Book excerpt: The sky darkened, black and oily; swirling, turbulent, impregnated with vigilance. It was not a bad turn of the weather promising rain or storm or tornado. It was keenly alive. Silent, yet ever moving, ever alert for what was commonplace in those dark and dangerous days. Always with its ravenous eye upon death. When the buzzards took flight, Levi Hobbs knew his family's only hope of survival was to escape. They were coming, the Biters, the dead, risen as zombies, infested by parasites and transformed into shambling, ravenous monsters. As the family flees their home in the Smoky Mountains, they head eastward to the Carolinas in search of refuge. As the buzzards on their trail grow thicker, the Zone widens, and the Biters become hungrier and more hostile. The Hobbs family realizes there is only one place left to go, one place to make a final stand... and time is running out.

Book Geology Geochemistry and Mineral Resource Assessment of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and Adjacent Roadless Areas Rabun and Towns Counties Georgia and Clay and Macon Counties North Carolina

Download or read book Geology Geochemistry and Mineral Resource Assessment of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and Adjacent Roadless Areas Rabun and Towns Counties Georgia and Clay and Macon Counties North Carolina written by John D. Peper and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Nantahala Wilderness and the Buzzard Knob and Southern Nantahala Roadless Areas are near one another and near the North Carolina-Georgia State line in Rabun and Towns Counties, Ga., and Clay and Macon Counties, N.C. The areas collectively span a region of polydeformed and metamorphosed rocks assigned to three major thrust sheets, from east to west the Tallulah Falls, Helen, and Richard Russell thrust sheets. Outcrop patterns and minor structures in the older sillimanite- grade Richard Russell rocks in the western part of the study area outline an earlier phase of isoclinal folding not apparent in the outcrop pattern of younger kyanite- and staurolite-grade Coweeta Group rocks immediately to the east across the Shope Fork fault in the east-central parts of the study area. Major movement on the Shope Fork fault postdates isoclinal F1 folding but preceded F2 isoclinal folding, because F1 fold traces are covered by rocks above the fault and the fault is folded by F2 folds. Later shearing along the fault occurred during F3 cross-folding. Geologic considerations and geochemical sampling and analysis suggest low potential for all mineral resources except common building stone. The potential for some other nonmetallic resources, including corundum, feldspar, sheet mica, and vermiculite, is moderate to low. These are present in limited amounts but are currently of little economic value. The small deposits of soapstone present in the areas are too impure to be considered a resource. Late Archaic-Early Woodland Indian bowl-carving sites in soapstone are an archeological heritage that might deserve conservation. Oil and gas resource potential is unknown but believed to be small. Resource potential for gold is low; for massive sulfide deposits containing some copper and zinc, it is low to moderate. There is little to no resource potential for other metals.

Book Burnt Magnolia

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 419 pages

Download or read book Burnt Magnolia written by Ronald Kelly and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young girl, Laura Locke ignored the warnings of local superstition and played among the burnt-out ruins of Magnolia; a Tennessee plantation that had been forcibly occupied by the Union Army and then laid to waste during the bloody Battle of Franklin in 1864. She had always thought the ghost stories and tall tales to be untrue… until the night when she witnessed it for herself. High among the blackened columns of the old mansion, upon a balcony with no floor, stood the forlorn specter of Jessica Heller. Rather than fright or horror, Laura had felt empathy for the lost soul, along with a strange kinship. She told herself, then and there, that she would someday own the old house and discover the truth concerning the violent scourge of Magnolia and what had truly become of its lonesome mistress, who had mysteriously vanished without a trace. Years later, as a bestselling author of steamy romance novels, Laura’s dream of owning the deserted plantation became a reality. After much construction and remodeling, the old mansion was every bit as majestic as it had been during the prosperous years of the Old South before the devastation of the Civil War. She thought life for her and her husband, Rick, would be peaceful and idyllic. But then strange and disturbing occurrences began to take place. A weeping woman in the garden. A haggard man digging feverishly by the light of a coal oil lantern. The horrifying shadow of a man hanging from the limb of an ancient oak tree. And, worst of all, a malevolent and destructive poltergeist that seemed particularly resentful of her husband’s presence. When a world-renowned ghost hunter, a man in search of his ancestral heritage, and two local historians arrive at Magnolia, Laura hopes that the terror that stalks Magnolia will finally be put to rest. Instead, things begin to spiral out of control, leading toward a violent and bloody confrontation that somehow mirrors the deadly events that took place there over a century before.

Book excerpt: He’s back! That was the first thought that crossed Cindy Biggs’ mind when she heard of the brutal triple-murder in her hometown of Coleman. Yes, the awful crime was nearly identical to the one performed during her hard-scrabble childhood at the time of the Great Depression. And, strangely enough, it had taken place in the same place… the ruins of the old tobacco barn near the edge of Green Creek. But this was 2014, not 1936. Cindy was no longer an innocent nine-year-old child, but an elderly woman who used her gift of second sight to assist the police every now and then. And the man who been mostly responsible for that mass killing in ’36, Bully Hanson, had been dead and in the grave for seventy-seven long years. Still she could not shake the overpowering feeling that he was involved in the massacre of three people and that the thirteen year old boy suspected of committing the murders was completely innocent. The only way she could be certain that her suspicions were more due to intuition than senility was to return to Bedloe County. And, with the help of her granddaughter Beth, revisit the most devastating period of her life… and hope that, somehow, someway, the most evil man she had ever known had not slipped the bonds of death and come back to wreak havoc once again…
