Book The Boston Public Latin School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Boston Public Latin School Classic Reprint written by Henry Fitch Jenks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Public Latin School A preparatory school should naturally be established before a col lege: so it is not strange that this School antedates Harvard College by two or three years, justifying the remark of a distinguished gradu ate oi both, that the Latin School dandled Harvard College on her knees. From the earliest times the pupils of the one have passed on to the other in a stream whose flow, occasionally narrowed or widened, has never been intermitted; and the names of not a few of the most eminent graduates of the College are borne on the rolls of the School. The Latin School has always been a democratic institution. Its privileges have been confined to no class. The minister's and the tallow-chandler's sons have sat side by side on its forms, and engaged in friendly rivalry in schoolroom and on play-ground, and equally enjoyed its privileges. Its honors have been given for merit. And all have had the same chance to gain them. In establishing this School, our fathers provided at the very beginning a school for teaching the higher branches, instead of one for mere elementary instruction. An interesting article in a volume of the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society shows that the establishment of this school is largely due to John Cotton, who brought to this country a knowledge of the High School which was founded by Philip and Mary in I 554 in Boston, in Lincolnshire, England, in which Latin and Greek were taught. Cotton came to this country in 1633, and was one of the ministers of the First Church. Two years later, the Free School was established; and his will provides that under certain contingencies half his estate should go to Harvard College, and half to the Free School of Boston, which confirms the impression that he was prominent in founding it. A house for the master to live in free of rent, a feature of the English school reproduced here, strengthens this impression. Book Catalogue of the Boston Public Latin School Established in 1635

This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Boston Public Latin School, Established in 1635: With an Historical Sketch ON the twenty-third day of April, 1885, the hundred fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the Boston Public Latin School was celebrated in the new School House on Warren Avenue. At the end of its first quarter-millenium, the Committee to which had been entrusted the preparation of this Catalogue has great pleasure in offering it to the pupils of the School, and to all who are interested in the annals of the town and city of Boston as a fit memorial of its oldest School. It may seem a long period since this work was begun by the Committee. But as w: have said, once and again, in our annual reports, it was not worth doing at all unless we did it as well as we could. What we have desired was to make the best Catalogue possi ble of the teachers and scholars of the School since the beginning. New material has offered itself once and again, sometimes from unexpected sources; yet the elucidation of the broken record has always required, as will readily be seen, careful research, and one obdurate name, for which there was any hope of more light, has often set back the compiler many weeks in the work of printing. Frequently when a page has been supposed to be complete, new information has been received, which has required all that had been done to be cast away and the whole work to be begun afresh, thus greatly adding to the labor and increasing the cost of the book; and if any investigator, searching the Records of the Association, thinks the expenses of the years during which this Catalogue has been in press, have been unduly exorbitant, he can justly ascribe them to the cost of correcting old or doing new work which was made necessary by the acquisition of important information for the Catalogue, which arrived too late to be used in the original preparation of the pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 57: Boston Latin School; March 1938 In the first place, the Latin School student goes through a certain routine every day. Even so, his life is not monotonous and humdrum. For instance, every week day, he arises at seven o'clock in the morning (or seven-thirty, or eight), washes, eats his breakfast, packs his books, and arrives in school at eight-thirty (or nine, or nine-thirty). Let us pass Over the next painful five and a half hours, as they are particularly systematized. At any rate, the student is out of class at two-thirty, packs his books, engages in the usual small-talk, and leaves at two-forty. Arriving home, he enjoys some form of recreation for an hour. He does an hour's home work before eating, returns to homework, finishes up, and goes to bed as soon as possible - perhaps at ten - thirty or eleven o'clock. Let us now take up the system from nine to two-thirty. Did we say that he finishes his homework at night? That was wrong. In the majority of cases, his Latin is done before school (if he can get in early enough to join in the huddle), and some other home lesson in the study and home-room periods; that is, if he can write fast enough. Most numerous of all are the formulas for fixing up what he has not the time to do, and almost equal in number are the systems for applying these formulas. In fact, so numerous are they that we are unable in this short article to cite them specifically. But there is a system for evading homework, for evading misdemeanor marks received for evading homework, for evading teachers in order to evade the marks, and so forth. Like the brook, we could go on forever in this tale of evasion. These systems are so natural, albeit they do reduce life to a routine, that a boy can and does follow them without thinking about them. He does not say to him self, What shall I do next? He goes ahead and does it. Thus, his mind is more free to devote his thinking to the important matters of his subjects. Too, the routine is well broken up by variations one encounters in study. One day he must learn one thing, next day he must learn another; one day he finds a new thought, the day after, another new thought. He is forever encountering novelties (in the way of human actions, perhaps!) in the hours that he attends classes, and he enjoys himself in the recess - and lunch - periods. Download or read book Boston Latin School Register Vol 56 of 5 written by Boston Latin School and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston Latin School Register, Vol. 56 of 5: Christmas Number; December, 1936 Especially noticeable during the past few years have been the attempts on the part of certain public-spirited and zealous citizens, to repress undermining and tremendously detrimental activities of a few crackpot agitators. These good citizens express fears that such radicals will only too easily succeed in implanting their doc trines in the rash, immature minds of the youth of the country. On the surface, such an unselfish, fostering attitude would seem to be excellent and, granting that such menaces exist and that the younger generation is inexperienced and even foolhardy, also quite proper. And yet that is not the complete picture; certain basic elements and principles have been neglected. In the first place, it is not in accordance with the American system of democracy to attempt to repress things. The government itself is held in equilibrium by a series of balancing, counteracting forces. No matter what party or person or principle holds sway, despite the general acclaim for it, there is, and always must be, an opposing faction which stabilizes and points out the defects of the other's program. It is the basis of American life; each man brings his opinions and plans - his grist, to the public mill where it is thrashed out, assailed, and studied by his fellow-men from every point of view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Year Latin Texts and Methods in America; Their History and Status: Thesis One of the first headsmasters of the boston.latin School was Ezekiel Cheever who held that position for nearly forty years. He influenced more perhaps than any other one man, the manner of pre senting elementary Latin as practiced down at least to the time of the Revolution. He found the accidence in Lily's Grammar not alear and accurate enough for his use, so he compiled and pmblished one of his own, which remained in use in some schools as late as 1800. This little book was in its ninth edition in 1766, fifty-eight years after the authors death ahd its title was as follows.
