Book The Blessings of War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Blessings of War Classic Reprint written by Patrick Hore Warriner Ross and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blessings of War Disciplined intelligence is mightier than disciplined docility. At the beginning of the war, the world was amazed at the perfect discipline of the German people no less than of the German army. Events have proved, however, that individualistic nations such as the British under stress will freely accept discipline with consequences still more amazing than the disciplined docility of the German people. I believe that in America the results will be even more striking than in Great Britain. It is true that we have been somewhat riotous in our individualism; but at all events we do possess initiative and we are highly intelligent, although we may not be docile or humble. Book Philosophies at War

Download or read book Philosophies at War written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by Colchis Books. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.

Who praise your God although He slay, Who are uplifted from the deep. We know you in a murky day By the sad glorious air you keep. Your tears are only for God's eyes, Your cries are for the heart of God. What strange foretaste of Paradise Tells secrets as you walk abroad! Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Line of Battle: Soldiers Stories of the War In dealing with these records I have tried to be a faithful interpreter or reproducer of a tale that has been told to me. I have invited a man to tell his story as it came into his mind, and to look upon me simply as a means of putting it into concrete and coherent form, and as a medium between himself and the reader. The greatest difficulty that had to be overcome was a narrator's reluctance to speak Of his own achieve ments, though he never failed to wax enthusiastic when telling Of the doings Of his comrades. Nothing has left a deeper impression on my mind than the generous praise which a gunner, say, has bestowed upon the infantry, and the blessings that the infantry have invoked upon the gunners. Never in any of Great Britain's wars has there been such an exhibition of universal esprit de corps as we have witnessed in this stupendous conflict between civilisation and freedom and cultured barbarism and tyranny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Providence in War: A Thanksgiving Discourse Our literature has kept pace with our science. The press is the handmaid to a purer morality - a higher civilization - a more exalted piety. Popular attention, directed to proper subjects, and popular sentiment based upon instinctive right, are both led onward by those noble minds who are the chief adornment of our era. Nay, they are beyond the era. In addition to what is, they see what should be, and are making preparation for its attain ment. In all such efforts they scatter blessings, and dig; nify their calling. True authorship is the lever of Archi medes, and universal mind the fulcrum whereon it must rest to uplift the world. Other minds there are - sharp, keen, glowing as Damascus steel - minds that seize upon the passing thought, strike it, and malleate it into form and substance - minds who, though not cleric, esteem the world their parish; and in their daily addresses, silent, invaluable, well-studied sermons on the topics touched, they teach the people the value of an honorable self reliance, the importance of independent thinking, and the manliness of manly action.
