Book The Blauvelt Family Genealogy

Download or read book The Blauvelt Family Genealogy written by Dorothy Ackerman Moos and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blauvelt surname seems to have been derived from the coat-of-arms of Pieter Blaeuwvelt of Enkhuysen in Holland. The "Association of Blauvelt Descendants" feels confident that Gerrit Hendrickson (1620-1683/1684) was a direct descendant of Pieter, and rightfully entitled to the surname. Gerrit himself was baptized as Hendricksen and never used the surname of Blauvelt. He was a son of Hendrick Gerryts and wife Grietje, and he immigrated in 1637 from Holland to work in Rensselaerwick, a patroonship along the Hudson River. By 1646, Gerrit had settled in New Amsterdam, where he married twice and was a farmer. All of his children used Blauvelt as a surname. Des- cendants and relatives lived in New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, California and elsewhere. Some descendants were Loyalists during the Revolutionary War, and shortly afterwards immigrated to Nova Scotia and elsewhere in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the Blauvelt family in America claim their ancestor was a Dutch colonist named Gerrit Hendricksen? How did he become so well-placed in New Amsterdam society that he could marry the daughter of the foremost ship builder, and receive a substantial land grant making him the next door neighbor of Governor Peter Stuyvesant? What was his relationship to Captain Willem Albertsen Blauvelt, the only man carrying the name in the Dutch colony of New Netherland? Ralph Blauvelt tackles these questions and more in "A Blauvelt Descendant, Researching Family History." He describes his childhood experience of growing up in Rockland County, NY, and his gradual understanding of his Dutch-American heritage. He did not understand the deference given to him as a school boy when some people learned that his name was Blauvelt. As a college student, he was embarrassed when he could not answer a question about the Blauvelt descendant who married John Kennedy. Ignorance gave way to increasing knowledge about his family history. He became a member of the Association of Blauvelt Descendants, joined its board of directors, and eventually assumed the position of genealogist. "A Blauvelt Descendant" touches upon the contributions of Blauvelt descendant families to American life. In a collection of articles, essays, and historical addresses, the author presents Major Fredericus Blauvelt at the DeWint House, where George Washington made his headquarters during the American Revolution; the 19th century spiritualists, Kate and Maggie Fox; and the 20th century American artist, Edward Hopper. He descended from six of the seven Blauvelt siblings who settled in 17th century Tappan, NY. The author's most recent research takes us back to 16th century Netherlands and the origin of the Blauvelt name in his essay, "The First Blauvelt, Pieter of Enkhuizen."

Book Clientelism and Nationality in an Early Soviet Fiefdom

Download or read book Clientelism and Nationality in an Early Soviet Fiefdom written by Timothy K. Blauvelt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive original research, this book tells the astonishing story of early Soviet Abkhazia and of its leader, the charismatic Bolshevik revolutionary Nestor Lakoba. A tiny republic on the Black Sea coast of the USSR, Abkhazia became a vacation retreat for Party leaders and a major producer of tobacco. Nestor Lakoba became the unquestioned boss of Abkhazia, constructing a powerful local ethnic "machine" that became an influential component of Soviet patronage politics, provoking along the way accusations of nepotism, corruption, blood feuds, embezzlement, racketeering, and extrajudicial murder on a scale that shocked even hardened Communist Party investigators. Lakoba and his group faced a series of trials, investigatory commissions, and tribunals over allegations of malfeasance, yet they were repeatedly able to convince their powerful patrons of their irreplaceability, until at last they were destroyed through a public show trial during the peak of the Stalinist Terror. Through the prism of tiny Abkhazia, this book provides invaluable insights into the nature of the early Soviet system and the governance of Soviet national republics.
