Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Magazine of Politics, Science, Art and Literature, Vol. 51: May 1918 to October 1918 Inclusive I knew at once that it was not a camp-meeting, for there was no sug gestion of the fervour and solemnity which distinguished such events. There was occasional laughter and cheering, but I thought that some of those who listened did not like the behaviour of their neighbours. I was interested in the statement of the speaker that wherever he had gone throughout the county he found that someone else had been there, and that many calves and steers had been bought at very high figures. Who was this mysterious person? Why should he buy calves and steers? Why should be pay such high prices? Finally the speaker sat down to much clapping and cheering. Another man arose, and there was even more cheering. As he spoke it was remarkable that he agreed with nothing that the first speaker had said, while those who had been silent now became happy and demonstrative. But the light was breaking. I recalled many a fireside controversy, and almost instinctively I. Knew what game they were playing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Magazine of Politics, Science, Art and Literature, Vol. 49: May, 1917, to October, 1917, Inclusive I have elaborated on what might be considered merely an introduction, because nothing done by the women of England can be considered by a Canadian in the light of Canadian experience alone. This description of conditions pre cluding complete participation by the English woman in the war work open to her frees me for a general state ment without prejudice, omitting for the moment consideration of her handicaps. I am prepared to say that not all the better class women of England have done in the aggregate what a tenth their number of Can adian women would have accomplish ed in the same time. They have not taken to knitting for several reasons. Those who are keenly anxious to do effective war work without delay have not the patience to learn; and those who have but yielded to the prevail ing fashion do not, see in quiet knit ting that which will return them full credit for their energy. Also, there are still those in whose mind con tinnes the almost unsuspected impres sion that knitting is for a lower class. In a whole year I have seen only one English woman knitting. It is the women of the lower classes who have responded in a manner that calls for no qualifications, no condi tions, and not alone for the high wages their work now brings them. Yet the north has a strange fascin ation for many men. They grow to like the loneliness, the savagery of it however much they may curse it, yet they are restless until they get back to it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Magazine of Politics, Science, Art and Literature, Vol. 21: May, 1903, to October, 1903, Inclusive The great charm of Shanghai lies in the constant sudden transition from Europe to China and back again. From the narrow, picturesque shopping streets, with curious signs and carvings of quaint device, and their men and women in costumes of varied hue, it is but a step or two and you are in England, France or America, as the case may be. Each has her Colony, and in each the customs of the country are distinctly apparent. England and things English, however, have the predominance. My first impressions of Shanghai were obtained, as those of most people, from the comfortable scat of a locally built carriage. The hire of a smart victoria, a rubber-tired brougham, two ponies - to allow of frequent changing - two "mafoos" in flowing gaily-trimmed gowns and capes, red-tasselled headgear and streaming pigtails, amounts to only thirty dollars per month. The natural consequence is that Europeans seldom walk. Driving on Bubbling Well Road in the afternoon, especially on Hunt days, and seeing the great number of well-dressed women, handsome men and fine horses, it is difficult to believe oneself out of England. The connecting link, about a mile long, between the fashionable Bubbling Well Road and the Bund or river front, is Nankin Road, or, as it is generally called, the "Maloo." This is lined most of the distance with native shops which gradually give place to some very handsome European ones, ending at Shanghai's greatest glory, her Bund. Handsome clubs, banks, hongs and residences embellish one side, whilst between it and the river lies a beautiful stretch of green sward and shade trees.
