Book Swimming and Flying in Nature

Download or read book Swimming and Flying in Nature written by Theodore Wu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium on Swimming and Flying in Nature which was held at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California from July 8-12, 1974 was conceived with the objective of providing an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of funda mental biological and fluid mechanical aspects of these forms of natura110comotion. It was the earnest hope of all concerned in the organization of the Symposium that the exchange of knowledge and interaction of ideas from the disciplines involved would stimu late new research in this developing field. If the liveliness of the discussion generated among the 250 or so participants is any measure, then this objective was fulfilled to a significant degree. These two companion volumes contain the manuscripts of the papers presented during the Symposium. It is hoped that this permanent record will serve to perpetuate the enthusiasm and active thought generated during those days in Pasadena. The first volume contains the proceedings of the first two days of the confer ence (Sessions I to IV) which concentrated on the locomotion of micro-organisms. The second volume (Sessions V to VIII) deals with the propulsion of larger fish, insects and birds. Professor Sir James Lighthill's Special Invited Lecture which opened the Symposium is contained in the second volume, rather than the first, since it deals with natural flight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost without our noticing, dragonflies dart through our world, flying, seeing, hunting, mating. Their lives are as mysterious as their gossamer wings are beautiful. In this book Pieter van Dokkum reveals many of the dragonfly’s secrets, capturing the stages of this striking insect’s life cycle in unprecedented close-up photographs. He documents scenes of dragonfly activity seldom witnessed and rarely photographed. The book begins on a moonlit summer night, when an alien-looking larva crawls out of the water and transforms into a fully formed dragonfly. In the following chapters we witness dew-covered dragonflies sparkling in the morning sun, then a pair of mating dragonflies moving through the air in a twelve-legged, eight-winged dance. In the final chapter, one generation dies as the next prepares to leave the water and begin its own winged journey. Each stage is documented through van Dokkum’s inquisitive lens and accompanied by information on various species of dragonflies and damselflies, their metamorphosis, and their ecological importance as insect predators.

Download or read book The Crash of the Dragonfly written by Carolyn Searls and published by EABooks Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crash of the Dragonfly takes you on a journey into the tropical jungles of Southern Palawan where you witness that the God of Daniel, King David and Peter performs the same miracles, shows the same protection, and leads us today as He did then. In that remote, mountainous region, the Searls family faced malaria, witch doctors, poverty, satanic oppression, political and religious antagonism and Muslim rebels. Daily survival required looking to the Lord Jesus. Fears had to be met with faith. Through hardships, God provided everything they needed to homeschool their children and do the work of the ministry. He encouraged them with miracles, protection, and the salvation of many. Embodied in this true story are Rick's flights as a jungle pilot to mountainous villages where you'll be introduced to Palawano tribes. See their way of life and get to know their beliefs that kept them in bondage to fears and superstitions. How can the gospel make a difference and set them free from the oppression fears bring? The Searls hit a crossroad. What looked like the end of a man's ministry turned out to be the beginning of something greater. Carolyn shares how the Lord leads us on the course He wants us to take if we are willing to turn the corner with Him. Would you like to build strong relationships with people who think and live differently than you do? Principles in this book can be applied to all relationships. You'll have an opportunity to learn about a different culture and how one adjusts. Carolyn shows the role a disciplined mind plays in successful living and lets you see how a new church was started. At the end of each chapter is a personal application and prayer of dedication. Adventures in the book reveal God's mighty power over adversity with great victory. A plane crash that was looked at with dread, disappointment, and even failure became the catalyst God used to lead to unimaginable blessings and salvation. Whatever trials you face in life, never give up. It's always too soon to quit.
