Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Horticulturist and Floral Magazine, Vol. 2: 1871-1872 Petunias are cultivated as bedding plants, and produce much better effect in masses than if planted out singly. With us they flower the whole year round. The flowers of the Petunia are either double or Single, and, although the double ones are rarer and generally higher-priced, the single ones are far richer in color, and for planting in masses are far more effective. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Horticulturist and Floral Magazine, 1876, Vol. 6 The horticulturist has often reason to be interested, if not anxious, about the state Of the weather. The florist es pecially dislikes either too much rain or too long a drought. The health and good condition Of plants depend much upon the state of the weather and at mosphere. The meteorological 'condi tions of California are quite peculiar as compared with the rest of the States and Territories. The near vicinity of a vast ocean, with several mountain tiers running up and down at different dis tances on our slope, exercise the great est influence On our climate. We may describe the clouds generally which visit us, as well as other portions of the globe, as visible vapor suspended iii the air at some distance from the level parts of the earth. Possessing the shifting, formless, shadowy character of vapor, becoming visible or remaining invisible, according to minute changes of temperature in different parts of the Sky, they combine outlines with pecul iar striking colors and other character istics, with a capacity for change that is almost unlimited. Book Building San Francisco s Parks 1850 1930

Download or read book Building San Francisco s Parks 1850 1930 written by Terence Young and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-02-16 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865, when San Francisco's Daily Evening Bulletin asked its readers if it were not time for the city to finally establish a public park, residents had only private gardens and small urban squares where they could retreat from urban crowding, noise, and filth. Five short years later, city supervisors approved the creation of Golden Gate Park, the second largest urban park in America. Over the next sixty years, and particularly after 1900, a network of smaller parks and parkways was built, turning San Francisco into one of the nation's greenest cities. In Building San Francisco's Parks, 1850-1930, Terence Young traces the history of San Francisco's park system, from the earliest city plans, which made no provision for a public park, through the private garden movement of the 1850s and 1860, Frederick Law Olmsted's early involvement in developing a comprehensive parks plan, the design and construction of Golden Gate Park, and finally to the expansion of green space in the first third of the twentieth century. Young documents this history in terms of the four social ideals that guided America's urban park advocates and planners in this period: public health, prosperity, social coherence, and democratic equality. He also differentiates between two periods in the history of American park building, each defined by a distinctive attitude towards "improving" nature: the romantic approach, which prevailed from the 1860s to the 1880s, emphasized the beauty of nature, while the rationalistic approach, dominant from the 1880s to the 1920s, saw nature as the best setting for uplifting activities such as athletics and education. Building San Francisco's Parks, 1850-1930 maps the political, cultural, and social dimensions of landscape design in urban America and offers new insights into the transformation of San Francisco's physical environment and quality of life through its world-famous park system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The San Francisco Bay Area boasts one of the richest and most continuous traditions of landscape art in the entire country. Looking back over the past one hundred years, the contributors to this in-depth survey consider the diverse range of artists who have been influenced by the region's compelling union of water and land, peaks and valleys, and fog and sunlight. Paintings, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, landscape architecture, earthworks, conceptual art, and designs in city planning and architecture are all represented. The diversity reflects not just the glories of nature but also an exploration of what constitutes "landscape" in its broadest, most complete sense. Among the more than two hundred works of art are those by well-known artists and designers such as Bernard Maybeck, Diego Rivera, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown, Lawrence Halprin, and Christo. Lesser-known artists are here as well, resulting in an exceptional array of approaches to the natural environment. The essays also explore key themes in the Bay Area's landscape art tradition, including the ethnic perspectives that have played an essential role in the region's art. The inexhaustible ability of the land to stimulate different personal meanings is made clear in this volume, and the effect yields a deeper understanding of how art can shape our lives in ways both spiritual and practical, how the landscape without constantly merges with the landscape within. Published in association with The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The San Francisco Bay Area boasts one of the richest and most continuous traditions of landscape art in the entire country.
