The Judges of Election In doing this, my purpose is, without comment upon the gravity of the case, and avoiding everything like speech-mak ing, to deal with the cases in their purely legal aspects. Nor do I mean to step from the line of dry argument - the narrow stoney way of the law. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Suffragists in Washington DC The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote

Download or read book Suffragists in Washington DC The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote written by Rebecca Boggs Roberts and published by History Press Library Editions. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Suffrage Parade was the first civil rights march to use the nation's capital as a backdrop. Despite sixty years of relentless campaigning by suffrage organizations, by 1913 only six states allowed women to vote. Then Alice Paul came to Washington, D.C. She planned a grand spectacle on Pennsylvania Avenue on the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration--marking the beginning of a more aggressive strategy on the part of the women's suffrage movement. Groups of women protested and picketed outside the White House, and some were thrown into jail. Newspapers across the nation covered their activities. These tactics finally led to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Author Rebecca Boggs Roberts narrates the heroic struggle of Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party as they worked to earn the vote.

Book The Voting Rights Act of 1965

Download or read book The Voting Rights Act of 1965 written by Kevin J. Coleman and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voting Rights Act (VRA) was successfully challenged in a June 2013 case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder. The suit challenged the constitutionality of Sections 4 and 5 of the VRA, under which certain jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination in voting-mostly in the South-were required to "pre-clear" changes to the election process with the Justice Department (the U.S. Attorney General) or the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The preclearance provision (Section 5) was based on a formula (Section 4) that considered voting practices and patterns in 1964, 1968, or 1972. At issue in Shelby County was whether Congress exceeded its constitutional authority when it reauthorized the VRA in 2006-with the existing formula-thereby infringing on the rights of the states. In its ruling, the Court struck down Section 4 as outdated and not "grounded in current conditions." As a consequence, Section 5 is intact, but inoperable, unless or until Congress prescribes a new Section 4 formula.
