Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Goal Programming is intended to allow academics and practitioners to be able to build effective goal programming models, to detail the current state of the art, and to lay the foundation for its future development and continued application to new and varied fields. Suitable as both a text and reference, its nine chapters first provide a brief history, fundamental definitions, and underlying philosophies, and then detail the goal programming variants and define them algebraically. Chapter 3 details the step-by-step formulation of the basic goal programming model, and Chapter 4 explores more advanced modeling issues and highlights some recently proposed extensions. Chapter 5 then details the solution methodologies of goal programming, concentrating on computerized solution by the Excel Solver and LINGO packages for each of the three main variants, and includes a discussion of the viability of the use of specialized goal programming packages. Chapter 6 discusses the linkages between Pareto Efficiency and goal programming. Chapters 3 to 6 are supported by a set of ten exercises, and an Excel spreadsheet giving the basic solution of each example is available at an accompanying website. Chapter 7 details the current state of the art in terms of the integration of goal programming with other techniques, and the text concludes with two case studies which were chosen to demonstrate the application of goal programming in practice and to illustrate the principles developed in Chapters 1 to 7. Chapter 8 details an application in healthcare, and Chapter 9 describes applications in portfolio selection.

Download or read book Making Makers written by Michael P. M. Finch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Makers presents a comprehensive history of a seminal work of scholarship which has exerted a persistent attraction for scholars of war and strategy: Makers of Modern Strategy. It reveals the processes by which scholars conceived and devised the book, considering both successful and failed attempts to make and remake the work across the twentieth century, and illuminating its impact and legacy. It explains how and why these influential volumes took their particular forms, unearths the broader intellectual processes that shaped them, and reflects on the academic parameters of the study of war in the twentieth century. In presenting a complete genesis of the Makers project in the context of intellectual trends and historical contingency, this book reflects on a more complex and nuanced appraisal of the development of scholarship on war. In so doing it also offers contributions to the intellectual biographies of key figures in the history of war in the twentieth century, such as Edward Mead Earle, Peter Paret, Gordon Craig, and Theodore Ropp. Making Makers contributes to an intellectual history of military history and contextualises the place of history and historians in strategic and security studies. It is not only a history of the book, but a history of the networks of scholars involved in its creation, their careers, and lines of patronage, crossing international boundaries, from Europe to the USA, to Asia and Australia. It is an investigation of ideas, individuals, and groups, of work completed and scholarship produced, as well as contingency and opportunities missed.

This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the period from the publication of Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers' Director (1754) to the Great Exhibition (1851), this book analyses the relationships between producer retailers and consumers of furniture and interior design, and explores what effect dialogues surrounding these transactions had on the standardisation of furniture production during this period. This study examines the role of pattern books and their readers; the construction of taste and style through negotiation; and daily interactions through showrooms and other services, to reveal the complexities of English material culture in a period of industrialisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex and James are cousins who both attend the prestigious Knox Hall Boys School. Alex finds himself drawn toward another student named Ralph, but is unsure of what his interest in the older boy might mean. When Ralph is expelled for admitting his homosexuality, Alex then finds himself hauled before the school board for questioning. Although no intimacy between the two boys has taken place, some board members are not convinced. Alex adamantly feels his place at the school is no longer viable, and begs his parents to take him and James out. Alexs childhood sweetheart, Frances, is ordered by her parents to stay away from Alex, because they feel he is a bad influence. Alex is deeply hurt by this; he becomes rebellious, withdrawn and abusive. Two years later, Alex and Ralph meet again, unexpectedly. An affair begins, but Ralph is under pressure from his family to marry. Since Alex is still sexually attracted to girls, hes unable to make a commitment to Ralph, who goes ahead with his marriage. This moving story about young men who want different things out of life is sensitively expressed in all its nuances in Alternative Desires.

This book explores how the transformation developed and assesses the role played by public attitudes.
