Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The great farm hall was ablaze with the fire-light, and noisy with laughter and talk and many-sounding work. None could be idle but the very young and the very old: little Rol, who was hugging a puppy, and old Trella, whose palsied hand fumbled over her knitting. The early evening had closed in, and the farm-servants, come from their outdoor work, had assembled in the ample hall, which gave space for a score or more of workers. Several of the men were engaged in carving, and to these were yielded the best place and light; others made or repaired fishing-tackle and harness, and a great seine net occupied three pairs of hands. Of the women most were sorting and mixing eider feather and chopping straw to add to it. Looms were there, though not in present use, but three wheels whirred emulously, and the finest and swiftest thread of the three ran between the fingers of the house-mistress. Near her were some children, busy too, plaiting wicks for candles and lamps. Each group of workers had a lamp in its centre, and those farthest from the fire had live heat from two braziers filled with glowing wood embers, replenished now and again from the generous hearth. But the flicker of the great fire was manifest to remotest corners, and prevailed beyond the limits of the weaker lights.

Book The Book of Were Wolves

Download or read book The Book of Were Wolves written by Sabine Baring-Gould and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reference book for the 19th-century werewolf seeker, Sabine Baring-Gould’s ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ explores the trying tales and magic myths of werewolves from ancient folklore, Greek and Norse myths. Unpacking the truth behind legendary beliefs, cases of Lycanthropy, and tips and tricks for curing yourself of a werewolf conviction, Baring-Gould deep dives into the dark psychological reasons as to how and why people may believe themselves to be part wolf. Asking the age-old question of how anyone can feel capable of maiming and killing another being, ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ invites readers to ponder how and why some members of society may harbour secret desires to inflict cruelty on other animals - big and small. Weaving an intoxicating narrative, ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’ is ideal for fans of Netflix’s ‘Werewolves Within’. Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a British novelist and Anglican priest. A prolific writer, his bibliography spans more than one thousand publications, including the best-known hymns ‘Onward, Christian Soldiers’, ‘Sing Lullaby’ and ‘Now the Day is Over’. Baring-Gould's interest in folklore led to the publication of one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy, ‘The Book of Were-Wolves’.

Book Real Wolfmen

Download or read book Real Wolfmen written by Linda S. Godfrey and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s hiding in the woods? Here is the definitive account of today’s nationwide sightings of upright, canine creatures – which resemble traditional werewolves – and a thorough exploration of the nature and possible origins of the mysterious beast. “She has the ability to send chills up and down your spine.” —Brad Steiger, author of Real Ghosts, Restless Spirits, and Haunted Places “If you thought the likes of The Wolfman, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and Underworld had no basis in fact, it's time to think again!” —Nick Redfern, author of There's Something in the Woods “Real Wolfmen is a riveting work of amazing scope and depth. You’ll be hooked from the first page.”--Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of The Encyclopedia of Vampires and Werewolves The U.S. has been invaded – if many dozens of eyewitnesses are to be believed – by upright, canine creatures that look like traditional werewolves and act as if they own our woods, fields, and highways. Sightings from coast to coast dating back to the 1930s compel us to ask exactly what these beasts are, and what they want. Researcher, author and newspaper reporter Linda S. Godfrey has been tracking the manwolf since the early 1990. In Real Wolfmen she presents the only large-scale cataloguing and investigation of reports of modern sightings of anomalous, upright canids. First-person accounts from Godfrey’s witnesses – who have encountered these creatures everywhere from outside their car windows to face-to-face on a late night stroll – describe the same human-sized canines: They are able to walk upright and hold food in their paws, interact fearlessly with humans, and suddenly and mysteriously disappear. Godfrey explores the most compelling cases from the modern history of such sightings, along with the latest reports, and undertakes a thorough exploration of the nature and possible origins of the creature.

Book Werewolves Wolves and the Gothic

Download or read book Werewolves Wolves and the Gothic written by and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolves lope across Gothic imagination. Signs of a pure animality opposed to humanity, in the figure of the werewolf they become liminal creatures that move between the human and the animal. Werewolves function as a site for exploring complex anxieties of difference – of gender, class, race, space, nation or sexuality – but the imaginative and ideological uses of wolves also reflect back on the lives of material animals, long persecuted in their declining habitats across the world. Werewolves therefore raise unsettling questions about the intersection of the real and the imaginary, the instability of human identities and the worldliness and political weight of the Gothic. This is the first volume concerned with the appearance of werewolves and wolves in literary and cultural texts from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Drawing on representations of werewolves and wolves in literature, film, television and visual culture, the essays investigate the key texts of the lycanthropic canon alongside lesser-known works from the 1890s to the present. The result is an innovative study that is both theoretically aware and historically nuanced, featuring an international list of established and emerging scholars based in Britain, Europe, North America and Australia.

As the lone female werewolf in existence, only her secret midnight prowls and her occasional inhuman cravings set her apart. Just one year ago, life was very different. Adopted by the Pack when bitten, Elena had spent years struggling with her resentment at having her life stolen away. Torn between two worlds, and overwhelmed by the new passions coursing through her body, her only option for control was to deny her awakening needs and escape. But now the Pack has called Elena home to help them fight an alliance of renegade werewolves who are bent on exposing and annihilating the Pack. And although Elena is obliged to rejoin her "family," she vows not to be swept up in Pack life again, no matter how natural it might feel. She has made her choice. Trouble is, she's increasingly uncertain if it's the right one. An erotically charged thriller, Bitten will awaken the voracious appetite of every reader, as the age-old battle between man and beast, between human and inhuman forces, comes to a head in one small town and within one woman's body.

Book excerpt: "Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a prolific writer, priest, and an eclectic scholar. He considered collecting folk songs and lore to be among his greatest achievements. In addition to providing a history of the subject in this book he also recounts in detail the story of the Maréchal de Retz, who was executed in 1440 for the serial murders of children but was also suspected of being a werewolf.
