Excerpt: ...with his old smile, ought to show that, notwithstanding the evils Fate had dealt him, he had 'no bad feeling'--a little row of buildings on Parker's Piece, an airy space enough to look upon, but dangerous as a pleasure-ground by reason of the missiles (ranging from a football to the small shot used at rounders) always flying about. It was a very tiny dwelling; the door opened upon a passage so narrow that the term seemed a misnomer, since no adultscould pass one another in it; when a visitor called, the, maid had to back to admit him, unless (which, of course, was not to be thought of) she lay down and let him walk over her, like the stag on the precipice in Mr. Browning's poem. Though little furniture had been reserved from the sale at 'The Laurels, ' it was more than sufficient for the new tenement, and was, of necessity, much too large for it. As compared with their present surroundings, the old bookcases and tables were too tall; the Canon used cheerfully to call attention to them as indicating their flood-tide of prosperity, the old highwater mark; and, indeed, a place where the tide is out is no bad metaphor for a household that has seen better days, except, alas! that in the latter case it seldom comes in again. That the dining-room should be so diminutive was of small consequence, since the hospitality that had been exercised at ' The Laurels ' was no longer possible; but that the room behind, which was the Canon's study and smokingroom, should be such a nutshell, was deplorable. The accommodation for literature provideC ibr the ordinary inhabitant of Providence Terrace was one shelf below stairs, supplemented by a bookslide in the drawing-room; so that the Canon's numerous tomes had to be piled against the wall, while one...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canon's Ward, Vol. 1 of 3 What 'the High' is to Oxford men, picturesque, unique, unapproachable, 'the Backs' - the river gardens at the backs of their colleges - are to Cambridge men. There is beauty all along the river from St. John's to Corpus; 'linked sweetness' - for do not the bridges join the gardens? - 'long drawn out.' It may be a personal partiality, but I venture to think that immediately in front of Trinity College the beauty of 'the Backs' culminates. Book The Graphic Canon Vol 1

Download or read book The Graphic Canon Vol 1 written by Russ Kick and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GRAPHIC CANON (Seven Stories Press) is a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind trilogy that brings classic literatures of the world together with legendary graphic artists and illustrators. There are more than 130 illustrators represented and 190 literary works over three volumes—many newly commissioned, some hard to find—reinterpreted here for readers and collectors of all ages. Volume 1 takes us on a visual tour from the earliest literature through the end of the 1700s. Along the way, we're treated to eye-popping renditions of the human race's greatest epics: Gilgamesh, The Iliad, The Odyssey (in watercolors by Gareth Hinds), The Aeneid, Beowulf, and The Arabian Nights, plus later epics The Divine Comedy and The Canterbury Tales (both by legendary illustrator and graphic designer Seymour Chwast), Paradise Lost, and Le Morte D'Arthur. Two of ancient Greece's greatest plays are adapted—the tragedy Medea by Euripides and Tania Schrag’s uninhibited rendering of the very bawdy comedy Lysistrata by Aristophanes (the text of which is still censored in many textbooks). Also included is Robert Crumb’s rarely-seen adaptation of James Boswell’s London Journal, filled with philosophical debate and lowbrow debauchery. Religious literature is well-covered and well-illustrated, with the Books of Daniel and Esther from the Old Testament, Rick Geary’s awe-inspiring new rendition of the Book of Revelation from the New Testament, the Tao te Ching, Rumi’s Sufi poetry, Hinduism’s Mahabharata, and the Mayan holy book Popol Vuh, illustrated by Roberta Gregory. The Eastern canon gets its due, with The Tale of Genji (the world’s first novel, done in full-page illustrations reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley), three poems from China’s golden age of literature lovingly drawn by pioneering underground comics artist Sharon Rudahl, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, a Japanese Noh play, and other works from Asia. Two of Shakespeare’s greatest plays (King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and two of his sonnets are here, as are Plato’s Symposium, Gulliver’s Travels, Candide, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Renaissance poetry of love and desire, and Don Quixote visualized by the legendary Will Eisner. Some unexpected twists in this volume include a Native American folktale, an Incan play, Sappho’s poetic fragments, bawdy essays by Benjamin Franklin, the love letters of Abelard and Heloise, and the decadent French classic Dangerous Liaisons, as illustrated by Molly Crabapple. Edited by Russ Kick, The Graphic Canon is an extraordinary collection that will continue with Volume 2: "Kubla Khan" to the Bronte Sisters to The Picture of Dorian Gray in Summer 2012, and Volume 3: From Heart of Darkness to Hemingway to Infinite Jest in Fall 2012. A boxed set of all three volumes will also be published in Fall 2012.

Book The Loop

Download or read book The Loop written by Jacob Ward and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eye-opening narrative journey into the rapidly changing world of artificial intelligence reveals the dangerous ways AI is exploiting the unconscious habits of our minds, and the real threat it poses to humanity: "The best book I have ever read about AI" (New York Times bestselling author Roger McNamee). Artificial intelligence is going to change the world as we know it. But the real danger isn't some robot that's going to enslave us: It's our own brain. Our brains are constantly making decisions using shortcuts, biases, and hidden processes—and we're using those same techniques to create technology that makes choices for us. In The Loop, award-winning science journalist Jacob Ward reveals how we are poised to build all of our worst instincts into our AIs, creating a narrow loop where each generation has fewer, predetermined, and even dangerous choices. Taking us on a world tour of the ongoing, real-world experiment of artificial intelligence, The Loop illuminates the dangers of writing dangerous human habits into our machines. From a biometric surveillance state in India that tracks the movements of over a billion people, to a social media control system in China that punishes deviant friendships, to the risky multiple-choice simplicity of automated military action, Ward travels the world speaking with top experts confronting the perils of their research. Each stop reveals how the most obvious patterns in our behavior—patterns an algorithm will use to make decisions about what's best for us—are not the ones we want to perpetuate. Just as politics, marketing, and finance have all exploited the weaknesses of our human programming, artificial intelligence is poised to use the patterns of our lives to manipulate us. The Loop is call to look at ourselves more clearly—our most creative ideas, our most destructive impulses, the ways we help and hurt one another-so we can put only the best parts of ourselves into the thinking machines we create.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Social Theory Volume 1 A Contested Canon

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Social Theory Volume 1 A Contested Canon written by Peter Kivisto and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 1058 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious two-volume handbook of social theory consists of forty original contributions. The researchers take stock of the state of social theory and its relationship to the canon, exploring such topics as the nature, purpose, and meaning of social theory; the significance of the classics; the impact of specific individual and theory schools; and more. Both volumes reflect a mixture of what intellectual historian Morton White distinguished as the 'annalist of ideas' and the 'analyst of ideas,' locating theoretical thought within the larger socio-historical context that shaped it - within the terrain of the sociology of knowledge. Exploring the contemporary relevance of theories in a manner that is historically situated and sensitive, this impressive and comprehensive set will likely stand the test of time.

Book Justification Volume 1

  • Author : Michael Horton
  • Publisher : Zondervan Academic
  • Release : 2018-11-27
  • ISBN : 0310491622

Download or read book Justification Volume 1 written by Michael Horton and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of a two-volume project delving into the doctrine of justification. Michael Horton seeks not simply to recover a clear message of its role in modern Reformed theology, but also to bring a fresh discovery of the gospel in a time when contemporary debates around justification have reignited. The doctrine of justification stands at the center of our systematic reflection on the meaning of salvation and grace as well as our piety, mission, and life together. And yet, within mainline Protestant and evangelical theology, it's often taken for granted or left to gather dust in favor of modern concerns and self-renewal. Volume 1 is an exercise in historical theology, exploring the doctrine of justification from the patristic era to the Reformation. This book: Provides a map for contemporary discussions of justification, identifying and engaging principal sources: Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, Gabriel Biel, and the magisterial reformers. Studies the transformations of the doctrine through Aquinas, Scotus and the nominalists leading up to the era of the Reformation and the Council of Trent. Concludes by examining the hermeneutical and theological significance of the Reformers' understanding of the law and the gospel and the resultant covenantal scheme that became formative in Reformed theology. Engaging and thorough, Justification will not only reenergize the reader—whether Protestant or Catholic—with a passion for understanding this essential and long-running doctrinal conversation, but also challenge anyone to engage critically with the history of the Church and the heart of the gospel.
