Book The California Vegetables in Garden and Field

Download or read book The California Vegetables in Garden and Field written by Edward James Wickson and published by . This book was released on 1913 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of the work is to give the newcomer, or old-resident beginner, an understanding of the peculiar conditions which he encounters in California and descriptions of gardening practices which attain most satisfactory results under those conditions. Experienced gardeners from other states and countries soon find that their accustomed procedure fails of its wonted results; that the old times and ways of doing things are unsuitable, and that new rules of practice must be learned. Often those who have had no earlier gardening experience seek a rural home in California and burn with a desire to possess the delights of a home garden. They soon find that following the advice to beginners given in books written for other climates, yields little but disappointment. Conditions of soil and climate in California are varied to the last degree, and practice must vary with them."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Vegetables in Garden and Field: A Manual of Practice, With and Without Irrigation, for Semitropical Countries In view of the very appreciative reception which the public accorded to the first edition of this work and the urgent demand for its reappearance, it is deeply regretted by the writer that the present edition lias been so long delayed. It seemed, however, unavoidable. The revision necessary to include later results of experience and observation and extension to fitly include the advancement of certain vegetables in commercial volume and importance and the methods of handling them, largely developed by local study and experiment, have required much attention. In fact, the revision of the work has required a repetition of the same effort which was invoked in its initial preparation, and for which the following claim was made in the preface to the First Edition : "There arc very good reasons why the task of preparing such a book has been so long delayed. The subject is appalling in its intricacy. Conditions of soil and climate in California are varied to the last degree, and practice must vary with them. Xo matter how skilful and successful a man may be in his particular locality, bis experience can only be a safe guide to those who happen to work under similar conditions. For this reason, though there have been admirable local writers ou garden practice from the beginning, their writings, no matter how diligently collected and bow well printed, would not constitute a suggestive treatise unless the enquirer should analyze the local conditions and practice and translate them into terms of wide applicability. To do this it is necessary that the principles underlying the successful practice should be discerned and the significance of conditions be interpreted. This task could only be discharged by one who has had opportunity for wide collection of data, and for extended personal observation as well, and one fur whom labor would be continually lightened by enthusiastic delight in the subject itself. Book Captive of the Labyrinth

Download or read book Captive of the Labyrinth written by Mary Jo Ignoffo and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captive of the Labyrinth is reissued here to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of rifle heiress Sarah L. Winchester in 1922. After inheriting a vast fortune upon the death of her husband in 1881, Winchester purchased a simple farmhouse in San José, California. She built additions to the house and continued construction for the next twenty years. When neighbors and the local press could not imagine her motivations, they invented fanciful ones of their own. She was accused of being a ghost-obsessed spiritualist, and to this day it is largely believed that the extensive construction she executed on her San José house was done to thwart death and appease the spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle. Author and historian Mary Jo Ignoffo’s definitive biography unearths the truth about this reclusive eccentric, revealing that she was not a maddened spiritualist driven by remorse but an intelligent, articulate woman who sought to protect her private life amidst the chaos of her public existence and the social mores of the time. The author takes readers through Winchester’s several homes, explores her private life, and, by excerpting from personal correspondence, one learns the widow’s true priority was not dissipating her fortune on the mansion in San José but endowing a hospital to eradicate a dread disease. Sarah Winchester has been exploited for profit for over a century, but Captive of the Labyrinth finally puts to rest the myths about this American heiress, and, in the process, uncovers her true legacies.
