Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Goat: Containing Full Particulars of the Various Breeds of Goats and Their Profitable Management Rather more than ten years have elapsed since I contributed to The Bazaar, Exchange and Mart the series of articles on "Goats and their Management" which were subsequently published in book form in the First Edition of this work. Goats as milk-producers were not generally recognised at that period, and it was in consequence of the numerous queries that appeared in the columns of the journal above mentioned, asking for information on the treatment of these animals, that I was induced to give my experience, in the hope that others besides the actual querists might derive the advantages from keeping them that I had myself acquired. I had no idea, however, at the time that I was preparing a work which would eventually appear under so important a designation as "The Book of the Goat," and it was only when it blossomed forth into its higher stage of existence as a bound volume that I realised the insignificance of the material I had supplied in comparison with the comprehensive nature of the title. It has ever since been my hope that the subject I had taken up and made my special hobby might one day become sufficiently popular to warrant the publication of an enlarged edition, which, by being treated in a more exhaustive manner, would be better worthy of the name bestowed upon it. That time has, I consider, arrived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Goat in its original edition was the first work devoted to the subject printed in the English language. First published in London in the 1880s, it is now a very scarce and desirable book in any early edition. We have now re-published the 1917 edition incorporating the original text and vintage photos and illustrations. This edition had been considerably revised and enlarged giving many more pages of comprehensive information on this popular animal. Three hundred and sixty six pages contain twenty nine detailed chapters: Origin and Early History of the Goat; Varieties of Goats; British Milch Goats; Continental Milch Goats; Oriental and African Goats; The Angora or "Mohair" Goat; The Cashmere or "Shawl" Goat; Cross Bred Goats; Selecting a Milch Goat; Housing; Pasturing; Stall Feeding; Breeding; Rearing Kids; Milking; Goats' Milk; Its Virtues and Utilities; Goats' Butter and Cheese; The Flesh of the Goat; Other Products; The Goat as a Foster Mother; He-Goats and Goat-Carriages; Goat Farming; Shows and Showing; The British Goat Society; Goats and the Malta Fever; Diseases, Parasites, etc; Dishorning; Preventing Growth of Horns; Breeding Hornless Goats. etc. Since this book was first published the advance in goat keeping has been most marked. The improvement in the culture of the goat as a source of milk, fleece and meat has been manifest not in England alone, but globally. This historical record will be of major interest to goat keepers worldwide, with much of its content remaining relevant even to this day.

Book excerpt: From “Three Billy Goats Gruff” to The Men Who Stare at Goats, this inimitable ruminant has long played a role in our literature and popular culture. And yet, our relationship with the “poor man’s cow” is oddly ambivalent. In the beautifully illustrated Goat, Joy Hinson explores the reason behind this unease while presenting readers with the animal’s fascinating natural history and its effect on myth, medicine, and culture. Hinson traces the history of goats from their evolution millions of years ago through their domestication and role in the modern world. She delves into our interaction with endangered wild goat species and the familiar farmyard goat, and she reveals the harm done by humans in indiscriminately importing tamed goats, leading to huge feral populations in Australia and on the Galapagos Islands. Hinson also considers the place of goat products in culinary and medical traditions, from the pouring of goat urine into the ear as a cure for neck pain to the belief that a goat’s bezoar stone can be used as an antidote for poison. From Goat Festivals in the United States to the Christmas Goat in Sweden, Goat takes readers on an exciting ride through this frequently neglected animal’s history, life, and role in today’s world.
