Book The Burning Chaffees

Download or read book The Burning Chaffees written by Balram Singh Mehta and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971, India waged a momentous war against Pakistan. But before all-out war, an even more significant tank battle was fought on 21 November 1971 by the C Squadron 45 Cavalry, which demolished the Pakistani General A.A.K. Niazi's plans of victory and set the stage for the utter routing of the Pakistani Army. Equipped with the amphibious PT-76 tanks, the Indian Army's C Squadron 45 Cavalry was unleashed to swim across the River Kabodak, near the Boyra salient (now in Bangladesh), to counter the threat from East Pakistan. On 21 November 1971, the two warring armies clashed in a tank versus tank battle at Garibpur. In one fell swoop, Pakistan's 3 (Independent) Armoured Squadron, consisting of fourteen American M-24 Chaffee tanks, was completely destroyed and two of its infantry battalions were badly mauled. This was followed by the shooting down of three Sabre F-86 jets for the loss of two PT-76 tanks on the Indian side. And thus, the biggest attack planned by General A.A.K. Niazi to teach the Indians and the Mukti Bahini a lesson had gone up in smoke. This battle was a victory and a decisive one at that. It was a trumpet call to the rest of the world of India's intent to stand up for human liberty and dignity in this war of liberation. On 3 December 1971, Pakistan declared war. The rest is history. The Burning Chaffees is a thrilling account of the pivotal battle of 21 November by Brigadier B.S. Mehta.

Book The Imjin and Kapyong Battles Korea 1951

Download or read book The Imjin and Kapyong Battles Korea 1951 written by Paul MacKenzie and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacrifice of the "Glorious Glosters" in defense of the Imjin River line and the hilltop fights of Australian and Canadian battalions in the Kapyong Valley have achieved greater renown in those nations than any other military action since World War II. This book is the first to compare in depth what happened and why. Using official and unofficial source material ranging from personal interviews to war diaries, this study seeks to disentangle the mythology surrounding both battles and explain why events unfolded as they did. Based on thorough familiarity with all available sources, many not previously utilized, it sheds new light on fighting "the forgotten war."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After China's November 1950 intervention in the war and the subsequent battle of the Chosin Reservoir, UN forces faced a new onslaught in the spring of 1951 with over 350,000 veteran troops attacking along the Imjin River. The US 3rd Infantry Division took the brunt of the attack along with the attached British 29th Infantry Brigade which included the Gloucestershire Regiment (the “Glosters”). The heroic defence of the American and British forces would pass into legend, most especially the doomed effort of the Glosters, as they sought to buy time for the rest of the UN forces to regroup and organise an effective defence of Seoul, the South Korean capital city. Featuring full colour commissioned artwork, maps and first-hand accounts, this is the compelling story of one of the most epic clashes of the Korean War.

Book excerpt: A major new investigation into the Bhutto family, examining their influence in Pakistan from the colonial era to the present day "Fluently written, impeccably researched and never short of extraordinary insights, this is a landmark publication."--Farzana Shaikh, Literary Review The Bhutto family has long been one of the most ambitious and powerful in Pakistan. But politics has cost the Bhuttos dear. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, widely regarded as the most talented politician in the country's history, was removed from power in 1977 and executed two years later, at the age of 51. Of his four children, three met unnatural deaths: Shahnawaz was poisoned in 1985 at the age of 27; Murtaza was shot by the police outside his home in 1996, aged 42; and Benazir Bhutto, who led the Pakistan Peoples Party and became Prime Minister twice, was killed by a suicide bomber in Rawalpindi in 2007, aged 54. Drawing on original research and unpublished documents gathered over twenty years, Owen Bennett-Jones explores the turbulent existence of this extraordinary family, including their volatile relationship with British colonialists, the Pakistani armed forces, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a personal story based on my experiences in 1971, the founding year of Tactics Combat Development & Training Squadron (TCDTS). The Squadron was upgraded to an Establishment, Tactics & Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) in Dec 1972. The primary source of information is my log book which for every pilot is a document of prime importance. It is filled every month from the Flight Authorisation book of the sqn and signed by the Flt Cdr and the Sqn Cdr. Ask any pilot and referring to his log book he will be able to tell you where he was and what he did on any date of his flying career. Essentially this is a first-hand account of the story of TCDTS air operations in the Indo-Pak war 1971, supported by as many sources as I could find. By no means have I attempted to tell the history of the Indo-Pak War 1971 as there is any amount of literature on the subject. Ours was a small but important part of the overall effort of the Indian Air Force which I hope makes an intriguing and exciting narrative. Teshter Master Bangalore

Brave Men of War- from the heights of Kargil to the plains of Punjab-sets out to record acts of valour and tell the stories of the brave men, some of whom unflinchingly paid theprice of victory with the ultimate sacrifice of their lives during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Pakistan's defeat in the war, marked the coming of age of the Indian army. There are stories of countless young men who lost their lives, fighting until they 'd drawn their last breath but all too often their stories were either forgotten or reduced to footnotes in the larger volumes of history. This book recounts the heroic and fearless acts of bravery demonstrated by our men in Olive. The list includes Lt Gen Harbaksh Singh, the military leader who planned, directed and commanded the operations and actions, Lt Col Desmond Hayde, the hero of Dograi, Lt Col AB Tarapore and Lt Col MMS Bakshi and many others. Without glamorising war, this is an attempt to preserve the stories of heroism and sacrifice of some fearless men, so that they may become role models for the youth of India and never be forgotten.

Ashok Tara, unarmed, entered the lion's den, and negotiated with the hostile soldiers for the release of Bangladesh's Father of the Nation and his family that included a young Sheikh Hasina. The Lone Wolf is Ashok Tara's story, charting the course of his celebrated yet quiet life as a member of the armed forces. Considered to be one of the most beautiful apsaras, she was married off to the mighty Ravana, the legendary king of Lanka. Despite her husband's faults, Mandodari loved him and advised him to follow the path of righteousness. Ravana's defeat in a thirteen-day war turned him into a villain. But what if he were the real hero on his side of the war? What if his downfall was a result of scheming to push him out of power? This is Mandodari's story.
