Book excerpt: Written by a senior executive, with experience as both a CFO and CEO in a wide range of organizations, including private firms, public companies and not-for-profits, The Business Zoo uses stories to illustrate important business and life concepts and provides key lessons learned from years of experience. These, both fun and informative, tales will help both people recently entering the working world or those with more experience and who are moving up. Content-wise this book is also about organizations and what makes them function, at times, well and ,at other times, makes them dysfunctional. It covers the overall critical areas of management from selling to systems, from boards to human resources. Along the way, you will also learn some critical personal skills that range from developing your moral compass, to mastering business dining, to dealing with management fraud and how to handle outside advisors be they lawyers, bankers or consultants. The book also explains the major events that impact and change all organizations such as international growth, planning, mergers and crisis management. Many chapters compare and contrast how smaller private firms and larger public companies deal with the same issues, using real life stories to help the reader relate. The book ends with the all-encompassing topic of leadership and culture, which either grow or destroy individuals and their organizations in a dog-eat-dog way. Along the way, various animals or creatures like wizards are used to help explain things. So take a read and maybe learn something about business and life through The Business Zoo!

Book excerpt: A fast-paced and exciting read for middle grade fantasy, mystery, and animal buffs. Something strange is happening at the Clarksville City Zoo. Late at night, monkeys are scaling the walls and searching the neighborhood—but what are they looking for? Noah, his sister Megan, and their best friends, Richie and Ella, live next door to the zoo. Megan is the first to notice the puzzling behavior of some of the animals. One day Megan disappears, and her brother and their friends realize it's up to them to find her. Their only choice is to follow a series of clues and sneak into the zoo. But once inside, they discover there's much more to the Clarksville City Zoo than they could ever have guessed... The author originally had the idea for The Secret Zoo when he was nine and wondered what would happen if zoo exhibits had secret doors that allowed kids to go inside—and the animals to come outside. He brings that sense of adventure and excitement to this story, making it a favorite for home and classroom reading along with such middle grade fantasy favorites as The One and Only Ivan.

Book Beyond the Workplace Zoo

Download or read book Beyond the Workplace Zoo written by Nigel Oseland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins by outlining the common design mistakes with the modern open plan office and the industry focus on cost that has resulted in the ill-fated Workplace Zoo. The requirements of office-based workers according to psychological theory and research are then explained. Dr Oseland references historical studies in psychophysics to describe how to design environmental conditions (acoustics, lighting, temperature, indoor air quality) that enhance performance by supporting basic physiological needs. More contemporary research in environmental psychology investigates how cognition affects our interpretation and response to physical stimuli depending on personality, context, attitude and other personal factors. This in turn informs individual requirements for the environmental conditions as well as group needs. Studies in evolutionary psychology and biophilia are also referenced. The latter part of the book turns to workplace solutions and focuses on how to plan, design and manage offices to accommodate our innate human needs now and in the future. The importance of designing for inclusivity is also recognised, including accommodating cultural, gender and generational differences along with designing spaces for neurodiversity. Dr Oseland’s proposed workplace solution the Landscaped Office is a revived and revised version of Bürolandschaft with a contemporary twist. The impact of workplace trends, such as agile working and hot-desking, is also explored and found to complement the workplace solution, resulting in the Agile Landscaped Office. This book is key reading for professionals, and post-graduate students, in business, interior design, architecture, surveying, facilities management, building services engineering, HR and organisational or environmental psychology.

Download or read book Savages and Beasts written by Nigel Rothfels and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-07-14 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To modern sensibilities, nineteenth-century zoos often seem to be unnatural places where animals led miserable lives in cramped, wrought-iron cages. Today zoo animals, in at least the better zoos, wander in open spaces that resemble natural habitats and are enclosed, not by bars, but by moats, cliffs, and other landscape features. In Savages and Beasts, Nigel Rothfels traces the origins of the modern zoo to the efforts of the German animal entrepreneur Carl Hagenbeck. By the late nineteenth century, Hagenbeck had emerged as the world's undisputed leader in the capture and transport of exotic animals. His business included procuring and exhibiting indigenous peoples in highly profitable spectacles throughout Europe and training exotic animals—humanely, Hagenbeck advertised—for circuses around the world. When in 1907 the Hagenbeck Animal Park opened in a village near Hamburg, Germany, Hagenbeck brought together all his business interests in a revolutionary zoological park. He moved wild animals out of their cages and into "natural landscapes" alongside "primitive" peoples from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the islands of the Pacific. Hagenbeck had invented a new way of imagining captivity: the animals and people on exhibit appeared to be living in the wilds of their native lands. By looking at Hagenbeck's multiple enterprises, Savages and Beasts demonstrates how seemingly enlightened ideas about the role of zoos and the nature of animal captivity developed within the essentially tawdry business of placing exotic creatures on public display. Rothfels provides both fascinating reading and much-needed historical perspective on the nature of our relationship with the animal kingdom.
