Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PDF can be downloaded for free from http://martenscentre.eu/publications/rethinking-bomb-europe-and-nuclear-weapons-twenty-first-century The question of what Europe's nuclear strategy should be is rarely discussed. While Europe continues to play a crucial role on issues relating to non-proliferation, particularly in negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme, nuclear strategy is generally considered to be within remit of Russia, the United States and NATO. The paper identifies possible scenarios where the deployment of nuclear weapons may be justified. It also examines the use of tactical nuclear weapons, traditional means of arms control and the implications of a nuclear Iran. The author establishes a compelling case for the immediate development of a coherent European nuclear strategy. This strategy should take into account the role of nuclear weapons in maintaining peace and security in modern Europe. While conceding that during periods of financial and political crisis dialogue may not be considered a priority, the author maintains that it is essential in order to limit the risk of proliferation or the use of nuclear weapons.

Book Euromissiles

  • Author : Susan Colbourn
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2022-11-15
  • ISBN : 1501766031
  • Pages : 409 pages

Download or read book Euromissiles written by Susan Colbourn and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Euromissiles, Susan Colbourn tells the story of the height of nuclear crisis and the remarkable waning of the fear that gripped the globe. In the Cold War conflict that pitted nuclear superpowers against one another, Europe was the principal battleground. Washington and Moscow had troops on the ground and missiles in the fields of their respective allies, the NATO nations and the states of the Warsaw Pact. Euromissiles—intermediate-range nuclear weapons to be used exclusively in the regional theater of war—highlighted how the peoples of Europe were dangerously placed between hammer and anvil. That made European leaders uncomfortable and pushed fearful masses into the streets demanding peace in their time. At the center of the story is NATO. Colbourn highlights the weakness of the alliance seen by many as the most effective bulwark against Soviet aggression. Divided among themselves and uncertain about the depth of US support, the member states were riven by the missile issue. This strategic crisis was, as much as any summit meeting between US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet general secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, the hinge on which the Cold War turned. Euromissiles is a history of diplomacy and alliances, social movements and strategy, nuclear weapons and nagging fears, and politics. To tell that history, Colbourn takes a long view of the strategic crisis—from the emerging dilemmas of allied defense in the early 1950s through the aftermath of the INF Treaty thirty-five years later. The result is a dramatic and sweeping tale that changes the way we think about the Cold War and its culmination.

Book European Security and the Nuclear Threat Since 1945

Download or read book European Security and the Nuclear Threat Since 1945 written by James R. Schlesinger and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period since World War II has witnessed a cataclysmic shift in the structure of power reflecting in large measure the creation of powerful strategic nuclear capabilities and the latent or explicit employment of the nuclear threat. It has also witnessed the partial disintegration of the traditional nation-state system, and an alternation in the role assignable to this older form of social organization. Europe--whose initial attainment of international hegemony reflected the mobilization of energies through the agency of the nation-state--has suffered a power eclipse closely associated with the declining power-potential of the nation-state system. Until 1939 the center of world power, Europe became increasingly during World War II the principal target for external forces, a far less enviable position, but one which it continued to occupy through the main period of the Cold War. Since the Berlin crisis, there are signs of its ceasing to be the center of attention--and of its becoming a kind of political backwater.
