Book The Calvinistic Methodist Fathers of Wales

Download or read book The Calvinistic Methodist Fathers of Wales written by John Morgan Jones and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the French novelist Anatole France who, when feeling tired, and discouraged, said, 'I never go into the country for a change of air and a holiday. I always go instead into the eighteenth century.' For an entirely different purpose, the great Welsh preacher, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, frequently borrowed France's words when speaking to his fellow Gospel preachers: 'Go to the eighteenth century! In other words read the stories of the great tides and movements of the Spirit experienced in that century. It is the most exhilarating experience, the finest tonic you will ever know. For a preacher it is absolutely invaluable ... There is nothing more important for preaching than the reading of Church history and biographies.' His own biographer, Iain Murray, says that for 'sheer stimulus and enjoyment there were no volumes which he prized more than Tadau Methodistaidd... the lives of the fathers of Welsh Calvinistic Methodism. They were constantly in his hands.' Book jacket.

Book The Emergence of Pentecostalism in Wales

Download or read book The Emergence of Pentecostalism in Wales written by Chris Palmer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Pentecostalism is linked to the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles through T. B. Barratt and Anglican vicar Alexander A. Boddy at Sunderland. Boddy’s experience and subsequent ministry set the foundation in Britain for the rise of the Apostolic Church, the Elim Church and the Assemblies of God. Each of these Pentecostal denominations had their roots in Wales. Following the Welsh Revival of 1904–05 some (enthused by their experience) sought a deeper relationship with God; and this search ultimately led them to Pentecostalism. A group of eager believers emerged around the town of Crosskeys in South East Wales. By 1912 they had established the Crosskeys Full Gospel Mission, which soon became a centre for Pentecostal activity. The central role of the Crosskeys group is seen in the development of the Assemblies of God in Wales and Monmouthshire denomination which was in existence by 1921. The Crosskeys based group had been in correspondence with the American Assemblies of God (AG) regarding joining that denomination as an official presbytery. It was this action that caused a group of like-minded English Pentecostals to pursue the establishment of the Assemblies of God in Great Britain and Ireland in 1924. This British denomination incorporated some thirty-eight Welsh Pentecostal assemblies. This book considers some of the important theological, political and social influences which shaped the brand of Pentecostalism that emerged in South East Wales in the early twentieth century—a movement which was to have a wide ranging influence on subsequent Pentecostal history far beyond the borders of Wales.

Book The Doctrines of Grace in an Unexpected Place

Download or read book The Doctrines of Grace in an Unexpected Place written by Mark R. Stevenson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God sovereignly elect some individuals for salvation while passing others by? Do human beings possess free will to embrace or reject the gospel? Did Christ die equally for all people or only for some? These questions have long been debated in the history of the Christian church. Answers typically fall into one of two main categories, popularly known as Calvinism and Arminianism. The focus of this book is to establish how one nineteenth-century evangelical group, the Brethren, responded to these and other related questions. The Brethren produced a number of colorful leaders whose influence was felt throughout the evangelical world. Although many critics have assumed the movement's theology was Arminian, this book argues that the Brethren, with few exceptions, advocated Calvinistic positions. Yet there were some twists along the way! The movement's radical biblicism, passionate evangelism, and strong aversion to systematic theology and creeds meant they refused to label themselves as Calvinists even though they affirmed Calvinism's soteriological principles--the so-called doctrines of grace.
