Book The Camel in the Forest

Download or read book The Camel in the Forest written by A. E. Hayoun and published by Negev Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her spirited memoir, A. E. Hayoun paints an eye-opening portrait of immigrating to Israel and building a new life in Israel’s beautiful, controversial, and sometimes hostile Negev desert. At once a vulnerable narrative of personal experience, The Camel in the Forest is also a remarkable, brief history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Camel in the Forest is A. E. Hayoun’s first-hand account of life in Israel that takes place a few years before and during Operation Guardian of the Walls; the 12-day war that came as the result of terrorist groups Hamas and the Islamic Jihad breaking the permanent ceasefire between Israel and Gaza in 2021. In a lyrical voice that weaves together authentic experience, historical narrative, and the colorful tapestry of Jewish expression, this courageous collection of true stories brings to life the Jewish homeland of rich history, complex politics, and intricate relationships between cultures that are an unavoidable part of everyday life in Israel and the Middle East. In the style of Yehuda Amichai and the spirit of Noa Tishby, The Camel in the Forest is inspired by ancient Judaic texts, the unique beauty of the Negev desert, and the reality of war that plagues Israeli society. The Camel in the Forest speaks in the voice of a new generation of Israelis and will forever change your understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests Are Gold examines the management of Vietnam's forests in the tumultuous twentieth century—from French colonialism to the recent transition to market-oriented economics—as the country united, prospered, and transformed people and landscapes. Forest policy has rarely been about ecology or conservation for nature’s sake, but about managing citizens and society, a process Pamela McElwee terms “environmental rule.” Untangling and understanding these practices and networks of rule illuminates not just thorny issues of environmental change, but also the birth of Vietnam itself.

Book Advancing Earth Surface Representation via Enhanced Use of Earth Observations in Monitoring and Forecasting Applications

Download or read book Advancing Earth Surface Representation via Enhanced Use of Earth Observations in Monitoring and Forecasting Applications written by Gianpaolo Balsamo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representation of the Earth's surface in global monitoring and forecasting applications is moving towards capturing more of the relevant processes, while maintaining elevated computational efficiency and therefore a moderate complexity. These schemes are developed and continuously improved thanks to well instrumented field-sites that can observe coupled processes occurring at the surface–atmosphere interface (e.g., forest, grassland, cropland areas and diverse climate zones). Approaching global kilometer-scale resolutions, in situ observations alone cannot fulfil the modelling needs, and the use of satellite observation becomes essential to guide modelling innovation and to calibrate and validate new parameterization schemes that can support data assimilation applications. In this book, we review some of the recent contributions, highlighting how satellite data are used to inform Earth surface model development (vegetation state and seasonality, soil moisture conditions, surface temperature and turbulent fluxes, land-use change detection, agricultural indicators and irrigation) when moving towards global km-scale resolutions.

Book The Desert Vet

Download or read book The Desert Vet written by Alex Tinson and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I am at home with camels. Where others see a dirty, filthy, smelling, kicking beast, I see a thing of pure anatomical beauty, an intelligent and graceful creature...Because of camels I have built a life I never imagined possible. And all this happened because I decided to say yes to adventure whenever it came my way.' When Sydney-born vet Alex Tinson was literally plucked from the Australian outback to become chief vet in charge of the United Arab Emirates President's racing camels, he was given one mission: to make the President's camels the best in the UAE and, indeed, all of Arabia. Thirty years later he is still there, having become the world's leading camel vet while caring for a menagerie of unusual animals along the way. But this is more than a story about camels and monkeys, spiders and snakes, and all sorts of other exotic creatures. It is also about crossing boundaries of race and religion to create a life full of possibility, of being introduced to the reclusive world of the Gulf Royal families and of sharing the rich lives of Alex's Bedouin family and friends. Warm and generous, intriguing and compelling, The Desert Vet takes us to a place few have entered before.
