is a story about my life and surviving too much drinking, drugs and pushing the limits. I chose this life as it was an option that appealed to me. I had a chance to take the Jr. Varsity coaches advice and concentrate on playing basketball and making the team. But on the walk home that night I was thinking about going partying with all my friends. And that's what I did and have enjoyed my life but think of what my life would be like and what I may have accomplished if I was thinking about practicing basketball on the way home and not going out to party. I hope I can make a difference in people's lives by showing them that Hightide's way is not the best option. You will see how unbelievably lucky I have been not to be dead or in serious trouble. Please do not try any of these events as I have tried them for you and can tell you they are not worth it, thanks for reading, Michael Peter Carvalho. Five percent of what I make on this book will go to charities to help children to honor my parents Dennis and Gladys Mae Hawley Carvalho

Book Sting and Religion

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2021-01-06
  • ISBN : 1725272261
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Sting and Religion written by Evyatar Marienberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the back cover of one of his most groundbreaking solo albums, . . . Nothing like the Sun of 1987, Sting (Gordon Matthew Sumner, b. 1951 in Wallsend, UK) somberly stands close to a statue of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The album was released a few months after his own mother, Audrey, died. The picture was taken on the island of Montserrat, where he was recording the album, apparently on the day of her death. “I said goodbye to my mother, as I had a recording date in Montserrat, and she died a week later.” When asked by the author if his mother was particularly connected to Mary, and if this was why he chose this image, he replied “No, but I did.” This evocative photograph and Sting’s quick answer encapsulate the two pillars of this book: a microhistory of a specific British Catholic parish in the 1950s–60s, and the impact that growing up there had on Sting’s artistic output. And beyond that, this book opens a window onto the influence of Catholic education and imagination on millions of less famous people who had similar upbringings.
