Book The Trees Called igru Moringa Sp Along with a Study of the Drugs Used in Errhines

Download or read book The Trees Called igru Moringa Sp Along with a Study of the Drugs Used in Errhines written by Jan Meulenbeld and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2009 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the Ayurvedic materia medica, in particular its drugs of plant origin, is a venture bristling with pitfalls despite the apparent confidence displayed in the lists of botanical identifications of medicinal plants in numerous publications on the subject. This self-assurance is unwarranted in quite a few cases, as this study will demonstrate. The majority of these lists of botanical equivalents of Sanskrit plant names are not based on own research; instead, they usually reflect a consensus reached somehow among Indian ayurvedic scholars. The course of events that resulted in this agreement remains uninvestigated. Setting aside the role of leading authorities and trend-setting publications, one of the factors involved may be the significance of a seemingly trustworthy and scientifically-looking pharmacopoeia for the Indian ayurvedici in their competition with western medicine. In this respect the developments referred to are understandable. From a strictly scientific point of view caution is required. When trying to take stock of the situation, one's attention is arrested by the prevalence of North-Indian influences and opinions in the secondary literature on the Indian materia medica. The concurrence mentioned is a North-Indian product that may be looked upon as an artefact since regional differences in the identifications tend to be disregarded. Though exceptions do occur, most often books by authors hailing from northern India fail to pay attention to the plants employed under the same Sanskrit names in southern India and areas such as, for instance, Gujarat and Orissa.

Download or read book Well Mannered Medicine written by Dagmar Wujastyk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-Mannered Medicine explores the moral discourses on the practice of medicine in the foundational texts of Ayurveda. The classical ayurvedic treatises were composed in Sanskrit between the first and the seventh centuries CE, and later works, dating into the sixteenth century CE, are still considered strongly authoritative. As Wujastyk shows, these works testify to an elaborate system of medical ethics and etiquette. Physicians looked to the ayurvedic treatises for a guide to professional conduct. Ayurvedic discourses on good medical practice depict the physician as highly-educated, skilled, moral, and well-mannered. The rules of conduct positioned physicians within mainstream society and characterized medical practice as a trustworthy and socially acceptable profession. At the same time, professional success was largely based on a particular physician's ability to cure his patients. This resulted in tension, as some treatments and medications were considered socially or religiously unacceptable. Doctors needed to treat their patients successfully while ostensibly following the rules of acceptable behavior. Wujastyk offers insight into the many unorthodox methods of avoiding conflict while ensuring patient compliance shown in the ayurvedic treatises, giving a disarmingly candid perspective on the realities of medical practice and its crucial role in a profoundly well-mannered society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian science of Ayurveda, or "life knowledge" has been practiced unbrokenfor thousands of years, handed down from teacher to student. Ayurveda provides themethod for living a balanced life, for the prevention of disease and pain and for thetreatment of diseases presently thought to be incurable. Unfortunately, during the periodof British occupation of India, traditional arts, including the science of Ayurveda, wereactively discouraged; 'Vaidyas', or accomplished Ayurvedic masters, were persecutedand numerous libraries and schools were burned to the ground. Since that time of foreignoccupation, India and it's culture have slowly been recovering. But the truth is thatAyurveda still remains in a semi-dormant state, a state of hibernation, waiting for thoseearnest and perseverant students who will bring Ayurveda back to it's full capacity.Fortunately there are a few excellent texts which have been preserved from ancient times. The Charaka Samhita is such a text. Recorded several thousand years ago from theteachings of the sage Punarvasu Atreya, it is a gem of practical wisdom which remains tothis day the most respected work on Ayurveda
