Come journey with one of God's blacksmiths as he sheds light on a variety of kingdom based calls and appointments for the people of God. See revealed within these pages some of the typical strategies of the enemy used against these God-given callings, and learn techniques to overcome them as you deepen your relationship with Christ. Many are called, but few chosen. Be one of the chosen and step into the fullness of your calling to forge and empower the people of God as a "Spiritual Blacksmith."

Download or read book Hotly in Pursuit of the Real written by Ron Hansen and published by Slant Books. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hotly in Pursuit of the Real, the beloved bestselling novelist Ron Hansen opens the doors of his writing studio to share with us his passions for history, scandal, theology, Jesuits, the American West, and golf (which he plays even in bad weather). If Hansen's novels explore people very different from himself--from a stigmatic nun to a Victorian poet to Billy the Kid, and even Hitler's niece--the meditations in this book do the opposite, allowing us to glimpse the wellsprings of his imagination, the places and traditions and books that drive him to create made-up worlds. In that sense, the reflections in these pages truly serve as "notes toward a memoir." As each section unfolds, we gain a clearer sense of Hansen's aesthetic, the parallels he sees between writing and the sacraments, between literature's capacity to make history present to us and the Church's rich array of traditions, including the Jesuit charism that has inspired great writers, such as Gerard Manley Hopkins (and himself). Equally adept at telling a hilarious anecdote and guiding us through a complex, ambiguous episode in history, Hansen's language remains fresh and invigorating. Hotly in Pursuit of the Real takes you inside one writer's imagination, only to send you back out into the wide world with new eyes.
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Wicca Witchcraft written by Raven Grimassi and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2000 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grimassi has written extensively about Wicca, and Llewellyn specializes in books sympathetic to occult ways, so the combination is pretty predictable. He describes not only the usual magic practices, but also the religious and spiritual aspects of what believers say is inherited ancient European wisdom and scoffers say is made-up, new-age nonsense. Download or read book The Transjordanian Palimpsest written by Jeremy M. Hutton and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes several passages in the Former Prophets (2 Sam 19:12-44; 2 Kgs 2:1-18; Judg 8:4-28) from a literary perspective, and argues that the text presents Transjordan as liminal in Israel’s history, a place from which Israel’s leaders return with inaugurated or renewed authority. It then traces the redactional development of Samuel-Kings that led to this literary symbolism, and proposes a hypothesis of continual updating and combination of texts, beginning early in Israel’s monarchy and continuing until the final formation of the Deuteronomistic History. Several source documents may be isolated, including three narratives of Saul’s rise, two distinct histories of David’s rise, and a court history that was subsequently revised with pro-Solomonic additions. These texts had been combined already in a Prophetic Record during the 9th c. B.C.E. (with A. F. Campbell), which was received as an integrated unit by the Deuteronomistic Historian. The symbolic geography of the Jordan River and Transjordan, which even extends into the New Testament, was therefore not the product of a deliberate theological formulation, but rather the accidental by-product of the contingency of textual redaction that had as its main goal the historical presentation of Israel’s life in the land.
Download or read book Dickinson written by Emily Dickinson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seamus Heaney, Denis Donoghue, William Pritchard, Marilyn Butler, Harold Bloom, and many others have praised Helen Vendler as one of the most attentive readers of poetry. Here, Vendler turns her illuminating skills as a critic to 150 selected poems of Emily Dickinson. As she did in The Art of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, she serves as an incomparable guide, considering both stylistic and imaginative features of the poems. In selecting these poems for commentary Vendler chooses to exhibit many aspects of Dickinson’s work as a poet, “from her first-person poems to the poems of grand abstraction, from her ecstatic verses to her unparalleled depictions of emotional numbness, from her comic anecdotes to her painful poems of aftermath.” Included here are many expected favorites as well as more complex and less often anthologized poems. Taken together, Vendler’s selection reveals Emily Dickinson’s development as a poet, her astonishing range, and her revelation of what Wordsworth called “the history and science of feeling.” In accompanying commentaries Vendler offers a deeper acquaintance with Dickinson the writer, “the inventive conceiver and linguistic shaper of her perennial themes.” All of Dickinson’s preoccupations—death, religion, love, the natural world, the nature of thought—are explored here in detail, but Vendler always takes care to emphasize the poet’s startling imagination and the ingenuity of her linguistic invention. Whether exploring less familiar poems or favorites we thought we knew, Vendler reveals Dickinson as “a master” of a revolutionary verse-language of immediacy and power. Dickinson: Selected Poems and Commentaries will be an indispensable reference work for students of Dickinson and readers of lyric poetry.

Download or read book Give and Take written by David Read and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why you think the way you do about people, jobs, relationships, and just about anything you have ever encountered? Everything you have ever experienced, every thought you have thought is the direct result of what you have given to it, or what you have taken from it. This is the capacity of our souls to give thought and to take thought concerning all that we see, hear, and feel in this life. God has designed us in his image, and in this creation, he has put within us the ability to do so. In this book of Give and Take, we will follow the path from salvation to warfare to peace and giving of thanks as we see that God gives us much and that much is available from him for us to take for our advantage. As you discover who he is as a sovereign God, you will begin to measure your life based on what you give to it and what you take from it. Understanding that the principles set forth in the give-and-take that we apply in respect, forgiveness, taking captive thoughts, and more as seen through the examples of David, Nehemiah, Daniel, the Apostle John as well as others is through and by his love. All we give to this life and all that we take from this life is defined by this principle of give-and-take. Every relationship, every event, every moment is rendered through how we give to God and how we take from God.
Download or read book An African Tree of Life written by Thomas G. Christensen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An African Tree of Life demonstrates how mission involves not only a "bringing-to" a people, but a "discovering-of" those deep symbols in human culture and God's creation that, in the light of the gospel, draw humanity to Christ. This book, in a scholarly yet intriguing way, explores the stories and rituals of the Gbaya people of the Cameroon and the Central African Republic. These deep symbols are typically centered not in the esoteric or exotic but in the familiar and everyday. Christensen focuses on the especial importance of the peace-bringing tree of life--the sore tree--central to the lives and worship of the Gbaya. "Gbaya Christians," says Christensen, "offer to North American Christians fresh and hope-filled images, rich metaphors, new and yet familiar to us." Thus, An African Tree of Life is an important book not only for theologians, missiologists, and Africanists but for all those concerned with issues of contextualization and seeking life-giving symbols in the quest to communicate the gospel message.
