Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside Memorial Hall the impatient classes stirred nervously, counting off the minutes, sitting gingerly on the seat-edges for fear of wrinkling the carefully pressed suits or shifting solicitously the sharpened trousers in peril of a bagging at the knees. Heavens! how interminable the hour was, sitting there in a planked shirt and a fashion-high collar—and what a recitation! Would Easter ever begin, that long-coveted vacation when the growing boy, according to theory, goes home to rest from the fatiguing draining of his brain, but in reality returns exhausted by dinners, dances, and theaters, with perhaps a little touch of the measles to exchange with his neighbors. Even the masters droned through the perfunctory exercises, flunking the boys by twos and threes, by groups, by long rows, but without malice or emotion...FROM THE BOOKS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So much of my time is given to reading boys' books that, when I read books for grown-ups, now and again I find myself saying, -What a bully story for boys to read - Latterly, I have been putting down the titles of such stories. When the list began to lengthen, it occurred to me, why not make a book for boys containing stories like that: stories written for grown-ups but also of interest to boys in their early teens.

Book The Radioactive Boy Scout

Download or read book The Radioactive Boy Scout written by Ken Silverstein and published by Random House. This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in suburban Detroit, David Hahn was fascinated by science, and his basement experiments—building homemade fireworks, brewing moonshine, and concocting his own self-tanning lotion—were more ambitious than those of other boys. While working on his Atomic Energy badge for the Boy Scouts, David’s obsessive attention turned to nuclear energy. Throwing caution to the wind, he plunged into a new project: building a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard garden shed. In The Radioactive Boy Scout, veteran journalist Ken Silverstein recreates in brilliant detail the months of David’s improbable nuclear quest. Posing as a physics professor, David solicited information on reactor design from the U.S. government and from industry experts. (Ironically, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was his number one source of information.) Scavenging antiques stores and junkyards for old-fashioned smoke detectors and gas lanterns—both of which contain small amounts of radioactive material—and following blueprints he found in an outdated physics textbook, David cobbled together a crude device that threw off toxic levels of radiation. His unsanctioned and wholly unsupervised project finally sparked an environmental catastrophe that put his town’s forty thousand residents at risk and caused the EPA to shut down his lab and bury it at a radioactive dumpsite in Utah. An outrageous account of ambition and, ultimately, hubris that sits comfortably on the shelf next to such offbeat science books as Driving Mr. Albert and stories of grand capers like Catch Me If You Can, The Radioactive Boy Scout is a real-life adventure with the narrative energy of a first-rate thriller.

Download or read book The Boy Scouts Book of Stories Classic Reprint written by Franklin K. Mathiews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy Scouts Book of Stories Something over a year ago the Electric Railway Journal be gan the publication of its monthly Mechanical and Engineering Numbers. The purpose of these has been to furnish articles of a character particularly helpful to the men who are responsible for the upkeep of the physical equipment of an electric railway property. Overhead line construction, tracks, buildings, power plants, substations, shops and rolling stock and its equipment have all been kept in mind. Arrangements were made with several specialists in different parts of the electric railway field for series of articles covering the fundamentals of track, power transmission, car equipment, car bodies and power plant operation; these were in addition to numerous articles on details of practice in the several lines men tioned. While all of the series are not yet complete, they have proved to date so valuable and comprehensive that the publishers of the paper have decided to reprint a number of the articles in the several series, particularly for the benefit of those who have not had the opportunity to read them month by month. Space limitations have prevented the reprinting of the entire groups of articles but a careful selection has been made of those which seem to have greatest immediate practical value. Readers of this volume are referred to the original series in each of the fields if further details are desired. The authors of the articles reprinted are all qualified by practical experience and theoretical study to furnish the kind of material desired by the workers in the practical depart ments of the electric railways. For want of a better word the term practical is used to designate those who have to do with physical equipment. Mr. Cram is in daily contact with the way and structure problems of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit System and had a wide experience before joining the stafl of the B. R. T. Book The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories

Download or read book The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories written by Franklin K. Mathiews and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The campfire for ages has been the place of council and friendship and story-telling. The mystic glow of the fire quickens the mind, warms the heart, awakens memories of happy, glowing tales that fairly leap to the lips. The Boy Scouts of America has incorporated the "campfire" in its program for council and friendship and story-telling. In one volume, the Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories makes available to scoutmasters and other leaders a goodly number of stories worthy of their attention, and when well told likely to arrest and hold the interest of boys in their early teens, when "stirs the blood—to bubble in the veins." At this time, when the boy is growing so rapidly in brain and body, he can have no better teacher than some mighty woodsman. Now should be presented to him stirring stories of the adventurous lives of men who live in and love the out-of-doors. Says Professor George Walter Fiske: "Let him emulate savage woodcraft; the woodsman's keen, practiced vision; his steadiness of nerve; his contempt for pain, hardship and the weather; his power of endurance, his observation and heightened senses; his delight in out-of-door sports and joys and unfettered happiness with untroubled sleep under the stars; his calmness, self-control, emotional steadiness; his utter faithfulness in friendships; his honesty, his personal bravery." The Editor likes to think that quite a few of the stories found in the Boy Scouts Book of Campfire[vi] Stories present companions for the mind of this hardy sort, and hopes, whether boys read or are told these stories, they will prove to be such as exalt and inspire while they thrill and entertain.
