Excerpt: ... alacrity upon this dangerous venture which should Chawm culminate in taking' the last dominant ridge upon the 1 British front from those who had held them so lone. third Battle of The French attacked upon the extreme left of the Ypres. line, and had an extremely difficult task, which they 'J"'y 31. accomplished with a dash and spirit which won the unstinted admiration of their British comrades. In front of them was the canal, but they had succeeded in throwing across some troops in the days before the battle. It was fitting that they should advance the line in this sector, for they were starting from the very spot to which their comrades had been pushed in the poison-gas battle of April 22, 1915, more than two years before. The ground in front of them was very marshy, and as a background to the German position loomed the great forest of Houthulst, which was known to be a strong gun position and place of arms. It was subjected, however, to such a shattering bombardment that it was nearly silent when the attack advanced, and the French poilus, pushing rapidly on from point to point, seized the village of Steenstraate, and finally the larger village of Bixschoote, establishing their line well to the north of that point. It was a most valorous advance, and if no detail can be given of it save this passing mention, it is because it belongs to that weighty and wonderful volume which shall record the glorious military deeds of France, a volume which can only be written with proper appreciation and knowledge by a French pen. The British line of battle was formed by five corps, the Fourteenth (Cavan) to the north, the Eighteenth (Maxse) upon its right, the Nineteenth (Watts) upon the right of that, the Second (Jacob) came next, and then...

Download or read book The British Campaign in France and Flanders Volume 4 written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If ever a writer needed an introduction Arthur Conan Doyle would not be considered that man. After all, Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the foremost literary detective of any age. Add to this canon his stories of science fiction and horror, his historical novels, his political campaigning, his efforts in establishing a Court Of Appeal, his poetical works and there is little room for anything else. Except he was also a dedicated and voluminous historian writing much about the wars in Southern Africa and the First World War. His analysis and description of events is to be admired and his style is welcoming even though he relays events of great carnage and tragedy. Here we publish volume 4 of his history of the Great War.

Book A History Of The British Army Vol IV Part One 1789 1801

Download or read book A History Of The British Army Vol IV Part One 1789 1801 written by Hon. Sir John William Fortescue and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life’s work “The History of the British Army”, issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. In scope and breadth it is such that no modern scholar has attempted to cover such a large and diverse subject in its entirety; but Sir John did so and with aplomb, leading to a readable and comprehensive study. This fourth volume covers the period from 1789 to 1801; as the tocsins of the French Revolution rang around the European continent their effects would lead to almost unceasing warfare for the next twenty years. During the Revolutionary Wars, the British Army would mature during the campaigns of the First Coalition against France always giving a good account of themselves, but their small number meant that the course of the campaign would not lead to victory. The effectiveness of the British Army in sea-borne assaults on French possessions across the world, would lead to much success but also bitter grumbling of Britain’s coalition partners. TIMES.—"We are witnessing the birth of a military classic which is, and will be for some generations to come, without a peer in the subject to which it relates. The debt which the British Army owes to the writer of this moving chronicle of its great achievements, its grandeurs, and its miseries can only be repaid if every member of the Army endeavours to assimilate for himself, and for the profit of his country, Mr. Fortescue’s admirable and most instructive pages." A MUST READ for any military enthusiast.
