Book excerpt: The poems were conceived and written in a first draft, between 2017 and 2019, while commuting on the local buses between Heiligenstadt and Klosterneuburg-Weidling, between the bus stop at the domicile and the endstation of bus 400 at Heiligenstadt. From there the poet would travel by expressway, either with the ÖBB train or the subway U4 to the city of Vienna. He'll enjoy quality time meeting friends, supporters, and Muses. The themes of the poems are the observance of city life; inner reflections about relationships; thoughts about humanity in the doldrums; dehumanization; the human catastrophe; hospitalization of the poet; recent friends and Muses; the loss of individuality; and self-reflections on a world of gender turmoil. The original drafts have been edited in an ongoing process and completed by 2023.

Book excerpt: I wrote these poems while traveling on a tour bus. Yes, a tour bus! It was my first real tour bus ride. I sat right up front, right behind the driver because he told me that was the best place to sit since I suffer from motion sickness. We were on the way to Atlanta! Each day's activities were well-planned out and we got to each destination on time. Everything went according to the agenda for the whole trip - I'm sure that's unheard of. It was quite the adventure and our driver was super special - he really made the trip fun. So join me in Hot-lanta!

Book excerpt: Autobiographical poetry from one of Kentucky’s rising Affrilachian literary stars. Bernard Clay’s autobiographical poetry debut, English Lit, juxtaposes the roots of Black male identity against an urban and rural Kentucky landscape. Hailed as one of the most authentic voices of his generation, Clay artfully renders coming-of-age in the predominately Black West End of Louisville, Kentucky. Balancing the spirited grit of a farmer and the careful lyricism of a poet, English Lit is a triumph of new Affrilachian—African American and Appalachian—literature.

Book Everyone Rides the Bus in a City of Losers

Download or read book Everyone Rides the Bus in a City of Losers written by Jason Freure and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the words of Margaret Thatcher, “A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure.” Everyone Rides the Bus in a City of Losers is about wandering Montreal’s streets, with an eye on the storefronts and alley cats, and one foot already in the nearest dive bar. From a series of poems about every station on the Metro to music venues long shut down, it’s sometimes fantastical, nostalgic, funny, and even joyful — a sucker for landmarks, always looking out for glimpses of the Farine Five Roses sign, the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the cross on Mont-Royal, and anything still neon. Montreal’s rich literary tradition is celebrated: A.M. Klein, Leonard Cohen, Heather O’Neill, Gail Scott, Richard Suicide, and Gaston Miron all make their way into the poems. The book also ventures from the hip hot spots of The Plateau and Mile End to Verdun, Côte-des-Neiges, NDG, St-Henri, Petite-Patrie, and Ahuntsic. A restless spirit propels the text further and further into new neighborhoods, but always returns downtown. This is a book about those who’ve seen the city turn its back on them and leave them out in the cold. Who get lost in boroughs east and west. Who get lonely, garble their French, and never manage to find a seat at their favorite coffee shop. In Jason Freure’s psychogeography, everyone’s a flaneur. And everyone rides the bus.
