Book The Carbon Quest

Download or read book The Carbon Quest written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2024-03-30 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carbon Quest Theo wants to lower the world's carbon impact by setting up programs that offset carbon emissions. Summary "The Carbon Quest" is a fun and inspiring story about a young environmentalist named Theo who decides to take on the dangerous task of reducing the world's carbon footprint in order to fight climate change. The entertaining chapters of the story focus on Theo's commitment to protecting the earth and his creative ways of doing so. The book also talks about sustainability and how people's actions affect the world. Theo starts the story by putting a tree as his first attempt to reduce his carbon footprint after learning about how bad global warming is. This small but important action set him on the path to being more eco-friendly in the future. Theo, his friends Maya, and Jake, decide to work together and make the "Green Team" after seeing how helpful it can be. They want to make the whole town part of their environmental goals. As the story goes on, Theo and the Green Team go on a number of adventures, each one dealing with a different environmental problem. They are reducing water use, starting a recycling program to stress how important it is to recycle, installing a solar panel to learn more about renewable energy sources, and encouraging people to live in a more sustainable way by holding events like an eco-friendly festival, a clean-up drive, and a bicycle brigade to cut down on carbon emissions. The story shows kids how easy, everyday actions can help make the world a better place and how important it is to be environmentally friendly. Some problems come up along the way for Theo, but people want to help him because he is clever, persistent, and dedicated to protecting the environment. Through working together and using the community's resources, Theo and the Green Team show that even small acts can have a big effect. "The Carbon Quest" is a story about being strong, having hope, and how important it is to protect the earth. Seeing it reminds us that everyone, of any age, can help protect the earth and make the future more stable. Because of Theo's mission, kids want to become eco-warriors themselves, with information and the drive to make the world a better place. Chapter 1: Theo's Big Idea Theo was a small child who loved nature and liked to try new things. On a beautiful afternoon, Theo was reading a book in his comfortable room. He came across a part about climate change. The book explained how businesses, cars, and trees were putting out too much carbon dioxide, which was making the Earth too hot. Theo was sad and worried about things like people, animals, and forests on Earth. When he looked out his window at the pretty green trees swaying in the wind, he became very determined. He wanted to say, "I want to help the Earth. I don't want it to get sick because of global warming." Theo thought about what he could do and remembered a lesson from school about how trees are good for the environment. Like Earth's superheroes, trees take in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen, which are both necessary for life. In addition, they clean the air, give animals a place to live, and block the sun on hot days. Theo had a great thought at that point. He said, "I'll start by planting a tree! If one tree can do so much good, lots of trees can make a huge difference!" Theo started his task with great enthusiasm. When he talked to his parents about his idea, they were very welcoming. They helped him figure out where in their backyard would be the best place for his first tree. Theo decided to adopt a young oak tree after learning that they are strong and can live for hundreds of years. Taking a deep breath and a spade in his hand, Theo jumped onto the ground. He used care to put the young oak in the hole, then smoothed it out and added dirt. When he watered the new tree, he felt like he was giving the Earth a wonderful gift. Theo's goal has only just started; he planted his first tree. He was sure that this tree would get big and strong, which would help clean the air and stop global warming. That being said, Theo knew that one tree wouldn't be enough to solve the problem. In his dreams, he would start other environmental projects and plant a lot more trees. Theo dreamed of a society where everyone worked together to protect the earth and make it a better place for all living things. Now that his big idea was taking off, Theo was ready to tell everyone about it and encourage them to do the same. His neighbors, friends, and teachers were going to hear him talk about global warming and how simple things like planting a tree might help. Theo's journey was far from over, but he was still eager to make his dream of a healthier Earth come true. His work to slow down global warming by doing things like planting trees to offset carbon emissions was a huge step toward a better future. Chapter 2: The Green Group Theo was excited to tell his friends about his plans for a better future after his first tree-planting project went well. He got together with two of his best friends, Maya and Jake, on a sunny morning. They shared his love of the outdoors and new experiences. He was very enthusiastic about planting trees and how even one tree could make a big difference in the fight against global warming. He also said that if everyone planted trees at the same time, the effect would be many times stronger. Maya and Jake were impressed by what he said, so they agreed right away to support Theo. Due to this, a group of friends formed the "Green Team" whose goal was to make their town as green and eco-friendly as possible. Before their quest began, the Green Team planned to put a lot of trees in their neighborhood. They knew this wasn't going to be easy and that it would take more than just their own work to really change things. They chose to ask for help from their friends, family, and neighbors. To start their big project, they made pamphlets and posters that stood out, came up with a catchy phrase, and even planned a celebration to plant trees. As soon as they got other people excited about making their neighborhood greener and healthier, a huge group of them joined in. Volunteers from the Green Team worked together to plant trees in parks, schools, and backyards on the weekends and after school. For them, planting a tree was a win and a small step toward their big goal. They put many kinds of trees, like fruit trees so that people and animals could eat them, maple trees for their pretty fall leaves, and oak trees because they are strong and last a long time. But they did more than just plant trees as part of their work. Along with holding recycling seminars and telling people to use less plastic, the group also gave tips on how to save energy and water. Things began to change in their town. More plants grew in public parks, empty lots were turned into bright community gardens, and streets with new trees added beauty and shade. People in the town started to feel good about their part in making the world healthier after they saw the change. People all over the world started working together to protect the earth because of the Green Team's idea. The Green Team's three main members—Theo, Maya, and Jake—were ecstatic when they won. They began with a simple idea, but by working together and not giving up, they were able to make things better. Their city was on its way to becoming the greenest in history, showing what can happen when people work together to reach a goal. The Green Team wasn't even close to finishing their mission, but they had already shown that when a lot of people work together, small things like planting one tree can have big effects.

Book The Global Carbon Cycle and Climate Change

Download or read book The Global Carbon Cycle and Climate Change written by David E. Reichle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Carbon Cycle and Climate Change examines the global carbon cycle and the energy balance of the biosphere, following carbon and energy through increasingly complex levels of metabolism from cells to ecosystems. Utilizing scientific explanations, analyses of ecosystem functions, extensive references, and cutting-edge examples of energy flow in ecosystems, it is an essential resource to aid in understanding the scientific basis of the role played by ecological systems in climate change. This book addresses the need to understand the global carbon cycle and the interrelationships among the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics in a holistic perspective. The Global Carbon Cycle and Climate Change is a compendium of easily accessible, technical information that provides a clear understanding of energy flow, ecosystem dynamics, the biosphere, and climate change. "Dr. Reichle brings over four decades of research on the structure and function of forest ecosystems to bear on the existential issue of our time, climate change. Using a comprehensive review of carbon biogeochemistry as scaled from the physiology of organisms to landscape processes, his analysis provides an integrated discussion of how diverse processes at varying time and spatial scales function. The work speaks to several audiences. Too often students study their courses in a vacuum without necessarily understanding the relationships that transcend from the cellular process, to organism, to biosphere levels and exist in a dynamic atmosphere with its own processes, and spatial dimensions. This book provides the template whereupon students can be guided to see how the pieces fit together. The book is self-contained but lends itself to be amplified upon by a student or professor. The same intellectual quest would also apply for the lay reader who seeks a broad understanding." --W.F. Harris - Provides clear explanations, examples, and data for understanding fossil fuel emissions affecting atmospheric CO2 levels and climate change, and the role played by ecosystems in the global cycle of energy and carbon - Presents a comprehensive, factually based synthesis of the global cycle of carbon in the biosphere and the underlying scientific bases - Includes clear illustrations of environmental processes

Book The Quest for Security

Download or read book The Quest for Security written by Joseph Stiglitz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some have suggested that the turmoil in the eurozone "proves" the deficiencies in the welfare state. This book argues that the superior performance of the Scandinavian countries arises from their superior systems of social protection, which allow their citizens to undertake greater risk and more actively participate in globalization. Others suggest that we can address terrorism or transnational crimes through the strengthening of borders or long distance wars. This book develops the proposition that such approaches have the opposite effect and that only through spreading the kind of human security experienced in well-ordered societies can these dangers be managed. This book also examines how these global changes play out not only in the relations among countries and the management of globalization but at every level of our society--

Book The Sustainable Fashion Quest

Download or read book The Sustainable Fashion Quest written by Nikolay Anguelov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When thinking about lowering or changing consumption to lower carbon footprints, the obvious offenders come easily to mind: petroleum and petroleum products, paper and plastic, even food, but not clothes. When people evaluate ways to lower their personal carbon footprint by changing purchasing habits, they are bombarded with information to avoid petroleum and petroleum products, plastics, paper, even food, but not clothes. Most consumers do not think of clothes as a source of environmental damage. Yet, clothes are made with petroleum products through chemically-laden industrial processes that generate significant pollution. The fashion industry is among the largest organic water polluters in the world, accounting for significant greenhouse gas emissions and generating massive amounts of waste as a function of the frequent discarding of used clothing. In the Dirty Side of the Garment Industry: Fast Fashion and Its Negative Impact on Environment and Society, author Nikolay Anguelov exposed the ecological damage from the fast-fashion business model. In this book, The Sustainable Fashion Quest: Innovations in Business and Policy, the author takes this one step further by focusing on solutions. This book uses the familiar (yet complex) industry of fashion as a lens to examine how business pressures and national and international policies can have both positive and negative social and ecological impacts. It provides an analysis of extant and emerging policies to address the divergence in the ongoing quest to maximize economic development and minimize the social costs of the industrialization process. It also examines emerging technologies and innovative business models that have the potential to revolutionize how fashion is perceived, manufactured, and consumed. This book begins with an introductory letter that outlines the social and environmental issues facing the fashion industry, as well as emphasizing the seriousness and urgency of addressing them. Each chapter then focuses on a major aspect of the industry with an increasing emphasis on policy. The chapters outline the impact of global-level and business-level decisions on the industry’s success, its social and environmental impact, and its relationship to consumers. The goal of the book is to define that transition, explain its challenges, and educate readers on the possibilities to become powerful drivers of change through their professional actions and their personal behavior as consumers. While the book specifically analyzes the fashion industry, it also explains the implications for other industrial sectors. It uses a product everyone is familiar with (we all buy clothes, after all) to examine the decisions, impacts, and policies shaping the industry behind the scenes. The linkages are applicable to other fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) business sectors, such as consumer electronics, which are starting to face sustainability criticism for relying on a business model of promoting a high frequency of repeat purchasing.

Book Sustainable Fossil Fuels

Download or read book Sustainable Fossil Fuels written by Mark Jaccard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more people believe we must quickly wean ourselves from fossil fuels - oil, natural gas and coal - to save the planet from environmental catastrophe, wars and economic collapse. In this 2006 book, Professor Jaccard argues that this view is misguided. We have the technological capability to use fossil fuels without emitting climate-threatening greenhouse gases or other pollutants. The transition from conventional oil and gas to their unconventional sources including coal for producing electricity, hydrogen and cleaner-burning fuels will decrease energy dependence on politically unstable regions. In addition, our vast fossil fuel resources will be the cheapest source of clean energy for the next century and perhaps longer, which is critical for the economic and social development of the world's poorer countries. By buying time for increasing energy efficiency, developing renewable energy technologies and making nuclear power more attractive, fossil fuels will play a key role in humanity's quest for a sustainable energy system.

Book Gaseous Carbon Waste Streams Utilization

Download or read book Gaseous Carbon Waste Streams Utilization written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the quest to mitigate the buildup of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, researchers and policymakers have increasingly turned their attention to techniques for capturing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, either from the locations where they are emitted or directly from the atmosphere. Once captured, these gases can be stored or put to use. While both carbon storage and carbon utilization have costs, utilization offers the opportunity to recover some of the cost and even generate economic value. While current carbon utilization projects operate at a relatively small scale, some estimates suggest the market for waste carbon-derived products could grow to hundreds of billions of dollars within a few decades, utilizing several thousand teragrams of waste carbon gases per year. Gaseous Carbon Waste Streams Utilization: Status and Research Needs assesses research and development needs relevant to understanding and improving the commercial viability of waste carbon utilization technologies and defines a research agenda to address key challenges. The report is intended to help inform decision making surrounding the development and deployment of waste carbon utilization technologies under a variety of circumstances, whether motivated by a goal to improve processes for making carbon-based products, to generate revenue, or to achieve environmental goals.

Download or read book Live Sustainably Now written by Karl Coplan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any realistic response to climate change will require reducing carbon emissions to a sustainable level. Yet even people who already recognize that the climate is the most urgent issue facing the planet struggle to understand their individual responsibilities. Is it even possible to live with a sustainable carbon footprint in modern American society—much less to live well? What are the options for those who would like to make climate awareness part of their daily lives but don’t want to go off the grid or become a hermit? In Live Sustainably Now, Karl Coplan shares his personal journey of attempting to cut back on carbon without giving up the amenities of a suburban middle-class lifestyle. Coplan chronicles the joys and challenges of a year on a carbon budget—kayaking to work, hunting down electric-car charging stations, eating a Mediterranean-style diet, and enjoying plenty of travel on weekends and vacations while avoiding long-distance flights. He explains how to set a personal carbon cap and measure your actual footprint, with his own results detailed in monthly diary entries. Presenting the pros and cons of different energy, transportation, and lifestyle options, Live Sustainably Now shows that there does not have to be a trade-off between the ethical obligation to maintain a sustainable carbon footprint and the belief that life should be fulfilling and fun. This powerful and persuasive book provides an individual-level blueprint for a carbon-sustainable tweak to the American dream.

Book How to Cool the Planet

Download or read book How to Cool the Planet written by Jeff Goodell and published by HMH. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Thoughtful, informative, and darkly entertaining. It’s the best treatment of this important (and scary) topic you can find.” —Elizabeth Kolbert Right now, a group of scientists is working on ways to minimize the catastrophic impact of global warming. But they’re not designing hybrids or fuel cells or wind turbines. They’re trying to lower the temperature of the entire planet. And they’re doing it with huge contraptions that suck CO2 from the air, machines that brighten clouds and deflect sunlight away from the earth, even artificial volcanoes that spray heat-reflecting particles into the atmosphere. This is the radical and controversial world of geoengineering, which only five years ago was considered to be “fringe.” But as Jeff Goodell points out, the economic crisis, combined with global political realities, is making these ideas look sane, even inspired. Goodell himself started out as a skeptic, concerned about tinkering with the planet’s thermostat. We can’t even predict next week’s weather, so how are we going to change the temperature of whole regions? What if a wealthy entrepreneur shoots particles into the stratosphere on his own? Who gets blamed if something goes terribly wrong? And perhaps most disturbing, what about wars waged with climate control as the primary weapon? There are certainly risks, but Goodell believes the alternatives could be worse. In the end, he persuades us that geoengineering may just be our last best hope—a Plan B for the environment. His compelling tale of scientific hubris and technical daring is sure to jump-start the next big debate about the future of life on earth. “Goodell explores with infectious curiosity and thoughtful narration this strange, promising, and untested suite of climate fixes.” —BusinessWeek “A quick, enjoyable read through a complex, timely topic. And after you read it, you’ll never look at the sky or the ocean—or Earth, really—in quite the same way again.” —The Christian Science Monitor
