Book The British Columbia Wine Industry

Book excerpt: "In 1989, the Canada United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was implemented and dramatically changed the course of the wine industry's development in British Columbia (BC). The FTA forced the industry to make the transition from being highly protected, and inefficient, to a competitive market contender. Although considered initially to be a victim of the FTA, by 2010, the BC wine industry contributed $295.8 million to the BC economy, or 0.15% of provincial GDP, and provided 5,100 direct and indirect jobs; and is now considered by many to be a remarkable BC success story. This investigation traces the evolution of the industry from 2000 to 2010 by examining the structural changes that occurred in the industry's value chain during that period. The study employs and industry cluster model to identify the relationships between the firms located in the Okanagan region. Results from the study show the growth in value added from all sectors of the value chain and identify several sources of the industry s competitive advantage: extensive vertical integration, and a strong relationship to the tourism cluster. Conclusions are provided regarding the future challenges and opportunities facing the industry."--Abstract.

Book The Wine Industry in British Columbia

Download or read book The Wine Industry in British Columbia written by Andy Hira and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report is based on a Genome BC, Genome Canada, SFU, and UBC funded study from 2009-2011 of the competitiveness of the BC wine industry as compared to other wine industries around the world (other cases and comparative analysis will be released as a book or special edition sometime in 2011-12). Though the BC industry has had remarkable success, we focus on vulnerabilities (possible weaknesses) for growth and stability in the industry (as listed in the Table of Contents). We use cluster theory, which suggests that firms competing in the same industry also have reason to cooperate. When we compare BC with the other cases studied, namely, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Chile, we find that there is far less cooperation, institutional support and leadership, and a heavy dependence on the local market, particularly local tourism. There are weaknesses as well in access to knowledge and learning through limited opportunities for interactions, agricultural extension, and training. This may be natural given the early stage of BC's wine industry, however, it also suggests adjustment is important for longterm growth and evolution"--Executive summary.

Book Essential Wines and Wineries of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Essential Wines and Wineries of the Pacific Northwest written by Cole Danehower and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superbly balanced pinot noirs; crisp rieslings; rich, heady syrahs: these are only a fraction of the expertly crafted wines being produced in the Pacific Northwest's diverse and distinctive wine countries. Second only to California in production, the Pacific Northwest is the largest wine region in North America, home to more than 1,000 wineries. What was once a young wine-growing area with a reputation for eccentricity is today recognized as a dynamic region producing world-class wines, with a focus on ecologically sound practices. This definitive volume profiles the wines, the people who make them, and the wine countries of Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Idaho. The journey begins with the region's climates and geology, which create a fascinating tapestry of wine-growing areas. Next, the book focuses on the unique qualities of each wine region, with profiles of more than 160 representative wineries to visit. Included are legacy wineries that helped to build the region’s reputation, prestige wineries with a national presence, under-the-radar artisan wineries that embody the pioneering spirit of the Northwest, and promising new wineries. Each profile lists the winery's signature, premium, value, and estate wines. Beautifully illustrated with photographs and helpful maps, this in-depth guide is a milestone in the North American literature on wine. It will enable wine lovers everywhere to plan their touring, select their wines, and explore and discover the riches of the Northwest's wine country.
