Book excerpt: The second installment of a no-holds-barred look at the history of the famed Texas Rangers from western author Mike Cox Following up on his magnificent history of the 19th century Texas Rangers, Mike Cox now takes us from 1900 through the present. From horseback to helicopters, from the frontier cattle days through the crime-ridden boom-or-bust oil field era, from Prohibition to World War II espionage to the violent ethnic turbulence of the ‘50s and ‘60s--which sometimes led to demands that the Texas Rangers be disbanded. Cox takes readers through the modern history of the famed Texas lawmen. Cox's position as a spokesperson for the Texas department of Public Safety allowed him to comb the archives and conduct extensive personal interviews to give us this remarkable account of how a tough group of horse-borne lawmen--too prone to hand out roadside justice, critics complained--to one of the world's premier investigative agencies, respected and admired worldwide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the destruction of the Maine and other events leading to the Spanish–American War, Theodore Roosevelt resigned as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in order to go to the front. Under Colonel Leonard Wood, Roosevelt raised and trained the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, who were quickly nicknamed the “Rough Riders.” The regiment received a surplus of volunteers, with a mix of recruits ranging from Southwestern cowboys to Ivy League scholars. Logistical difficulties challenged the regiment almost immediately in their transit to Cuba. Before sailing from Tampa, they were forced to leave behind four of the twelve total companies and almost all of their horses. As an officer, Roosevelt kept his horse, which he rode to lead the charge in the Battle of San Juan Hill. Roosevelt recalled the battle as “the great day of my life” and “my crowded hour.” After winning the war, the onset of yellow fever, malaria, and other incapacitating diseases made it imperative to return the soldiers home quickly. Along with nine generals, Roosevelt drafted and signed a “round robin” letter, which was also published nationwide to turn public attention toward returning the troops. Back home, Roosevelt initially published the work serially in Scribner’s Magazine in 1899, and its popularity contributed to his rise as a national figure. Luisa, wife of Charro's partner, Carlos Resendez, encourages Sarah to do both. After graduation, Sarah becomes a contributing editor to the San Antonio Express newspaper. Her controversial articles, strongly flavored with women's rights issues, make Sarah a popular figure among women's rights activists and suffragists. In an effort to demonstrate to the people of Texas that women are capable of being more than mothers and homemakers, Sarah participates as a working vaquero on a perilous cattle drive. Childbirth burdens Sarah's already packed schedule of writing, speaking, and promoting the suffrage movement. But while she is away, a tragedy at home rekindles her dilemma. Guilt-ridden from her self-perceived negligence as a wife and mother, should Sarah continue her leadership role as a women's rights activist, or should she return to Dos Encinos to solely be Mrs. Charro Cisneros?
