Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Boston: Fifty Years' Recollections of the New England Metropolis The intent of this book is to tell the story of Fifty Years Of Boston, the story of the progress and development of the city in the last past half century and of the institutions and men identified with it, through a series of reminiscences rather than in the formal manner of the direct historical narrative. History and biography indeed are woven into the relation, but with lighter thread, though none the less accurate, than in the conventional web. The reminiscent method was adopted because as a resident of Boston for the most part of this eventful half century, as an active journalist from the early eighteen sixties, and a managing or a chief editor of Boston daily newspapers for considerable periods, the editor has seen Boston grow from the interesting but little historic city of fifty years back into the splendid metropolis of light and leading of today; and through his newspaper connections has come in touch directly or indirectly with leaders of the epoch reviewed, merchants, financiers, professional men, politicians, officials of city and state, the master minds of the community that "make the wheels go round." During this time he has seen the rise of many individuals and firms who have left their impress on trade, and commerce and industry; has seen great changes wrought in the physical and spiritual city; the development of great institutions, educational, learned, devoted to the arts and sciences, that have made Boston a treasure house for American scholars and students; and the initiation of public utilities of subsequent country-wide adoption. Although the story of the evolution of all the greater American cities is wonderful and worth the telling, yet certain developments in Boston within the period covered by this work are of particular moment, especially since it was the parent city of the telephone and of the electric subway; and since it was also the first American seaboard city to take advance steps in regard to the systematic development as a port. While this story might well have been told by any trained newspaper man, the editor feels himself particularly fortunate as the narrator in that it has been his personal privilege to come in direct contact with various leading citizens who have had the commanding influence in certain formative periods of the city's comparatively recent growth. Book excerpt: At approximately seven o’clock in the evening on May 7, 1950, Gordon Malherbe Hillman filled an empty bottle with water, capped it, and walked into his mother’s room in the pair’s fifth-floor suite at Boston’s luxurious Copley Plaza Hotel. He then edged up behind the semi-invalid woman and bludgeoned her to death. Hotel staff had planned to evict the two the following day after several weeks of unpaid rent. Mounting debts had finally broken the fifty-year-old Hillman, a now-struggling author of mixed success, but it had not always been that way, as Thomas Aiello shows in his study of the life and work of this forgotten midcentury figure. As a youth, Hillman attended the prestigious Noble and Greenough School near Boston. Pursuing a career as a writer, he published several dozen pieces of short fiction and a critically acclaimed novel, Fortune’s Cup (1941). Hollywood studios purchased the rights to two of his stories and made them into films, The Great Man Votes (1939) and Here I Am a Stranger (1940). But Hillman remained, for the most part, a middling magazine writer like the majority of fiction authors working during the Depression. Although most did not resort to acts of manic violence, Hillman’s tenuous position in literary circles, along with his gradual descent into financial ruin, proved a far more common tale than the stories of literary success often pored over by critics and historians of this period. In The Trouble in Room 519: Money, Matricide, and Marginal Fiction in the Early Twentieth Century, Aiello weaves a compelling true crime narrative into his exploration of the economics of magazine fiction and the strains placed on authors by the publishing industry prior to World War II. Examining Hillman’s writing as exemplary of Depression-era popular fiction, Aiello includes eight stories written by Hillman and originally published in prominent midcentury American magazines, including Collier’s, Liberty, and McCall’s, to provide additional context and insight into this trying time and tragic life.

Living on Maryland's eastern shore, schoolteacher Rebecca Primus sent "home weeklies" to her parents in Hartford and also corresponded with friend Addie Brown, a domestic worker back home. Addie wrote voluminously to Rebecca, lamenting their separation and describing her struggle to achieve a semblance of security and stability. Around the same time, Rebecca's brother, Nelson, began writing home about his new life in Boston, as he set out to make a name and a career for himself as an artist. The letters describe their daily lives and touch on race, class, gender, religion, and politics, offering rare entry into individual black lives at that time. Through extensive archival research, Barbara J. Beeching also shows how the story of the Primus family intersects with changes over time in Hartford's black community and the country. Newspapers and census tracts, as well as probate, land, court, and vital records help her trace an arc of local black fortunes between 1830 and 1880. Seeking full equality, blacks sought refinement and respectability through home ownership, literacy, and social gains. One of the many paradoxes Beeching uncovers is that just as the Civil War was tearing the nation apart, a recognizable black middle class was emerging in Hartford. It is a story of individuals, family, and community, of expectation and disappointment, loss and endurance, change and continuity.
