Book excerpt: This is a book for all who enjoyed the experiences of watching, hearing, and riding the wooden carousel during the golden age of American amusement history -- and for those who continue to appreciate the carousel, or merry-go-round, as a very special element of the American cultural landscape. This book contains 107 black-and-white photographs and printed images. Carrie Papa invited thirty-seven 'insiders' -- people who lived behind the lights, music, magic, and fantasy of the antique wooden carousel to reveal the purposes, experiences, memories, and emotions of their involvement with this form of amusement and entertainment. The reader will hear the stories of manufacturers of carousels and the craftsmen who made them, owners and managers of amusement parks, carousel operators and support personnel, riders, and those who have studied, preserved, and revitalised carousels and preserved interest in them. These accounts provide windows onto the everyday life of participants in the industry -- onto the reality behind the nostalgia -- and document an important part of our national amusement heritage.

Book Finders Keepers

Book excerpt: When author Virginia M. Bolen found a watch in the parking lot of the shelter in which she volunteered in August of 1997, she had no idea the trouble that would follow. In Finders Keepers, she shares her story of being arrested and charged with felony theft in a small town in Montana. This accounts narrates Bolens encounter with a justice system run amuck. She describes what happened to her and how she fought back over a period of years to gain vindication. She was harassed, intimidated, jailed, and pilloried in the press for a crime that law enforcement knew she didnt commit. Through her own words, public records, correspondence, and newspaper articles, she portrays the personalities involved, including jail inmates (even the girlfriend of a serial killer), sheriffs deputies, county attorneys, bridge players, the mother of a world champion poker player, and a Montana State Senator. Finders Keepers gives insight into the personalities and mindset of authorities, who ignoring facts and common sense, persist in yielding their power. Its a case thats been followed by the legal community, even outside of Montana, because of its challenge to prosecutorial immunity.

Download or read book Murder at the Carousel written by Linda Bartash-Dawley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who knew carousels could be so deadly? This non-fiction book shows just how dangerous carousels could be, with most of the incidents occurring between the 1890s to early 20th century. The book centers on the tragic death of a 17-year-old carousel engineer killed by a rider. On Friday, June 17, 1892, William R. Weaver was working as an engineer at a carousel in Niagara Falls, N.Y., when he was shot and killed. William's father joined in on the search for the killer as a newly-appointed deputy. The search crossed several states and involved several suspects over the following year. The book additionally tells the story of other fatal accidents where a carousel was involved. In 1914, a stray bullet killed a father watching a carousel with his children in Greensboro, N.C. A carousel pole fell down and gravely injured a Rochester N.Y. man in 1900. In 1892, a four-year-old jumped between wooden horses and was severed by a merry-go-round cable in Camden, NY. An electrician working on an Atlantic City carousel in 1918 was crushed in its gears, while the machine was spinning with riders. While this may book details 'the darker side of carousels', it's an interesting look at an earlier time.

Book Guiding Lights

  • Author : Shona Riddell
  • Publisher : Exisle Publishing

  • ISBN : 1775594610
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Guiding Lights written by Shona Riddell and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have a long history of keeping the lights burning, from tending ancient altar flames or bonfires to modern-day lighthouse keeping. Yet most of their stories are little-known. Guiding Lights includes true stories from around the world, chronicling the lives of the extraordinary women who mind the world’s storm-battered towers. From Hannah Sutton and her partner Grant, the two caretakers living alone on Tasmania’s wild Maatsuyker Island, to Karen Zacharuk, the keeper in charge of Cape Beale on Canada’s Vancouver Island, where bears, cougars and wolves roam, the lives of lighthouse women are not for the faint of heart. Stunning photographs from throughout history accompany accounts of the dramatic torching of Puysegur Point, one of NZ’s most inhospitable lighthouses; ‘haunted’ lighthouses in across the US and their tragic tales; lighthouse accidents and emergencies around the world; and two of the world’s most legendary lighthouse women: Ida Lewis (US) and Grace Darling (UK), who risked their lives to save others. The book also explores our dual perception of lighthouses: are they comforting and romantic beacons symbolizing hope and trust, or storm-lashed and forbidding towers with echoes of lonely, mad keepers? Whatever our perception, stories of women’s courage and dedication in minding the lights — then and now — continue to capture our imagination and inspire.
