Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews:Our family came upon this book by more than co-incidence, just at a time when we needed it most. We had been reading a novel in the 'Stories from South Africa' series, by the same author, entitled,'With no remorse' and were intrigued to see a note at the end of it, to the effect that the 'ongoing, non-fiction story' of two of the characters could be found in 'The Bronze Killer'. - What an eye-opener! Not only was the book well-written and utterly absorbing; it provided us with information which has led to the diagnosis of several members of our family. We are so grateful! Also recommended: Enjoyed all the author's other titles, especially 'With no remorse' and 'Storm Water.' ***A very helpful book for medics or those looking for answers. The Bronze Killer was a book that came into my life at a very desperate time - I had just been diagnosed with Haemochromatosis and found that the doctors that I knew were not apparently very knowledgeable about it. I felt very uneasy and very alone, despite thankfully having a very supportive wife. Not only was Marie Warder, with her honesty and knowledge, able to bring a better understanding to me through the book, about this sleeping ogre of an illness, it also allowed others around me to realise that I really was not full of imaginings or laziness - that it was all because of the Genetic Iron Overload doing its damage. ***I believe The Bronze Killer would be a worthwhile read for any student doctor coming into the field and certainly for those people with the disorder and their family and friends. It most certainly wouldn't do anyone-else any harm either, for the book is not just a story of discovery; it is also a very touching and honest account of a great woman's battle against so many ordeals, not of course just in the name of seeking a cause but of doing it all for the love of man whom she had known for a long time. For someone like myself with the illness, I will not forget the speed with which I read the book and I'm sure it will be appreciated by many for having it to turn to - either as an educational aid or certainly as it was for me - an emotional sustenance that got me through some very vague and bewildering days. I just needed to hear more than "You've got a disorder called Haemochromatosis." Having The Bronze Killer to turn to was a great comfort, despite its sadness. Marie Warder deserves many accolades and I hope that others will recognize that soon. ***Every member of my family has a copy! Having just re-read this book for the umpteenth time, I happened to click onto the preceding review. Because there is such a very high incidence of this disorder in our family, we try to keep abreast of current research etc. and were delighted when the World Health Organization called a meeting on "The Prevention and Control of Hemochromatosis" as we really believed that this would result in greater awareness. Apparently not even that - nor the fact that the Centres for Disease Control have declared it to be the most common genetic disease - has caught the attention of the media. Perhaps this is why the previous reader does not know about HH. A doctor at the Mayo Clinic says it has reached epidemic proportions and those of us who have been helped by reading "The Bronze Killer" when even our own family doctors were really in the dark, sympathize with the writer - while commending her for her ceaseless efforts to attain timely diagnosis for those at risk. "I can only say "thank you" to this lady for baring her heart and telling her story so that others might not have to suffer in a similar manner. Baruch Levy from Cape Town, SA

She quickly busies herself with managing a charming public library that requires all her attention with its severe lack of funds and overabundance of eccentric patrons. The last thing she needs is a new, available neighbor whose charm lures her into trouble. Determined to clear the name of the woman his great-uncle loved, Richard implores Amy to help him investigate the case. Amy is skeptical until their research raises questions about the culpability of the town’s leading families... including her own. Book excerpt: “A twisty, cold-case mystery custom made for fans of Sara Shepard, PLL and Veronica Mars! The edge-of-your-seat plot, sinister backstory and smart, brave and irreverent main character made this whodunit unputdownable.”—Justine Magazine In To Catch a Killer, a contemporary mystery by debut author Sheryl Scarborough, a teenage girl uses forensic science to solve the cold-case murder of her mother. Erin Blake has one of those names. A name that is inextricably linked to a grisly crime. As a toddler, Erin survived for three days alongside the corpse of her murdered mother, and the case—which remains unsolved—fascinated a nation. Her father's identity unknown, Erin was taken in by her mother's best friend and has become a relatively normal teen in spite of the looming questions about her past. Fourteen years later, Erin is once again at the center of a brutal homicide when she finds the body of her biology teacher. When questioned by the police, Erin tells almost the whole truth, but never voices her suspicions that her mother's killer has struck again in order to protect the casework she's secretly doing on her own. Inspired by her uncle, an FBI agent, Erin has ramped up her forensic hobby into a full-blown cold-case investigation. This new murder makes her certain she's close to the truth, but when all the evidence starts to point the authorities straight to Erin, she turns to her longtime crush (and fellow suspect) Journey Michaels to help her crack the case before it's too late. After dispatching his victims, police allege he left their bloodstained bodies and crept back to the neatly kept room in his mother's apartment. Sleep my little dead... For six terror-filled years, the Zodiac killer ruled the night, claiming nine victims in his homicidal rage. One of the biggest manhunts in New York City's history was unleashed...and still the body count rose. When would the terror end? Police claim his lethal fury finally exploded one summer afternoon. After shooting his own sister, he held her boyfriend hostage and kept scores of heavily armed police pinned down in a ferocious firefight that finally ended with his surrender. But it was only when an alert detective recognized a symbol drawn on Seda's confession as similar to the personal signature used by the Zodiac Killer in his letters, that investigators concluded that the madman they had arrested was in fact the notorious Zodiac Killer. Author Kieran Crowley, an award-winning New York Post reporter who covered the case from the first grisly shooting and cracked the psychopath's secret code, reveals the exclusive inside story and finally solves the biggest remaining mystery of the case.

Book The Devil s Harvest

Download or read book The Devil s Harvest written by Jessica Garrison and published by Legacy Lit. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This suspenseful true story of a drug cartel hitman who got away with murder after murder in California's Central Valley over three decades reveals how the criminal justice system fails our most vulnerable immigrant communities. On the surface, fifty-eight-year-old Jose Martinez didn't seem evil or even that remarkable—just a regular neighbor, good with cars and devoted to his family. But in between taking his children to Disneyland and visiting his mom, Martinez was also one of the most skilled professional killers police had ever seen. He tracked one victim to one of the wealthiest corners of America, a horse ranch in Santa Barbara, and shot him dead in the morning sunlight, setting off a decades-long manhunt. He shot another man, a farmworker, right in front of his young wife as they drove to work in the fields. The widow would wait decades for justice. Those were murders for hire. Others he killed for vengeance. How did Martinez manage to evade law enforcement for so long with little more than a slap on the wrist? Because he understood a dark truth about the criminal justice system: if you kill the "right people"—people who are poor, who aren't white, and who don't have anyone to speak up for them—you can get away with it. Melding the pacing and suspense of a true crime thriller with the rigor of top-notch investigative journalism, The Devil's Harvest follows award-winning reporter Jessica Garrison's relentless search for the truth as she traces the life of this assassin, the cops who were always a few steps behind him, and the families of his many victims. Drawing upon decades of case files, interrogation transcripts, on-the-ground reporting, and Martinez's chilling handwritten journals, The Devil's Harvest uses a gripping and often shocking narrative to dig into one of the most important moral questions haunting our politically divided nation today: Why do some deaths—and some lives—matter more than others? "Meticulously researched and tightly woven, The Devil's Harvest is an important story because it tells us that if [this] can happen in one place, then it can happen in any place. And that's damn scary." —Michael Connelly, New York Times bestselling author of The Closers, The Lincoln Lawyer, and The Night Fire
